Hello guys,

Yesterday, Sept 17th, I was downloading some games from a couple of freeware sites and I thought all was going fine. Suddenly, I noticed on my next Google search, the website I clicked on ended up going to an adsite similar to the search term. Also, my Windows Update feature apparently was disabled as it was unable to connect to the site. Since then, I ran Ad-Aware a few times and it found some infections. I even ran another scan with Norton (I know, not the best choice as most techs tell me.)

In the meantime, I am using Firefox (which I suppose I should have done in the first place!) and able to navigate to sites by typing the web address but the browser feature using a search engine is still fouled up. I also notice my laptop is running a bit slower than it was before and of course the internet surfing has slowed down too.

Please look at my HijackThis log below as this is my first time dealing with a hijacker. I am pretty computer literate so anything you suggest to do or any terms you use I just may have a good understanding of it already as I do love to learn all I can about computers.

A big Thank You in advance to any tech who can help me! :) :notworthy:

Hi lucella31, Welcome to the forums![external image: Posted Image]

My name is Ken, on these forums I am known as ktreffin. I will be helping you with your current problem. I know that you need your computer working as quickly as possible, and I will work hard to help see that it happens.

I am sorry that there has been such a delay in getting to your log.

If you still need assistance, please do the following:

Step #1: Please post a new Hijack This Log

  • Launch Hijackthis.
  • Click on the Do a system scan and save a logfile button. It will scan and the log should open in notepad.
  • Copy/Paste the log to your next reply please.
Don't use the Analyse This button, its findings are dangerous if misinterpreted.
Don't have Hijackthis fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

Step #2: Please make an Uninstall List using HiJackThis.

To access the Uninstall Manager you would do the following:
1. Start HijackThis
2. Click on the Config button
3. Click on the Misc Tools button
4. Click on the Open Uninstall Manager button.
5. Click on the Save list… button and specify where you would like to save this file. When you press Save button a notepad will open with the contents of that file. Simply copy and paste the contents of that notepad here in a reply.

If you have been able to get the problem resolved, please let me know so I can have this topic closed.

Thanks,
Ken
Hi Ken! Thanks for the reply. I realize there a huge amount of posts in this forum so I was patiently waiting my turn. As I'm at work right now, I will post the new HJ log and the Uninstall List tonight. To update you, I have been able to use the internet by using the Firefox browser (I usually use IE 7), but I set my home page to Wikipedia (just as an example for testing purposes) instead of a search engine such as Google, which is usually my home page. Since I first posted here, I have not used the Google search engine as I am afraid that the Hijack might be connected with it. However, I am able to do a search with Live.com. Weird, huh? Have you heard of any malware that hijacks Google and Yahoo specifically? Well, I guess you won't know until you see the log, but I just wanted to give you more information and I didn't want you to close this topic. Thanks! :)
Ok Ken, I have the logs you requested….HiJackThis Log and Uninstall List.
Thanks!

GOOD LUCK! :notworthy:
Hello lucella31,

Before we begin, I need to stress some important points to you.
  • Some of the instructions I will provide may get quite long. I highly recommend that you print a copy of them off or copy them into Notepad.
  • If at any time you have questions, please DON'T hesitate to ask!
  • Please keep in mind that the instructions I give are specific to your current problem and should not be used on other systems.
  • Also, please remember that there may be multiple issues with your system, please continue to follow this thread until I have given you an "All Clean!"
Ready? Lets go….

Step #1: Upload malware for scanning

I'd like you to check a file/some files for malware.
  • Go to VirusTotal or Jotti's

C:\Documents and Settings\Amber\css.exe

  • Copy/Paste the first file on the list into the white Upload a file box.
  • Click Send/Submit, and the file will upload to VirusTotal/Jotti, where it will be scanned by several anti-virus programmes.
  • After a while, a window will open, with details of what the scans found.
  • Save the complete results in a Notepad/Word document on your desktop.
  • Repeat for all files on the list.
*===============================================*

Step #2: Download and Run Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop.
  • Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
  • At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to:
    • Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    • Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • Then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform full scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. please copy and paste the log into your next reply.
  • If you accidently close it, the log file is saved here and will be named like this: C:\Documents and Settings\\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\mbam-log-date (time).txt
*===============================================*

Step #3: Things to put in your next reply

Please post the following in your next reply:
  • Contents of the Jotti or Virus Total Report
  • A New Hijack This Log
  • Contents of the Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware Log
Thanks,
Ken
Hey Ken, I just got started scanning a couple of files with Jotti virus scan, however I am unclear on one thing. You mention to scan all files on the "list". Do you mean all the files beginning with C: listed on the HJT report? I'm confused because you also included a QUOTE for the file C:\Documents and Settings\Amber\css.exe Do you want me to only scan this file? Also, I am having trouble accessing the file listed above so at first I assumed it was a hidden file, but it looks like my firewall is blocking it. I do have Norton but I am not sure how to unblock this file from the firewall. I suppose I will have to check their website. But I just want to be clear about which files to scan….so you don't want me to try and scan the files that start with R3, 02, 03, etc. , right?
Oh goodness….I am sorry I wasn't clear…..

All I need scanned is the one file:

C:\Documents and Settings\Amber\css.exe

You shouldn't have to actually find the file itself. Just go to the Jotti or Virus Total website and in the "white box" paste the path "C:\Documents and Settings\Amber\css.exe". The computer should do the rest…..

Sorry about that….If I had you scan everything in the HijackThis log, I would never see you again…… ;)

Let me know how you make out…

Ken
Hey Ken, LOL, thanks for the clarification that I don't need to scan every file in the HJT log. For some reason my computer is having trouble finding the css.exe file that you want me to scan with Jotti. I cut and paste it once before and it informed me that a firewall was blocking it or it didn't exist. Then I did a manual search for the folder to see that it did exist and it found nothing. Hmm..weird, huh? Should I just move on to the next step and install and use the Anti-Malware program and go from there? Thanks Ken.
Yes, that's fine……Go ahead and move on and I will research that a little more to find out about it….. Let me know if you have any other problems. Ken
Ken,

OK, hopefully I'm on my way to a clean slate!
Thanks so much for your help thus far Ken.
 :notworthy:
Hi lucella31,

Well things are looking better. Looks like Malwarebytes' took out all kinds of nasties. Can you please post a new HijackThis log for me? It looks like Word Wrap was on in Notepad, and it screwed up the formatting of the log. You can turn off word wrap by doing the following:

  • Open Notepad.
  • Go to Format and untick Word Wrap.

Please post a new HijackThis log, and I will take a look and see where we stand.

Thanks,
Ken
Sorry about that Ken. Here's the HJT log again:

Hi lucella31,

Thanks for the new log. That makes things much easier to read!!

I am not seeing anything else in your HijackThis log. How are things running? Are you still experiencing any kind of problems?

Are you familiar with "Webaroo"? I see an entry in your HijackThis log, and I want to make sure you are aware of it…..

Before I give you the "All Clean" I would like to get one more scan, just to make sure we got everything……

Step #1: Run Kaspersky Online Scan

Please go to Kaspersky website to perform an online antivirus scan.
  • Read through the requirements and privacy statement and click on Accept button.
  • It will start downloading and installing the scanner and virus definitions. You will be prompted to install an application from Kaspersky. Click Run.
  • When the downloads have finished, click on Settings.
  • Make sure these boxes are checked (ticked). If they are not, please tick them and click on the Save button:
    • Spyware, Adware, Dialers, and other potentially dangerous programs
    • Archives
    • Mail databases
  • Click on My Computer under Scan.
  • Once the scan is complete, it will display the results. Click on View Scan Report.
  • You will see a list of infected items there. Click on Save Report As….
  • Save this report to your desktop by changing the Files of type to Text file (.txt) before clicking on the Save button.
  • Now close the window.

*===============================================*

Step #2: Things to put in your next reply

Please post the following in your next reply:
  • A New Hijack This Log
  • Contents of the Kaspersky Online Scan Log

Thanks,
Ken
Hi Ken,

Internet Explorer seems to be running fine again as all this time I have been using Firefox. For the first time I finally used Google via IE to search for something and when I clicked on a link, it took me to that site. Looks like things may be cleared up. :)

Yes, I am aware of Webaroo as I had downloaded it a while back.

I had trouble with Kaspersky as I tried a few times but either froze or the connection timed out. I turned off my Norton Anti-Virus to allow the scanner to do its thing as was told to do. I have decided to forego the scan after unsuccessful attempts.

But I do have a new HJT Log:
