Howdy Virgil and welcome to the forums,

1. If you don't know, stop and ask! Don't keep going on.
2. Please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.
3. Please continue to respond until I give you the "All Clear"
(Just because you can't see a problem doesn't mean it isn't there)
4. Please note you'll need to have Administrator privileges to perform the fixes. (XP accounts are Administrator by default)
5. Please let me know if you are using a computer with multiple accounts, as this can affect the instructions given.

If you can do those things, everything should go smoothly

Please note that all instructions given are customised for this computer only, the tools used may cause damage if used on a computer with different infections.

If you think you have similar problems, please post a log in the HJT forum and wait for help.

Note: I am still in training at Malware Removal, however I will be working under the direct supervision of one of our Malware Experts. Any recommendations will first be approved before being given to you. Because of this, there may be a short delay in getting our responses to you, however be assured that we will be working diligently on your problem.

I will be back as soon as possible with a fix !!

Howdy Virgil,

Your computer has multiple infections, including a backdoor. A backdoor gives intruders complete control of your computer, logs your keystrokes, steal personal information, etc.

This allows hackers to remotely control your computer, steal critical system information and Download and Execute files

I would counsel you to disconnect this PC from the Internet immediately. If you do any banking or other financial transactions on the PC or if it should contain any other sensitive information, please get to a known clean computer and change all passwords where applicable, and it would be wise to contact those same financial institutions to apprise them of your situation.

Though the Trojan has been identified and can be killed, because of it's backdoor functionality, your PC is very likely compromised and there is no way to be sure your computer can ever again be trusted. Many experts in the security community believe that once infected with this type of Trojan, the best course of action would be a reformat and reinstall of the OS. Please read these for more information:

How Do I Handle Possible Identify Theft, Internet Fraud and CC Fraud?

When Should I Format, How Should I Reinstall

We can attempt to clean this machine but i can't guarantee that it will be 100% secure afterwards.

Should you have any questions, please feel free to ask.

Please let us know what you have decided to do in your next post.

Thanks
Chuck
I was afraid of this, heh. In the past,I have reformatted my older computer, due to a virus…so I am familiar with what will happen and what will be lost. The infected computer as of now,is currently my laptop. It's main use is for school and programs for my classes. I do have one question though, since I am leaning towards reformatting. Is it possible to save some folders and music I have stored on there? I want to transfer them to a memory stick….but I'm wondering,if I transfer anything to a memory stick or like..another computer, wouldn't the virus transfer over? Also the network connection from the internet has been turned off for a few days now, since I noticed it made going on the internet extremely slow…this was the virus' doing. Again thanks for pointing this out,flashh4…it really sucks it turned out like this, but in a way,it is my fault on my end for not putting up protection for my laptop.
Howdy Virgil, yes if you would of had better protection this may not of happened or at least reduced your chances, i will give you a list before we close this topic with some good protection. The safest way to save is to burn the files/folders to a CD+R or DVD+R. (not an R/W type) If a flash must be used, there is still significant risk. You can provide some incomplete protection by: - Erasing any file named autorun.inf in the root of the flash drive after all the folders are on there. - When the flash is ever used to restore anything, plug it in and immediately right click the flash drive letter in My Computer and choose scan with the antivirus, which of course should be installed on any machine prior to using that flash. Hope this helps ! Is your decision to reformat ??? Thanks Chuck
Howdy Virgil, here is some programs that will help you from becoming infected so easily next time.

Here a couple of suggestions i would take.

1. The first thing after installing the OS is install the antivirus and connect to Microsoft updates to get the updates needed.
2. Be sure and have the Antivirus Installer available before re-installing the OS by downloading it on a clean machine and burning to a portable media like a CD.

Prevent a re-infection

[*]Hosts File

A Hosts file is like a phone book. You look up someone's name in the phone book before calling him/her. Similarly, your PC will look up the website's IP address before you can view the website.

Hosts file will replace your current Hosts file with another one containing well-known advertisement sites, spyware sites and other bad sites. This new Hosts file will protect you by re-directing these bad sites to 127.0.0.1.

Here are some Hosts files:

MVPS Hosts File
Bluetack's Hosts File
Bluetack's Host Manager
hpHosts

A tutorial about Hosts File can be found at Malware Removal.

Before downloading any anti-spyware programs, always check the Rogue/Suspect list of anti-spyware programs and Malwarebytes RogueNET. This will save you from a lot of trouble. If in doubt, don't ever download it.

Last i would recommend you get this program and run once a week !
Here are the instructions for running it.

Download and Run Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop.
  • Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
  • At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to:
    • Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    • Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • Then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform full scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad.
  • If you accidently close it, the log file is saved here and will be named like this: C:\Documents and Settings\\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\mbam-log-date (time).txt

Thanks and Good luck with the format !!!!
Chuck
Just wanted to let you know the reformatting went okay! Went ahead and installed an anti-virus program and the Malware bytes on the comp. I guess I'm okay for now,I'll take better care of the laptop, and with these links you suggested…I can have a head's up as to what I'm dealing with. Thanks so much for your help!
