Hello. My computer seems to have been hijacked by sweathomepage.com. A popup window claiming my computer has been attacked prompts me to install "anti spyware pro xp" also a "Security Alert" announces that spyware has been found and that my computer has been infected with "last version of PSW x-Vir trojan". Opening Internet Explorer tries to send the browser to sweathomepage.com, and changes my homepage to about:blank. I have run a sweep using Webroot Spysweeper, which found and removed a coupek of problems. Below is a copy of my HiijackThis log. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Hi! Welcome to the forums.
My name is Scotty. I would be glad to take a look at your log and help you with solving any malware problems. HijackThis logs can take a while to research.
Please be patient.

Please make a uninstall list using HijackThis
To access the Uninstall Manager you would do the following:

1. Start HijackThis
2. Click on the Config button
3. Click on the Misc Tools button
4. Click on the Open Uninstall Manager button.
5. Click on the Save list… button and specify where you would like to save this file. When you press Save button a notepad will open with the contents of that file. Simply copy and paste the contents of that notepad here in a reply.
Scotty,
Here is a copy of the uninstall list you requested. In addition to runnnig Webroot Spysweeper I have also run Spybot S&D, which helped resolve many problems I had, as well as my virus scanner. Please let me know if you find any additional problems you may find. A new copy of my HijackThis log is pasted below the uninstall list. Thank you.

Hi

Download SDFix and save it to your Desktop.

Double click SDFix.exe and it will extract the files to %systemdrive%
(Drive that contains the Windows Directory, typically C:\SDFix)

Please then reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, the Advanced Options Menu should appear;
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press Enter.
  • Choose your usual account.
  • Open the extracted SDFix folder and double click RunThis.bat to start the script.
  • Type Y to begin the cleanup process.
  • It will remove any Trojan Services and Registry Entries that it finds then prompt you to press any key to Reboot.
  • Press any Key and it will restart the PC.
  • When the PC restarts the Fixtool will run again and complete the removal process then display Finished, press any key to end the script and load your desktop icons.
  • Once the desktop icons load the SDFix report will open on screen and also save into the SDFix folder as Report.txt
(Report.txt will also be copied to Clipboard ready for posting back on the forum).
  • Finally paste the contents of the Report.txt back in your next reply.

If you already have Combofix, please delete this copy and download it again as it's being updated regularly.

Please visit this webpage for download links, and instructions for running the tool:

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix

Please ensure you read this guide carefully and install the Recovery Console first.

The Windows Recovery Console will allow you to boot up into a special recovery (repair) mode. This allows us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware. It is a simple procedure that will only take a few moments of your time.

Once Recovery Console is installed, you should see a blue screen prompt like the one below:

[external image: Posted Image]

Click Yes to allow Combofix to continue scanning for malware.

When done, a log will be produced. Please post that log and a new HijackThis log in your next reply.

1.Do not mouse-click Combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
2. ComboFix may reset a number of Internet Explorer's settings, including making I-E the default browser.
3. Combofix prevents autorun of ALL CD, floppy and USB devices to assist with malware removal & increase security. If this is an issue or makes it difficult for you – please tell your helper.
4. CF disconnects your machine from the internet. The connection is automatically restored before CF completes its run. If CF runs into difficulty and terminates prematurely, the connection can be manually restored by restarting your machine.

In your next reply post:

New HijackThis log taken after the above scan has run
Scotty,

Below are the logs you requested.

After running these scans, 1/2 of the icons on my desktop have reverted to the default unkonwn application image, including recycle bin, my computer, control panel. (the icons still link to the correct program and work correctly, but are displayed incorrectly and will not return to the correct image) Trying to reset them through the desktop properties does not work.
Hi

Glad to hear the icons are resolved.

Remember to disconnect from the Internet before carrying out the next instruction, and to save the following script before you do.You must
also manually disable your anti-virus and anti-spyware programs. See the link below for instructions on doing this.

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic114351.html

Open Notepad - it must be Notepad, not Wordpad.
Copy the text below in the code box by highlighting all the text with your mouse and pressing Ctrl+C

File::
C:\DOCUME~1\OWNER~1.YOU\LOCALS~1\Temp\gtermddo.sys

Driver::
gtermddo

Registry::
[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\security center\Monitoring\McAfeeAntiVirus]
[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\security center\Monitoring\McAfeeFirewall]

Go to the Notepad window and click Edit > Paste
Then click File > Save
Name the file "CFScript.txt" (including the quotes)
Save the file to your Desktop

[external image: Posted Image]

Refering to the picture above, drag CFScript into ComboFix.exe

  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform full scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.

New HijackThis log taken after the above scans have run
Scotty,

Below are the requested logs. Just so you know, after running the MBAM scan, and clicking "restart", my computer would not reboot. After approx. 5 minutes at the Windows screen displaying the progress bar, I hard booted to restart the computer.

Scotty, Everything seems to be running fine now. Combofix did change the time format to military time (19:41 instead of 7:41), but otherwise all seems to be fine. One last thing. Is there a program to block or remove hyperlinks that display a popup on webpages. For example, on the WhatTheTech homepage, there are hyperlinks in blue, which are meant to redirect the user if he/she clicks on it and are supposed to be there. However, lower on the page are random words which are highlighted in green and double underlined that display a popup advertisement. (Under the Feb 11 article "Great/Cheap Upgrades" the word "PC" displays one.) which are not meant to be there. These appear in both IE and Firefox. Any reccomendations would be appreciated. Thanks for your help.
Hi

My apologies for the delay in returning.

I couldnt see any of those links you decribed but i know the type you mean. Many reputable forums have them, and personally i find them annoying when trying to read something. I suppose something like Ad-Blocker or Ad-Muncher might stop them.

Start a topic here
http://forums.whatthetech.com/Browsers_Int…email_f123.html

You will get better advice as I havent found a need for an ad-blocking program yet.

To reset the time format do this.

Go to Start>Control Panel>Date, Time, Language etc>Change format of numbers, dates, times and under Regional Options select Customise>Time.

In the Time Format box change the HH to hh. Click Apply then OK.

Time for some housekeeping
  • Click START then RUN
  • Now type Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK. Note the space between the x and the /u, it needs to be there.

Malwarebytes Anti-Malware is a good program to keep. If you wish to keep it, use it to do a quick scan once a week and keep it updated.
Remember, only the paid for version offers real-time protection

Here is another couple of free programs I recommend.

Winpatrol
Winpatrol is heuristic protection program, meaning it looks for patterns in codes that work like malware. It also takes a snapshot of your system's critical resources and alerts you to any changes that may occur without you knowing. You can read more about Winpatrol's features here.

You can get a free copy of Winpatrol or use the Plus version for more features.

You can read Winpatrol's FAQ if you run into problems.

Spyware Blaster
SpywareBlaster is a program that is used to secure Internet Explorer by making it harder for ActiveX programs to run on your computer. It does this by disabling known offending ActiveX programs from running at all.

You can download SpywareBlaster from Javacool.

If you need help in using SpywareBlaster, you can read SpywareBlaster's tutorial at Bleeping Computer.

Hosts File
A Hosts file is like a phone book. You look up someone's name in the phone book before calling him/her. Similarly, your PC will look up the website's IP address before you can view the website.

Hosts file will replace your current Hosts file with another one containing well-known advertisement sites, spyware sites and other bad sites. This new Hosts file will protect you by re-directing these bad sites to 127.0.0.1.

Here is a good Hosts file:

MVPS Hosts File

A tutorial about Hosts File can be found at Malware Removal.

Make sure your Windows is ALWAYS up to date!

An unpatched Windows is vulnerable and even with the "best" Antivirus and Firewall installed, malware will find its way through.
So visit http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/ to download and install the latest updates.

Update your Antivirus programs and other security products regularly to avoid new threats that could infect your system.

Here is some great information from experts in this field that will help you stay clean and safe online.
http://forum.malwareremoval.com/viewtopic.php?t=14

Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.

I'd be grateful if you could reply to this post so that I know you have read it and, if you've no other questions, the thread can be closed.
Scotty, I'll run that housecleaning first thing in the morning. As for those links I mentioned before, I knew you wouldn't see them, as they are definitely some type of adware. I had them on another system awhile ago, but can't remember how I got rid of it. I'll give those suggestions a try. Thanks for all your help. Edit: After installing Adblock (for firefox) and adBlock Pro (for IE) those link/popups are blocked. In case you run across this problem with someone else. Thanks again
Hi

Let's have another look then, and be thorough.

Please go to Kaspersky website and perform an online antivirus scan.

  • Read through the requirements and privacy statement and click on Accept button.
  • It will start downloading and installing the scanner and virus definitions. You will be prompted to install an application from Kaspersky. Click Run.
  • When the downloads have finished, click on Settings.
  • Make sure these boxes are checked (ticked). If they are not, please tick them and click on the Save button:
    • Spyware, Adware, Dialers, and other potentially dangerous programs
      Archives
      Mail databases
  • Click on My Computer under Scan.
  • Once the scan is complete, it will display the results. Click on View Scan Report.
  • You will see a list of infected items there. Click on Save Report As….
  • Save this report to a convenient place. Change the Files of type to Text file (.txt) before clicking on the Save button.
  • Please post this log in your next reply.

Once you have installed the Scanner, and the updated definitions, you can disconnect from the Internet and disable your anti-virus, to reduce scanning time. Re-enable the anti-virus before reconnecting to the Internet.
Instructions on disabling a variety of security programs can be found at the link below.

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic114351.html
Scotty, I appreciate the help so far, however since the links are no longer a nuisance at the moment, you can go ahead and mark this thread as resolved. If they return, I can start a new topic then. Again, thanks for all the help.
