At least I discovered that Browzar works for surfing the internet but it is limited for the add ons so i am using my own computer to post this request. I have used Vundo fix, Fix Vundo, superantispyware remover, spybot search and destroy, and various others recommend in forums that i have read. I checked to see if they were safe before hand by reading online about the programs. I managed to get the red x off my hard drive but when i restarted the red x came back and my browser would take me anywhere but where i wanted to go. It went to probably 5 pages before it landed on something it wanted . I have removed the red x 4 times! There were MANY viruses and trojans on the computer that appeared to be removed. Browzar works tho, thank God! I may as well work through this since it's bound to happen again, since it's my daughter's computer I'm working on. I do have hijack this but never used it to post on a forum. I have run it though just to see what it was. I have kill box and process viewing apps. Now the antivirus/spyware programs all run clean but the red x is there and the web browsers dont work except for Browzar. Please lead me through the process. :pullhair: Sincerely, Barb M. :wavey:

I would like to add that my daughter has only about 900 mb left onher 9 gig c partition, where most of her hard drive space of about 60 gig is on her new d drive partition. I don't know how that would affect the virus scan but it might answer some questions, lol.

THANKS again!

Sincerely, Barb M :wavey:.
Stay with this topic until I give you the all clean post.

You might want to print these instructions out.

I suggest you do this:

Double-click My Computer.
Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
Click the View tab.
Clear "Hide file extensions for known file types."
Under the "Hidden files" folder, select "Show hidden files and folders."
Clear "Hide protected operating system files."
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Please do not delete anything unless instructed to.

Next:

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
Download - ATF Cleaner»

Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.

(If you use FireFox or the Opera browser
To keep saved passwords, click No at the prompt.)

It's normal after running ATF cleaner that the PC will be slower to boot the first time.

Next:

Download ComboFix from Here or Here to your Desktop.
**Note: In the event you already have Combofix, please delete it from your desktop and download this new version . It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop**
——————————————————————–
  • Close any open browsers and make sure you are disconnected from the net. Unplug the cable if need be before running combofix.
  • WARNING: IF you have not already done so Combofix will disconnect your machine from the Internet when it starts
  • Please do not re-connect your machine back to the Internet until Combofix has completely finished.
——————————————————————–

Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
When finished, it will produce a report for you.
Please post the "C:\ComboFix.txt" along with a new HijackThis log for further review

****Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall or freeze ****

*If there is no internet connection when Combofix has completely finished then restart your computer to restore back the connections.

Give it atleast 20-30 minutes to finish if needed.
Hello! I did each thing you asked in order that you posted them. Thanks for the clear instructions. Everything went just as you said it would. The red x is still there but IE works much better! Here are the logs you asked for , combo-fix first , then the hijack this log.

Thank you for your help!
Sincerely, Barb M
I would uninstall Browzar
http://www.theregister.co.uk/2006/09/04/browzar_backlash/
http://yro.slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=06/09/03/1917211

You need to disable some programs that can stop our fix.

You need To disable TeaTimer, it can stop our fix.

The best way is to do both, Right click the system tray icon and shut down. This will reset TT's registry snapshot. Then, open spybot in advanced mode and turn it off. When cleaning is done, open Spybot in advanced mode to turn back on.

Once fix is completed in the all clear post!!

Winpatrol

Please disable Winpatrol, as it may hinder the removal of some entries. You can re-enable it after you're clean.
Right click the running icon of winpatrol, and choose exit.

SpySweeper

To disable SpySweeper Shields

  • Open SpySweeper.
  • Click Shield Settings on the right
(or Shields on the left, depending what screen you're on).
  • Click Internet Explorer and uncheck all items.
  • Click Windows System and uncheck all items.
  • Click Hosts File and uncheck all items.
  • Click Startup Programs and uncheck all items.
  • Close SpySweeper. After all of the fixes are complete it is very important that you enable Real-time Protection again.

Copy/paste the text in the Codebox below into notepad:

Here's how to do that:
Click Start > Run type Notepad click OK.
This will open an empty notepad file:

Take your mouse, and place your cursor at the beginning of the text in the box below, then click and hold the left mouse button, while pulling your mouse over the text. This should highlight the text. Now release the left mouse button. Now, with the cursor over the highlighted text, right click the mouse for options, and select 'copy'. Now over the empty Notepad box, right click your mouse again, and select 'paste' and you will have copied and pasted the text.

File::
C:\WINDOWS\system32\hihkj.ini2

Folder::
C:\Program Files\AskPBar

Save this file to your desktop, Save this as "CFScript"

Here's how to do that:
1.Click File;
2.Click Save As… Change the directory to your desktop;
3.Change the Save as type to "All Files";
4.Type in the file name: CFScript
5.Click Save …

[external image: Posted Image]

Drag CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe

Then post the results log and a new HijackThis log.

Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.
 Hello! IE is working well and I'm using it to reply to you now.I did all you asked, however I was recommended to disable spy sweeper , and I dind't know i had it on here and couldn't find it to disable. I disabled the rest, and bitdefender too.

I am concerned because my freespace is down to 230 mb on here! dont know what is taking up the space…….

I realized that I was still connected to the intnet, not like the last time when i did my combofix scan, but none of the windows were open. I also deleted browzar.

The computer before the scan and after was running smoothly and the red was there before and after the scan on the hard drive. iE and Firefox both take me where I want to go without delay!
:D

Combofix updated itself and this was the program I downloaded from your new link so, there's a new version available, ;)

THANKS so much again for your help.

here is the log

Have you run ATF cleaner for every user? If you have more then one person that has a user login, login as that user and run ATF cleaner.

Good job

  • Click START then RUN
  • Now type Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK. Note the space between the X and the U, it needs to be there.

Hello! Thanks for your help! All appears to be working well, cept for the stupid red x on the hard drive. Is there a way to change that? you make the whole thing look easy :weee: Sincerely, Barb M.
Launch Notepad (Start>All Programs>Accessories), and copy/paste all the Quoted REGEDIT below to it. Don't forget to include REGEDIT4.
Save in: Desktop
File Name: fixme.reg
Save as Type: * files
Click: Save

REGEDIT4

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Drive Icons]

Save this as fix.reg Choose to save as *all files and place it on your desktop.
It should look like this: [external image: Posted Image]
Doubleclick on it and when it asks you if you want to merge the contents to the registry, click yes/ok.
(In case you are unsure how to create a reg file, take a look here with screenshots.)

Reboot and "copy/paste" a new HijackThis log file into this thread.

Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.
Hello! I did the registry fix, and after start up the red x is still on the hard drive. Odd, how after i did several scans the red x dissapeared when the scan was over, but reappeared on start up. The web page seems ok. and nothing else is odd.
