Pop Ups in I.E. - can't stop them or find issue

Two years ago I started getting many pop ups - mostly only audio. Ran many different spyware programs and ultimately installed and used Firefox exclusively since then and eliminated the problem. Randomly 2 days ago the pop ups started again (through IE). I've run Spybot, Windows Defender and AVG (free version). Some items have been found and cleaned but to no avail. I downloaded Hijackthis and created a log if that will be helpful. Thank you. I am new to this world of Forums.
Thank you so very much for responding. I am worrying that I may have to re-install windows and start over which will be a huge set back.
Here is the HJT Log I just generated.
Thanks for anything you can do to help. We've got important work to do, but are afraid to put this computer back on the network until we get this resolved..
Have a great weekend.

hi Clairedog,

ok thanks for the info. lets see what we can do.
look in add/remove programs panel and uninstall Mywebsearch.
next you can get a download to use:

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop:

http://www.besttechie.net/tools/mbam-setup.exe

* Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.

* Be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.

* If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.

* Once the program has loaded, select Perform FULL SCAN, then click Scan.

* When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.

* Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.

* When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location. The log can also be opened by going to Start > All Programs > Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware > Logs > log-date.txt

you can also do this:
start HJT, click the "Scan" button. check the items below, close any open windows, then click "Fixed checked"

please post the malwarebytes log.
last: post a new hjt log also.
Thank you so much. I went to eliminate mywebsearch in add/remove, but didn't find that. The closest I found was My Way Search Assistant which I know isn't part of something I needed, so I removed that one on the assumption that perhaps that was the intended one. I then ran Anti-Malware (see log below), I then eliminated all of the items the HJT that you listed and am now sending the Malware log. Thank you again. Please let me know if there are additional steps that I should take. hi Clairedog,

My Way Search Assistant…. so I removed that one..

that was the one.

malwarebytes removed some items. hows it looking on your end now? cruise around and make sure the pop ups are gone. please post one more hjt log.
Kept Safari open all night, went on line. Seems to be working well now. I've just ran a HJT and copied the log below.
I appreciate your help so very much. Is this just something that you do for fun? Is there a way that I can help support this process. I've never known that something like this existed before and just think it is amazing that there are people out there who are willing to help perfect strangers like me.

I hope you had a great weekend. The log is below. I hope not to be back in touch on this, (or any other issue), but is good to know that whatthetech is there.

Thanks.

hi Clairedog,

ok good. your welcome. yes I do this for fun when i have the time, i also answer posts in the Spybot search and destroy forum. How to support it? donations to the site are always welcome.

if all is good on your end: couple of things;

according to this:
[MSConfig] C:\WINDOWS\PCHealth\HelpCtr\Binaries\MSConfig.exe /auto
it looks like you have disabled some start up items via Msconfig. These items may not show up in a hjt log if not checked.

your version of AVG 7.5 i think will no longer be updated after 12/31/08. you will have to "upgrade" to AVG 8.0 or find another antivirus. i can provide links to some if you want.
keep malwarebytes. its a good idea to keep it updated even if you dont scan that much with it. A persons scanning frequency is really a function of ones computer habits.
Java update and system restore points:

java:
Vulnerabilities/exploits in versions of Sun Java may be responsible for some malware installs via your browser.

It is important to keep Sun Java up to date and also to remove older versions.

* 1. Uninstall old versions of Sun Java via Add/Remove Programs.
* 2. Click the Remove or Change/Remove button
* 3. Reboot your PC if prompted.

to check if you have the latest version of Java and to download the latest version:

http://www.java.com/en/download/installed.jsp

system restore:
One of the features of Windows ME,XP and Vista is the System Restore option, however if malware infects a computer it is possible that the malware could be backed up in the System Restore folder. Therefore, clearing the restore points is a good idea after malware is removed.

To reset your restore points, please note that you will need to log into your computer with an account which has full administrator access. You will know if the account has administrator access because you will be able to see the System Restore tab. If the tab is missing, you are logged in under a limited account.

(winXP)

1. Turn off System Restore. (deletes old possibly infected restore point)
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

2. Reboot.

3. Turn ON System Restore.(new restore points on a clean system)
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK, then reboot

for your reference:

My Top Ten List
The Short Version:

1) Keep your OS, (Windows) browser (IE, FireFox) and other software up to date.
2) Know what you are installing to your computer. Alot of software can come bundled with unwanted add-ons. Do you trust the source?
3) Install, keep updated: one antivirus and two or three anti-malware applications.
4) Don't click on links or install files you receive via E-Mail, IM, Chat Rooms or Social Sites, no matter how tempting or legitimate the message may be.
5) Don't click on ads/pop ups or offers from websites to install software to your computer.
6) Don't click on offers to "scan" your computer.
7) Set up and use limited accounts rather than administrator accounts.
8) Install and understand the limitations of a third party software firewall.
9) Consider using an alternate browser and E-mail client.
10) If your habits include visiting or downloading/installing files from: warez, crack sites or p2p (file sharing) networks: then you are much more likely to encounter malicious code. Do you trust the source?

happy safe surfing
Good. Did the un-restore reboot - restore reboot and deleted then downloaded new Java. I think it is good. I would welcome malware suggestions. Presently I have Malwarebytes now to go along with Spybot & Windows Defender, AVG & Ad-Aware SE Personal. You can see I've been trying; however, I would welcome your suggestions. We also have Symantec Anti-Virus running and updating the virus files (though not the most current version of the program). We have v.10.1.0.394. Thanks again.
hi Clairedog ok good. looks lke you have 5 anit-malware apps. personally i think 3 would be plenty. i would keep malwarebytes, spybot and defender, but its reall up to you. My mistake, you have AV G anti-malware not the antivirus version. As long as you can update and the subscription hasnt run out then that Norton AV should be fine. You mentioned you "Kept Safari open all night, went on line" thats apples browser. maybe you where surfing via a ipod? Make sure it all looks good via Internet Explorer if you havent already. As for malware in general if you know alittle about how you get malware then you will be ahead of the pack.
Thanks again for everything. Yes, we definitely know the risks and are very conservative. My mistake on the browser. Meant to say Firefox. Hope you have a great weekend and once again. You've saved us.
