Hi,

Please help me remove the infections from my PC. I have tried to make our job easier. I have made a comparison, and instead of copying and pasting the whole log file, I am including only what used to be present when I thoroughly cleaned up my PC last time around using this forum and is absent now, & vice versa. This naturally means that I have omitted files that were common between the two logs.

Thanks a lot!

Hi, and Welcome to WhatTheTech :)

My name is jpshortstuff. I would be glad to take a look at your log and help you with solving any malware problems. HijackThis logs can take a while to research, so please be patient and I'd be grateful if you would note the following:
  • I will be working on your Malware issues, this may or may not, solve other issues you have with your machine.
  • The fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for the issues on this machine.
  • Please continue to review my answers until I tell you your machine appears to be clear. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.
  • It's often worth reading through these instructions and printing them for ease of reference.
  • If you don't know or understand something, please don't hesitate to say or ask!! It's better to be sure and safe than sorry.
  • Please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.
I'm afraid I will need the whole HijackThis log, so please run a fresh scan and post the full contents of that log.

I need to see another log from HijackThis.
  • Run Hijackthis.
  • Click on Open the Misc Tools section.
  • Next click on Open uninstall manager.
  • Press the Save list button.
  • Save the file to your desktop, with the default name of uninstall_list
  • Copy & Paste the entire contents of that file in your in your next post.
Can you tell me what symptoms/problems you are currently experiencing?

Thanks.
I am not experiencing any critical issues. I would like to increase my PC speed, as it has slowed down significantly.

I really appreciate your help.

Hi

Does your Trend Micro Package include an Anti-Virus program/module? If so, I highly recommend you uninstall AVG. It is not recommendable to run more than one on-access Anti-Virus program at a tim, as they can cause conflicts and also slow down your system. If Trend Micro is just your Firewall, then that is fine, leave it all as it is.

I notice you have the following P2P/File sharing programs:
eMule
Kazaa Media Desktop 2.1.1
SoulSeek

P2P is a great way to infect your computer - you can never tell where the files are coming from, and who has had the chance to interfer. Many infected systems are caused by users with P2P programs. On top of this, you may notice that I have highlighted Kazaa. On top of the risks of P2P, Kazaa is known to often be directly bundled with Adware. I highly recommend you uninstall these programs, and any others you may have. At the very least, do yourself a favor and get rid of Kazaa, and please do not use any of these programs until we have finished checking your PC here. I must warn you that if you return to the forums with similar problems that may be malware related, and you still have P2P programs, many helpers will be reluctant to provide help and may well refuse.

You can uninstall these program by clicking Start >> Control Panel >> Add/Remove Programs, and then clicking Remove by each entry you wish to get rid of.

I also recommend you remove these outdated Java installations as you already have the latest and that is sufficient:
Java™ 6 Update 2
Java™ 6 Update 5
Java™ SE Runtime Environment 6 Update 1

Close all browsers and windows except for HijackThis and click Fix Checked.

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
Download - ATF Cleaner»
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.

(If you use FireFox or the Opera browser
To keep saved passwords, click No at the prompt.)

It's normal after running ATF cleaner that the PC will be slower to boot the first time or two.

Reboot your computer after performing all these steps.

Lets have one last check for Malware before we look at the slowness (if it remains).

Please go to Kaspersky website and perform an online antivirus scan.
  • Read through the requirements and privacy statement and click on Accept button.
  • It will start downloading and installing the scanner and virus definitions. You will be prompted to install an application from Kaspersky. Click Run.
  • When the downloads have finished, click on Settings.
  • Make sure these boxes are checked (ticked). If they are not, please tick them and click on the Save button:
    • Spyware, Adware, Dialers, and other potentially dangerous programs
      Archives
      Mail databases
  • Click on My Computer under Scan.
  • Once the scan is complete, it will display the results. Click on View Scan Report.
  • You will see a list of infected items there. Click on Save Report As….
  • Save this report to a convenient place. Change the Files of type to Text file (.txt) before clicking on the Save button.
  • Please post this log in your next reply, along with a fresh HijackThis log.
Thanks.
Hello again jpshortstuff,

I did already do everything you mentioned. I just never got a chance to post. I uninstalled KaZaA a long time ago, and I barely use eMule and SoulSeek now. What you see are "leftovers". There are many applications that I no longer have, and they still appear on the Add/Remove list. Can you tell me how to get rid of those?

I am posting the logs you requested here.

Thanks again!

Hi

What happens when you click "Remove" by each of these entries in Add/Remove Programs? Also, have you for uninstall programs in the start/programs menu and foder in Program Files?
e.g (for Kazaa):
Start >> All Programs >> Kazaa (or similar) >> Uninstall Kazaa (or similar), and
C:\Program Files\Kazaa (or similar)\uninstall.exe (or similar, like uninst.exe)

Because these programs have entries have uninstall entries in your Add/Remove programs list, it suggests that their uninstallers have never been run. If you are sure you have uninstalled (not deleted) the programs, then we can try deleting the prorgams manually (tyhis may take more work).

You need to upgrade to Windows XP Service Pack 3. Keeping your Windows up-to-date is crucial to your computer's security. Please go to the Windows Update Site (using Internet Explorer) and download and install Windows XP - Service Pack 3.

Other than this, your logs are looking pretty good. How is the computer running, and remaining problems?

Thanks.
