HI…
A couple of weeks ago I downloaded Shockwave Unlimited Club, and downloaded and played games on my computer. (I paid for this).
Anyway, last night, I got a notice from my anti-virus protection that a virus was found in some of the downloaded games files. Those were automatically deleted.
Then, some strange minor things with my computer, mostly what I've noticed so far is that my start up has changed… a couple of things got put in there that I didn't put in.
Anyway, so today, I get another notice, and same Shockwave, different game.
Well, had all the games deleted except 2, and this one wasn't there, so I am wondering what else is left.
I see that it's possible now that this worm has written itself to some of my other files….
Can anyone help me identify what any potential problems there are and help me to get rid of them?

Thank you so much!
Lynne

Hi Lynne488,

:welcome:

My name is Tomk. I would be glad to take a look at your log and help you with solving any malware problems. HijackThis logs can take a while to research, so please be patient and I'd be grateful if you would note the following:

  • I will be working on your Malware issues, this may or may not, solve other issues you have with your machine.
  • The fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for the issues on this machine.
  • Please continue to review my answers until I tell you your machine appears to be clear. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.
  • It's often worth reading through these instructions and printing them for ease of reference.
  • If you don't know or understand something, please don't hesitate to say or ask!! It's better to be sure and safe than sorry.
  • Please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
Download - ATF Cleaner
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.

(If you use FireFox or the Opera browser
To keep saved passwords, click No at the prompt.)

It's normal after running ATF cleaner that the PC will be slower to boot the first time or two.

Then

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop.

  • Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
  • At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location and post the results.
  • Note: If you receive a notice that some of the items couldn't be removed, that they have been added to the delete on reboot list, please reboot (shut down your computer then restart it).
Also "copy/paste" a new HijackThis log file into this thread.

Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.
Hi Tomk… thanks for your help! I did the ATF cleaner, and now trying to do the Anti malware….hmmmmm…. It won't let me save it, gives me an error message. And then a virus message from my online protection comes on, saying they found another virus. This happened each of the several times I tried it. I also tried to download from several different places…. OK, and now this forum is all messed up….. I mean, the view, is really different than what it was a few minutes ago…. I am going to run another hijack this log… so I'll be back in a minute….
OK.. new log….

Lynne488,

Let's try a more powerful tool.

A. Please download ComboFix by sUBs from HERE or HERE directly to your Desktop.

Note: If you already have ComboFix on your machine, please DELETE it from your desktop before downloading the newest version.

B. Now we must disable some of your security programs so that they do not interfere with the running of our tools:

I'm not positive how to disable your anti-virus. There is probably an icon in the lower right of your screen by your clock. You should be able to right click on it and stop real time scanning. If you are unable to do this, please continue with instructions.

C.Go to [external image: Posted Image] -> Run -> copy/paste the following single line command in the runbox & click OK

"%userprofile%\desktop\combofix.exe" /killall

[external image: Posted Image]
  • DO NOT USE your computer for any other purpose while ComboFix is running.
  • ComboFix may restart your computer, this is normal.
  • When finished, it will produce a log, ComboFix.txt.
  • Please post ComboFix.txt in your next reply along with a new HijackThis log.

Notes:

1. Do not mouse-click Combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
2. Do not "re-run" Combofix. If you have a problem, reply back for further instructions.
3. ComboFix may reset a number of Internet Explorer's settings, including making I-E the default browser.
4. Combofix prevents autorun of ALL CD, floppy and USB devices to assist with malware removal & increase security. If this is an issue or makes it difficult for you – please tell your helper.
5. CF disconnects your machine from the internet. The connection is automatically restored before CF completes its run. If CF runs into difficulty and terminates prematurely, the connection can be manually restored by restarting your machine.
OK… ComboFix log..

COMBOFIX-Script

  • Please open Notepad (Start -> Run -> type notepad in the Open field -> OK) and copy and paste the text present inside the code box below:

    KILLALL::

    File::
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\tmpF1CC6.FOT
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\tmpB05C6.FOT
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\tmp8BAC6.FOT
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\tmp808C6.FOT
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\tmp24EC6.FOT
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\tmp069C6.FOT
    C:\WINDOWS\popcinfo.dat
  • Save this as CFScript.txt and change the "Save as type" to "All Files" and place it on your desktop.

    [external image: Posted Image]
  • Very Important! Temporarily disable your anti-virus, script blocking and any anti-malware real-time protection before following the steps below. They can interfere with ComboFix or remove some of its embedded files which may cause "unpredictable results".
  • Referring to the screenshot above, drag CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe.
  • ComboFix will now run a scan on your system. It may reboot your system when it finishes. This is normal.
  • When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Copy and paste the contents of the log in your next reply.
CAUTION: Do not mouse-click ComboFix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

Now try Malwarebytes again:

Gonna go try to download ATF now :) oops… i mean Malware :D
OK… the good news so far that I was able to download and run the Malware program… I have a question tho… I still have a couple of Shockwave references in the logs, and they really shouldn't be there after I have deleted them…. Anyway, I know that many many people play games thru this place. Do you think that was the problem? Where the virus came in from? Or could it have been something else? Also, very important to me, can you tell if someone is able to track my movements and my keystrokes? (passwords, etc). I am a little, ok.. a LOT dumb about that, and that's what I am afraid happened. be right back with a new Hlog…. Here's my Malware log…. Dang! Just went to log into my online e-mail, and got this from my Anti Virus… C:\Documents and Settings\Lynne\Desktop\ mbam-setup.exe infection Win32Adclicker.JO (it was deleted, but these keep popping up). Got this when I ran a AntiSpy scan…. Name: bifrost Category: backdoor description: Backdoors provide a potential opening for intruders to gain access to your computer. :(
Lynne488,

Do you think that was the problem? Where the virus came in from? Or could it have been something else?

Sorry. I can't tell. Everything I cleaned off your machine was adware. It looks like your Anit-Virus did it's job and stopped the really bad stuff.

Also, very important to me, can you tell if someone is able to track my movements and my keystrokes? (passwords, etc).

Win32/IRCbot.dh is a backdoor trojan and can do just that. If I had found this on your system, I would have given you the following warning:

Your computer appears to have been infected by a backdoor trojan. These programs have the ability to steal passwords and other information from your system. If you use your computer for sensitive purposes such as internet banking then I recommend you take the following steps immediately:

  • Use another, uninfected computer to change all your internet passwords, especially ones with financial implications such as banks, paypal, ebay, etc. You should also change the passwords for any other site you use.
  • Call your bank(s), credit card company or any other institution which may be affected and advise them that your login/password or credit card information may have been stolen and ask what steps to take with regard to your account.
  • Consider what other private information could possibly have been taken from your computer and take appropriate steps
This infection can almost certainly be cleaned, but as the malware could be configured to run any program a remote attacker requires, it will be impossible to be 100% sure that the machine is clean, if this is unacceptable to you then you should consider reformatting the system partition and reinstalling Windows as this is the only 100% sure answer.

If you wish to reformat then please let me know in your next response.

As I said, it looks like your Anti-virus program did it's job, but there is no way to be 100% certain. Sorry.

  • Please open HijackThis and run Do a system scan only
  • Check the boxes next to ONLY the entries listed below(if present):
    • R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/customize/…/search/ie.html

Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update.

Updating Java:
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 7.
  • Scroll down to where it says "The Java SE Runtime Environment (JRE) allows end-users to run Java applications".
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • In the pull down menu next to Platform select Windows
  • Check the box that says: "I agree to the Java SE Runtime Environment 6 License Agreement"
  • Click Continue
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation and save to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u7-windows-i586-p.exe to install the newest version.
Now to Clean out the Java cache:

Go into the Control Panel and double-click the Java Icon. [external image: Posted Image]
  • Under Temporary Internet Files, click the Settings… button
  • click the Delete Files button.
  • There are three options in the window to clear the cache - Leave all 3 Checked
    • Downloaded Applets
      Downloaded Applications
      Other Files
  • Click OK on Delete Temporary Files Window
Note: This deletes ALL the Downloaded Applications and Applets from the CACHE.
  • Click OK to leave the Temporary Files Settings
  • Click OK to leave the Java Control Panel.

Because of the continuing problems that you have, let's run a couple more scans.

Please download SDFix and save it to your Desktop.

You should print out these instructions, or copy them to a NotePad file for reading while in Safe Mode, because you will not be able to connect to the Internet to read from this site.

Double click on SDFix.exe. It should automatically extract a folder called SDFix to your system drive (usually C:\). Please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key repeatedly;
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu with options should appear;
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press "Enter".
  • Choose your usual user account.
  • Open the SDFix folder and double click on RunThis.bat to start the script.
  • Type Y and press Enter to begin the script.
  • It will start cleaning your PC and then prompt you to press any key to Reboot.
  • Press any key to restart the PC.
  • Your system will take longer than normal to restart as the fixtool will be removing files.
  • When the desktop loads the Fixtool will complete the removal and display Finished.
  • Press any key to end the script and to load your desktop icons.
  • A text file should automatically open, so please copy the contents and post them here.

Please go to Kaspersky website and perform an online antivirus scan.

  • Read through the requirements and privacy statement and click on Accept button.
  • It will start downloading and installing the scanner and virus definitions. You will be prompted to install an application from Kaspersky. Click Run.
  • When the downloads have finished, click on Settings.
  • Make sure these boxes are checked (ticked). If they are not, please tick them and click on the Save button:
    • Spyware, Adware, Dialers, and other potentially dangerous programs
      Archives
      Mail databases
  • Click on My Computer under Scan.
  • Once the scan is complete, it will display the results. Click on View Scan Report.
  • You will see a list of infected items there. Click on Save Report As….
  • Save this report to a convenient place. Change the Files of type to Text file (.txt) before clicking on the Save button.
  • Please post this log in your next reply.
HI…. Thank you so much for helping me out!!! I tend to be pretty careful about what i do on my laptop, so I don't want to take chances. Do you feel that it makes sense to reinstall windows, as suggested in the "backdoor" portion of your note? I could do this if you feel it's better……
Okie dokie….
Java updated :)
