Scan of urlbook below. Results say OK. This is a program that I know well, and have used since 2001. It basically manages a little database of urls and other data about websites visited and allows tags to be input for later searching. I haven't had an issue with it before. Do this now.
  • Click START then RUN
  • Now type Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK. Note the space between the X and the U, it needs to be there.

I'm out of ideas so I suggest you start a new topic here
I'll do the latest combofix run tomorrow. Does this /u uninstall combofix? I am beginning to think I might not overcome this. But, here are my ideas at this point. 1. The earlier run of Combofix reported that recovery console was not on the infected computer. Is this why I cannot restore to a prior date? When I had some virus problems earlier, I just restored to an earlier date, and the problems went away. 2. I keep thinking that the message I now get on each reboot that I must reboot again before updates are made must have something to do with this problem. Shortly before all this started, I discovered that my daughter has set something so that we received Microsoft updates automatically. Some thing I do not do - I always request notice, and then update manually. I think she might have stopped an automatic update that was in progress, and that might be why I now get this notice on reboot. If so, then perhaps there is some corrupted low level program, like the LSP, that was not compoetely updated. But, since I cannot now connect, I can't do a Microsoft update - unless I could figure out how to do it from the DOS prompt. Any ideas along this line? 3. Would installing FireFox be worthwhile to see if the problem is in IE6? I think that my version of the AOL browser is the one that was based on Internet Explorer, so its simultaneous current failue might be from the same problem. I do appreciate your efforts. Thanks.
1. Yes. Combofix creates a new clean restore point. 2. It could be that windows knows it needs to finish the updates but is unable to connect to the internet. 3. Give FF a try.
