Hi there. I am new to the forum and I was hoping for some help to remove a trojan virus I have discovered on my laptop with Vista Home Edition on.

When I ran AVG it recognised close to 16,000 infected files which I deleted via the vault. It recognised it as "Trojan Dropper" Generic.

My computer is slower than usual, and I get quite a few unintended pop ups when I open my IE browser.

Here is my HJ Log stats:

Welcome to the Forums.

The fixes we will use are specific to your problems and should only be used for this issue on this machine.

Please only use this topic to reply to. Do not start another thread.
If any other issues arise let me know.
The process is not instant. Please continue to review my answers until I tell you your machine is clear. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear. So lets do this to the end!

  • Save and quit any work your doing before beginning the fix.
  • All hijackthis logs I ask for should be done in normal mode ( not safe mode)
  • These logs should be done last after you have followed my instructions in the previous post.

Please if you decide to seek help at another forum let us know. There is a shortage of helpers and tying 2 of us up is a waste of time.
If you have any questions about any advice given here please STOP and ask!

1. Open Windows Defender by clicking the Start button Picture of the Start button, clicking All Programs, and then clicking Windows Defender.

2. Click Tools, and then click Options.

3. Under Administrator options, select or clear the Use Windows Defender check box, and then click Save.
Administrator permission required If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.

In your next reply I would like to see:
  • A new HJT log
  • The report from Malwarebytes
Hi Bob4!

Thank you very much for replying to my thread so quickly…it is very much appreciated.

My computer seems to be running fairly well at the moment. The only visible problem is a Widows Defender pop up each time I start-up my computer which recognises the Trojan.Vundo virus. My IE seems to be running fine, other than irregularities with IE (ie; when i sign into MSN Messenger and I have new emails….i click the MSN pop-up for my new emails, but instead of Hotmail opening up, a google.com window opens). Google.com is my homepage however so maybe this isn't a problem. I have strict Pop-Up settings so I would imagine the Virus pop-ups (advertising, etc) are being knocked back by my IE settings.

I have proceeded to disable Windows Defender as you said.

My computer ran its daily AVG full-system scan this morning and found the following:

Trojan horse Generic11.WFJ - C:\Users\Dim\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows]Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\533EGEJ8\cntr[1]
Trojan horse Generic11.WJB - C:\Users\Dim\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows]Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\PMRUT205\cntr[1]
Trojan horse Generic11.WEO - C:\Users\Dim\AppData\Local\Temp\aajkvkbk.dll
Trojan horse Generic11.WEO - C:\Users\Dim\AppData\Local\Temp\ijhkpjvi.dll

The AVG Scan also found several tracking cookies.

I then moved all these infected files to my Virus Vault.

————————————————————————————————————————–

After doing so, I proceeded to do a HJT Log as outlined in your post.

The following were present which I "checked" to fix:

R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant =
O2 - BHO: IP - {000051AF-07E2-461B-BA37-A2AF7E652E7D} - C:\ProgramData\ipd\ipb.dll
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {7E853D72-626A-48EC-A868-BA8D5E23E045} - (no file)

The following were not present:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [MSServer] rundll32.exe C:\Windows\system32\khfGawUn.dll,#1
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [MSServer] rundll32.exe C:\Users\Dim\AppData\Local\Temp\xXPfffeF.dll,#1

—————————————————————————————————————————

After this, I then download and ran Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware as instructed. This is my log:

>>> Note: When I ran the HijackThis Log, a pop-up occured which read:

For some reason your system denied write access to the Hosts file. If any hijacked domains are in this file, HijackThis may NOT be able to fix this.

If that happens, you need to edit the file yourself. To do this, click Start, Run and type:

notepad "C;\Windows\System32\drivers\etc\hosts"

and press nter. Find the line(s) HijackThis reports and delete them. Save the file as "hosts." (with quotes), and reboot.

—————————————————————————————————————————

I hope that helps you :)
Everything looks good.

>>> Note: When I ran the HijackThis Log, a pop-up occured which read:

I forgot I was working a vista machine. :smack:

right click on hijackthis.exe and choose run as administrator.
That will take care of the host file. It protected in vista a bit more than in XP.

I see Malware bytes got some Vundo files. So between that and once we clear old restore points later that ought to shut windows defender up for a bit.

PLease just post a new HJT log for me running it as administrator.

Everything looks good.

Sorry for my confusion, is hijackthis.exe supposed to be a link? Where can I run this as an administrator?
Scrap that, I know what to do now :smack:

Great news ! [external image: Posted Image]

Your log now appears to be clean.

Lets do a few things to tidy up.
Please do these in the order I suggest!

_________________________________________
Please download JavaRa and unzip it to your desktop.

***Please close any instances of Internet Explorer before continuing!***

  • Double-click on JavaRa.exe to start the program.
  • From the drop-down menu, choose English and click on Select.
  • JavaRa will open; click on Remove Older Versions to remove the older versions of Java installed on your computer.
  • Click Yes when prompted. When JavaRa is done, a notice will appear that a logfile has been produced. Click OK.
  • A logfile will pop up. Please save it to a convenient location.

Then download and install Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 7.

SpywareBlaster

Install SpywareBlaster

SpywareBlaster will add a large list of programs and sites to your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from accidentally running or downloading known malicious programs.
After the installation, click Download Latest Protection Updates. When it finishes, click Enable All Protection.

Download and Install a HOSTS File
A Hosts file is a plain text file which prevents your computer from connecting to malware and spyware sites by redirecting the connection request to 127.0.0.1, which is your local address. If you use a proxy server, or if you are on AOL, be sure to read the special instructions.
You can download the MVPS Hosts File and see a HOSTS file tutorial here :
This website also contains useful tips, and links to other resources and utilities.

The infections you had was Vundo

Safe and Happy Surfing. :)
You are an absolute legend mate!! Thank you very much for all your help…my computer seems to be running very nicely once again!! I will gradually move through your list of extra protection steps this evening. I was very mad when I learnt I had the virus….these bastards out there are low-life oxygen-thiefs!! I was very scared at first that some idiot had total control of my computer…that is my wost nightmare….imagine someone having all your details, passowrds, bank details, etc….very nervous hours!! Do you have any idea how I got the Vundo virus? I was very perplexed. I originally had Norton 360, and as I was updating it to Norton 360 (2), I was also downloading the most recent LimeWire update. Something happened during the process of these two downloads I think. I wasn't sure. Since then I removed both programs, and got AVG (the pay version) after being recommended it. It was a very stupid thing to have the P2P program in the first place. I've had LimeWire for a few years coupled with an Anti-Virus protection program and I didnt have any problems…perhaps I just got lucky and I was finally found out? Nonetheless, I thank you once again - absolute legend! Cheers mate.
P.S. What should I do withe the following: a ) Do I leave Windows Defender the way you got me to change it to? b ) Should I leave HijackThis on my PC? c ) Should I leave Malwarebytes on my PC?
Thanks for the kinds words.

Leave Malwarebytes. and HiJackThis on the PC.
Malware bytes is a great program.

Restore windows defender to the way it was originally.

Restore points for Vista:

Please create a 'clean' System Restore Point:
The reason for doing this is in case you need system restore you don't put back all we just took out.
I like Vista… I'll see if I can think of a few

1/ Click the Start Button

2/ From the Start menu click Control panel

3/ In Control Panel click the System Icon

4/ On the Left of the System properties window you will see a list of Tasks, click on the System protection link

5/ In the System Protection window remove the 'Tick' mark from beside the drive you want to disable system restore
on (usually C drive)

6/ A message will now appear asking: 'Are you sure you want to turn System restore off'

7/ Press the Turn System restore Off button

8/ System Restore will now be turned off and old restore point removed.

9/ To re-enable system restore just click your mouse in the box next to the drive you
require system restore to monitor ( a tick will appear in the box), the click the Apply button and system restore will resume monitoring the drive.

10. On the bottom of the system screen click on create . This will create a new restore point. Call it what you wish.
Example: After malware removal.
Hi Bob. I was just wondering if I could question you on one or two more things. I have created a clean system restore, downloaded JavaRa & Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 7, downloaded SpywareBlaster and changed my IE Security settings to those you recommended. I have left the HOSTS at the moment. Do you recommend I download that aswell and then create a backup on Spyware Blaster? I was hesitant because I read that if a web site has moved to a new IP address, an old entry in your Hosts file can render it inaccessible? Ok here are my few questions - what is your advice on: 1) Enabling/Disabling JavaScript 2) What would you set storing Cookies? Prompt or Automatic? 3) What would you save your Cookie Privacy settings to on IE? Thanks again.

Yes I recommend the hosts file.
It simply blocks known bad sites. If a good site moves it should be of no consequence.

I leave java script enabled.

From the privacy box I left my cookie setting at medium.
All though I use Firefox now and have for a while.
I just prefer it.
