Hi, and Welcome to WhatTheTech :)

My name is jpshortstuff. I would be glad to take a look at your log and help you with solving any malware problems. HijackThis logs can take a while to research, so please be patient and I'd be grateful if you would note the following:
  • I will be working on your Malware issues, this may or may not, solve other issues you have with your machine.
  • The fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for the issues on this machine.
  • Please continue to review my answers until I tell you your machine appears to be clear. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.
  • It's often worth reading through these instructions and printing them for ease of reference.
  • If you don't know or understand something, please don't hesitate to say or ask!! It's better to be sure and safe than sorry.
  • Please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.
Although there is always a chance that any problem is malware related, this one doesn't sound like one. I will check for any malware on your machine but I may well have to refer you to out Techs if you come back clean.

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
Download - ATF Cleaner»
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.

(If you use FireFox or the Opera browser
To keep saved passwords, click No at the prompt.)

It's normal after running ATF cleaner that the PC will be slower to boot the first time or two.

Lets get some detailed system information.
  • Download random's system information tool (RSIT) by random/random from here and save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on RSIT.exe to run RSIT.
  • Click Continue at the disclaimer screen.
  • Once it has finished, two logs will open. Please post the contents of both log.txt (<info.txt (<
Please go to Kaspersky website and perform an online antivirus scan.
  • Read through the requirements and privacy statement and click on Accept button.
  • It will start downloading and installing the scanner and virus definitions. You will be prompted to install an application from Kaspersky. Click Run.
  • When the downloads have finished, click on Settings.
  • Make sure these boxes are checked (ticked). If they are not, please tick them and click on the Save button:
    • Spyware, Adware, Dialers, and other potentially dangerous programs
      Archives
      Mail databases
  • Click on My Computer under Scan.
  • Once the scan is complete, it will display the results. Click on View Scan Report.
  • You will see a list of infected items there. Click on Save Report As….
  • Save this report to a convenient place. Change the Files of type to Text file (.txt) before clicking on the Save button.
  • Please post this log in your next reply.
Thanks.
jpshortstuff, Sorry for the delay of this reply. Thanks for the assistance. Here are the info.txt file and log.txt file from RSIT. There was nothing found in the Kaspersky scan. I have not been getting the DNS error nearly as much as when i originally posted this thread. My reason for posting in the first place is because my isp's tech support was saying there was nothing wrong with my connection and that i probably had a virus. But, as i am sure you know, this advice from my isp probably isn't worth much. info.txt logfile of random's system information tool 1.02 2008-09-24 12:13:25 ======Uninstall list====== –>rundll32.exe Hi

No worries about the delay, we got plenty of time :)

Well, you look pretty clean to me. No Malware is evident in those logs and as you say KAV came back clean. There are one or two things I would do just to tidy up, though nothing that would fix these DNS errors.

Although Azureus is a clean program itself, any form of P2P/File Sharing can lead to infection as you have no way of knowing where the files are coming from and who could have interfered. Your choice whether to keep it or not, I am just giving you a warning.

If you do choose to remove it, go to Start >> Control Panel >> Add/Remove Programs and click Remove by the program.

You can also get rid of:
Java™ 6 Update 5
in that list, as it is outdated and you already have the latest version.

You need to disable TeaTimer, so that it doesn't interfere with our fix.

This is a two step process.
First step:
  • Right-click the Spybot Icon in the System Tray (looks like a blue/white calendar with a padlock symbol)
  • If you have the new version 1.5, click once on Resident Protection, then right-click the Spybot icon again and make sure Resident Protection is now Unchecked. The Spybot icon in the System tray should now be now colorless.
  • If you have Version 1.4, Click on Exit Spybot S&D Resident
Second step, For both versions :
  • Open Spybot S&D
  • Click Mode, choose Advanced Mode
  • Go to the bottom of the vertical panel on the left, click Tools
  • Then, also in left panel, click Resident shows a red/white shield.
  • If your firewall raises a question, say OK
  • In the Resident protection status frame, Uncheck the box labeled Resident "Tea-Timer"(Protection of over-all system settings) active
  • OK any prompts.
  • Use File, Exit to terminate Spybot
  • Reboot your machine for the changes to take effect.
Open HijackThis. Hit Do A System Scan Only. Place a check next to the following items (if present):
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Alcmtr] ALCMTR.EXE (this is an unnecessary startup program and is suspected to collect some information about the user.)
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [nwiz] nwiz.exe /install (The file isn't present on your machine so you can fix this safely)

Close all browsers and windows except for HijackThis and click Fix Checked.

Re-enable TeaTimer:
  • Open Spybot
  • Click on Tools in bottom left hand corner.
  • Click on Resident.
  • Check Resident "TeaTimer" box.
  • Click on Allow change ONLY to popup box with:
  • Entry: SpybotSD Teatimer
  • Click on Mode, select Default mode
  • Close Spybot
You can now delete any tools I had you download and use unless you wish to keep them.

Since I do not believe the problem you are having is malware related, I recommend you post in one of Tech forums for assistance. Start a topic in one of these forums (whichever you feel is most appropriate):
Microsoft Windows
Browsers, Internet and Email
Networking (Hardware)

State your problem clearly and perhaps include a link to this topic so that the helpers there can see what has already been done. Before you go however, I just have a few tips for keeping clean and safe that we always give after checking a computer for malware.

Set correct settings for files that should be hidden in Windows XP
  • Click Start > My Computer > Tools menu (at top of page) > Folder Options > View tab.
  • Under "Hidden files and folders" if necessary select Do not show hidden files and folders.
  • If unchecked please checkHide protected operating system files (Recommended)
  • If necessary check "Display content of system folders"
  • If necessary Uncheck Hide file extensions for known file types.
  • Click OK
Now that your system appears to be clean, theres just a few steps I'd like you to take to prevent any future infections.
  • You don't appear to be running any third party Firewall software.

Install a firewall! Without a firewall you are very susceptible to being hacked, and people could gain access to your computer. If you don't have a firewall I strongly recommend you download ONE of the following:
    1) Comodo
    2) Agnitum
    3) Sunbelt/Kerio

  • Keeping your Windows up-to-date is crucial to your computer's security. Please go to the Windows Update Site (using Internet Explorer) and download and install all critical updates on a regular basis.

  • Make sure you update your Anti-Virus software regularly, new viruses are being developed all the time.

  • Some more programs that it would be useful to have [OPTIONAL but RECOMMENDED]:

SpywareBlaster is another real-time scanner that prevents most spyware from even being installed.
    Freely available: Download SpywareBlaster

Download and install the free version of WinPatrol. This program protects your computer in a variety of ways and will work well with your existing security software. Have a look at this tutorial to help you get started with the program.
Also, please read this great article by Tony Klein: So How Did I Get Infected In First Place

Glad we could be of assistance.

Please reply to this thread once more if you are satisfied so that we can mark the problem as resolved.

Stay Clean!
