I ran AVG and I discovered that I have a virus! I am not very technical-minded, so please bear with me and my possibly senseless questions. Is there a way of healing this or do I have to re-install Windows? My problem is I can't seem to find my original Windows XP Home 2002 SP3 disc. AVG has put it into the VAULT and someone told me that my PC won't reboot because of this. Hence, I'm afraid to turn my PC off!!! What do I do?

Stay with this topic until I give you the all clean post.

You might want to print these instructions out.

I suggest you do this:

Double-click My Computer.
Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
Click the View tab.
Clear "Hide file extensions for known file types."
Under the "Hidden files" folder, select "Show hidden files and folders."
Clear "Hide protected operating system files."
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Please do not delete anything unless instructed to.

We strongly suggest you do this first.
[external image: Posted Image] ERUNT - Download - Homepage
This ensures we have a valid registry backup. ERUNT (Emergency Recovery Utility NT) is a free program that allows you to keep a complete backup of your registry and restore if needed. Removing modern malware infections often requires making changes to the registry, and a corrupt registry can prevent a system from booting. Compatible with Windows NT, 2000, 2003, XP, Vista, 32 & 64-bit versions.
  • Download ERUNT
  • Double-click erunt_setup.exe to run.
  • Follow the prompts and install using the default configuration (setup language, install location, shortcuts…).
  • Say No to the portion that asks you to add ERUNT to the start-up folder, if you like you can enable this option later.
    [external image: Posted Image]
  • Start ERUNT
  • Choose a location for the backup
The default location C:\WINDOWS\ERDNT\[today's date] is preferred
    [external image: Posted Image]
  • The first two check boxes are ticked by default (System registry and Current user registry).
  • Press OK
  • When prompted, click YES to create a new folder.
  • Progress bars will show backup status.
  • A confirmation window will popup when complete. Click OK to close.

Next:

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
Download - ATF Cleaner»
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.

(If you use FireFox or the Opera browser
To keep saved passwords, click No at the prompt.)

It's normal after running ATF cleaner that the PC will be slower to boot the first time or two.

Next:

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop.

  • Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
  • At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected .
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location and post the results.
  • Note: If you receive a notice that some of the items couldn't be removed, that they have been added to the delete on reboot list, please reboot.
Also "copy/paste" a new HijackThis log file into this thread.

Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.
Hello, LDTate! Thank you for helping me out with my issue. Question: With csrss.exe in AVG's vault, will a reboot after having run ATF-Cleaner be a problem? Should I restore said infected file before I do this? Thanks!
Me again. I ran ATF Cleaner and chose under the Main tab, chose SELECT ALL to delete . It didn't prompt me to save passwords, though. Do I have to go to the Firefox tab and tick everything except Firefox Saved Passwords then click or should I have done that before I clicked on ? Have I stuffed something else up? Thank you for being so patient with a Tech-Challenged person like me.

or should I have done that before I clicked on ?

You should have selected that before fixing everything. Can't worry about that now, just move on.
After running ATF Cleaner. Should I re-boot before I download, install and run Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware? Please note that I haven't restored CSRSS.EXE and it is still in the AVG vault. Should I restore it now then reboot? Or is there no need to reboot now? I'm sorry, but I'm worried that if I turn my PC off, it won't boot up again, and I really wouldn't know what to do then!
The csrss.exe which is from Microsoft is located in the c:windows\System32 folder.
The infected csrss.exe file could have been located elsewhere.

Do you have a csrss.exe file in the c:windows\System32 folder.? If so, no need to reboot just ,move on with the fix.
I have followed all the steps as given, and here is the HijackThis log:

We used to subscribe to Webroot Spy Sweeper before going back to using AVG not too long ago. I'm not impressed that Webroot Spy Sweeper didn't catch any of these viruses that were on the PC during one of its scheduled scans. Which software would you recommend to have installed in a PC that would detect (and fix/heal) undesireable stuff? Should I just have Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, or should it be run in conjunction with something else? Is AVG better than Avast, or are they pretty much the same?

Thank you again for taking the time to help!

Should I just have Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, or should it be run in conjunction with something else? Is AVG better than Avast, or are they pretty much the same?

The free version of Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware needs to be manually updated before running scans and isn't a resident scanner. The paid for version does. You just need to remember to run it once a week.
AVG and Avast are equal IMO.

Download ComboFix from Here or Here to your Desktop.
**Note: In the event you already have Combofix, please delete it from your desktop and download this new version . It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop**
——————————————————————–
  • Close any open browsers and make sure you are disconnected from the net. Unplug the cable if need be before running combofix.
  • WARNING: IF you have not already done so Combofix will disconnect your machine from the Internet when it starts
  • Please do not re-connect your machine back to the Internet until Combofix has completely finished.
——————————————————————–

Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
When finished, it will produce a report for you.
Please post the "C:\ComboFix.txt" along with a new HijackThis log for further review

****Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall or freeze ****

*If there is no internet connection when Combofix has completely finished then restart your computer to restore back the connections.

Give it atleast 20-30 minutes to finish if needed.
Questions:
- Once this issue is fixed, what steps should I take to reduce the chances of this happening again?
- Is there some sort of maintenance software I should run on a regular basis to make sure that my PC runs efficiently?
- Is there any way of determining/verifying if a scan result is really a virus or a false positive?

Thank you very much!

Accessing the Web seems to be a lot quicker now. But sometimes, when I try opening a window, it takes a while, and when I click to open a a particular folder it displays a (Not Responding) on top of the window next to the folder name. Also, there are a couple of files that I tried to open and it gives me an error, something to do with the gdiplus.dll?

Thank you again!!!
  • Click START then RUN
  • Now type Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK. Note the space between the X and the U, it needs to be there.

Here's my usual all clean post

    Log looks good :D

    • Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:
      1. From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
      2. Click once on the Security tab
      3. Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
      4. Click once on the Custom Level button.
      5. Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
      6. Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
      7. Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
      8. Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
      9. Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
      10. Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
      11. When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
      12. If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
  • Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.

C:\WINDOWS\gdiplus.dll
C:\WINDOWS\Copy of gdiplus.dll

Did you download a new copy of gdiplus.dll?

Try this:

You can use windows sfc (system file checker) You'd need your XP CD to make this work.
Click Start> Run> type sfc /scannow Note the space.
Thank you so very much!!! ComboFix has been uninstalled, recommended IE option changes implemented. As for gdiplus.dll - my husband did that. I searched high and low and found the XP disk and ran the check. The program still crashes. But… overall I'm very happy that my PC is back to normally! Thank you so very much! Now I know who to turn to when I've got issues!
