All:

This apparently isn't my month for PC peace and tranquiliity.

I spent a week getting the machine I'm using now happy while trying to update from Win2K Pro to XP Pro. That's done now, and the machine seems to be working fine, although I lost all my browser favorites/bookmarks and email address bok in the process.

My other machine is a Dell Dimension 2100, and runs XP Home SP2. I decided to install SP3 on it, and upgrade my browser to Firefox 3.0. I did the browser upgrade with no trouble, then went ahead and tried to install SP3 through Windows Update–it informed me that it was available for download and installation. As far as I know, it was the automatic update notice that's part of XP.

I tried to download and install, and it wouldn't. Since then, the machine has really slowed up, and won't reboot unless I fully power it down. When I use either browser (IE 7.0 or Firefox 3.0), I don't always go to the URL I put on the browser's command line. I
For example, it won't go to Microsoft's support web page, or to What the Tech, for that matter, and when I do a search and select a website based on that search, I get redirected to another web page with additional selections not even remotely related to what I'm looking for. I've done a HJT scan, and here's the results. I'm also running an AVG virus scan at the moment.

Thanks in advance–Tom vonHatten

Hi tvhevh,

:welcome:

My name is Tomk. I would be glad to take a look at your log and help you with solving any malware problems. HijackThis logs can take a while to research, so please be patient and I'd be grateful if you would note the following:

  • I will be working on your Malware issues, this may or may not, solve other issues you have with your machine.
  • The fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for the issues on this machine.
  • Please continue to review my answers until I tell you your machine appears to be clear. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.
  • It's often worth reading through these instructions and printing them for ease of reference.
  • If you don't know or understand something, please don't hesitate to say or ask!! It's better to be sure and safe than sorry.
  • Please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.

This doesn't sound like a malware problem but lets take a look.

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
Download - ATF Cleaner
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.

(If you use FireFox or the Opera browser
To keep saved passwords, click No at the prompt.)

It's normal after running ATF cleaner that the PC will be slower to boot the first time or two.

Then

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop.

  • Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
  • At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location and post the results.
  • Note: If you receive a notice that some of the items couldn't be removed, that they have been added to the delete on reboot list, please reboot (shut down your computer then restart it).
Also "copy/paste" a new HijackThis log file into this thread.

Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.
Tomk:

Did as you instructed. After using Anti-Malware, I rebooted. The PC wouldn't get past the "Windows is shutting down" screen, so I manually shut it down and restarted after 5 minutes of waiting. Reboot seemed to go OK. Tried to get to this website on that machine using Firefox—no problems.

Here's the Anti-Malware log:

tvhevh,

Well you were so right. There were some real nasties hiding in there.

Please either print out these instructions for reference or copy/paste them in notepad and save to your desktop for access when in safe mode

Make all files and folders visible
Double-click My Computer.
Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
Click the View tab.
Clear "Hide file extensions for known file types."
Under the "Hidden files" folder, select "Show hidden files and folders."
Clear "Hide protected operating system files."
Click Apply, and then click OK.

We must disable certain protection programs that may interfere with our fix:
AVG
Please open the AVG Control Center program -> double-click on the "AVG Resident Shield" component (looks like this: [external image: Posted Image]) -> deselect the "Turn on AVG Resident Shield" checkmark and save the setting.
When you need to enable the AVG Resident Shield, ( I will let you know when) just open the AVG Control Center program -> double-click on the "AVG Resident Shield" component -> select the "Turn on AVG Resident Shield" checkmark and save the setting.

SPYBOT TEATIMER
  • Launch Spybot S&D, go to the Mode menu and make sure "Advanced Mode" is selected.
  • On the left hand side, click on Tools, then click on the Resident Icon in the list.
  • Uncheck the "Resident "TeaTimer" (Protection of overall system settings) active." box.
  • Click on the "System Startup" icon in the List
  • Uncheck the "TeaTimer" box and "OK" any prompts.
  • If Teatimer gives you a warning that changes were made, click the "Allow Change" box when prompted.
  • Exit Spybot S&D when done.
  • (When we are done, you can re-enable Teatimer using the same steps but this time place a check next to "Resident TeaTimer" and check the "TeaTimer" box in System Startup.]

  • Please open HijackThis and run Do a system scan only
  • Check the boxes next to ONLY the entries listed below(if present):
    • O4 - HKLM\..\RunServices: [MOSearch] C:\PROGRA~1\COMMON~1\System\MOSearch\Bin\mosearch.exe

  • Close all programs except for HijackThis.
  • Click on Fix checked
  • A box will pop up asking you if you wish to fix the selected items. Please choose YES.
  • Once it has fixed them, please exit/close HijackThis.

We Now Need To Boot Into Safemode

Restart your computer.
When the machine first starts again it will generally list some equipment that is installed in your machine,
amount of memory, hard drives installed etc (BOOT SCREEEN).
At this point you should gently tap the F8 key repeatedly until you are presented with a Options menu.
Select the option for Safe Mode using the arrow keys.
Then press enter on your keyboard to boot into Safe Mode.

Using Windows Explorer (Windows Key + E), locate the following folder and DELETE it:
C:\PROGRAM FILES\COMMON FILES\System\MOSearch <–This folder

Restart your computer normally.

Now lets double check that we didn't miss anything.

Please go to Kaspersky website and perform an online antivirus scan.

  • Read through the requirements and privacy statement and click on Accept button.
  • It will start downloading and installing the scanner and virus definitions. You will be prompted to install an application from Kaspersky. Click Run.
  • When the downloads have finished, click on Settings.
  • Make sure these boxes are checked (ticked). If they are not, please tick them and click on the Save button:
    • Spyware, Adware, Dialers, and other potentially dangerous programs
      Archives
      Mail databases
  • Click on My Computer under Scan.
  • Once the scan is complete, it will display the results. Click on View Scan Report.
  • You will see a list of infected items there. Click on Save Report As….
  • Save this report to a convenient place. Change the Files of type to Text file (.txt) before clicking on the Save button.
  • Please post this log in your next reply along with a new HijackThis log.

Please run ATF Cleaner per earlier instructions. Do this for every user profile (Rose and Grace also).

With this done, you should be clean

You need to create a new Clean restore point.

Update your AntiVirus Software - It is imperative that you update your Antivirus software at least once a week
(Even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.

Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer.
Without a firewall your computer is succeptible to being hacked and taken over.
I am very serious about this and see it happen almost every day with my clients.
Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly.

For a tutorial on Firewalls and a listing of some available ones see the link below:

Understanding and Using Firewalls

Keep Microsoft Windows Updated - This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. The easiest way to do this is to turn on Automatic Updates. Do this by:
  • From your desktop, right-click on My Computer,
  • click on Properties
  • Select the Automatic Updates tab
  • Click on Automatic
  • Click on Apply button
  • Click on OK to exit.
If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, until there are no more critical updates.

Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will add a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer
settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs.

A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

Using SpywareBlaster to protect your computer from Spyware and Malware

Download and install the free version of WinPatrol - This program protects your computer in a variety of ways and will work well with your existing security software.
Winpatrol

Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly.
Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.

Only run one Anti-Virus and Firewall program.

I would also suggest you read this:
So how did I get infected in the first place?
by Tony Klein

Please respond back that you understand the above and let me know if you have any continuing problems or questions. Otherwise I'll close this thread Resolved
Tomk:

I think we may be back to square one.

I ran ATF cleaner on all the user profiles on the PC: mine, My wife's, and Grace and Rose.

When I went to the three other user profiles, I got an note from Spyware Guard that the something was trying to change the browser default URL on IE. In each case, I told it not to allow the change.

I went back to my profile, and went to Firefox to log on to this site so I could cut and paste from your last note to get the clean restore point done. I couldn't. I got the Google screen I always get when I start Firefox, and even though I put in the URL directly, all I got was a "Done" comment in the lower LH corner of the browser window, but no WTT home page. I then tried another site, and got a message that "The connection to the server was reset while the page was loading" I typed the URL for Google on the command line, and got the same message. I tried to go to support.microsoft.com and got the same message.

I shut the browser down, and restarfted it, and got the google screen. I typed in What the tech in the search box and started the search. It came up with the website, and I clicked on the header to go to the website, and was sent to a junk search engine again.

Now I'm really confused. I didn't do anything (at least I don't think I did) and the problem is back. I never got to the clean restore point. ARRGGHHHHH!!!

I ran another HJT–here it is.

tvhevh,

Please download SDFix and save it to your Desktop.

You should print out these instructions, or copy them to a NotePad file for reading while in Safe Mode, because you will not be able to connect to the Internet to read from this site.

Double click on SDFix.exe. It should automatically extract a folder called SDFix to your system drive (usually C:\). Please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key repeatedly;
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu with options should appear;
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press "Enter".
  • Choose your usual user account.
  • Open the SDFix folder and double click on RunThis.bat to start the script.
  • Type Y and press Enter to begin the script.
  • It will start cleaning your PC and then prompt you to press any key to Reboot.
  • Press any key to restart the PC.
  • Your system will take longer than normal to restart as the fixtool will be removing files.
  • When the desktop loads the Fixtool will complete the removal and display Finished.
  • Press any key to end the script and to load your desktop icons.
  • A text file should automatically open, so please copy the contents and post them here. We also need you to post a new HijackThis log
I can't get it to boot in Safe Mode. I can select it, and it shows me all the drivers it's loading, then hangs up, and eventually shuts back down and starts the process over again. I have my XP Home disk–do I need it to reboot in Sate Mode? This is getting worse by the minute, it appears….I currently have the machine disconnected from my router and will not put it back on the home network I have until this is taken care of. –TvH
tvhevh,

Let's see if this tool will run.

A. Please download ComboFix by sUBs from HERE or HERE directly to your Desktop.

Note: If you already have ComboFix on your machine, please DELETE it from your desktop before downloading the newest version.

B. Now we must disable some of your security programs so that they do not interfere with the running of our tools:

C.Go to [external image: Posted Image] -> Run -> copy/paste the following single line command in the runbox & click OK

"%userprofile%\desktop\combofix.exe" /killall

[external image: Posted Image]
  • DO NOT USE your computer for any other purpose while ComboFix is running.
  • ComboFix may restart your computer, this is normal.
  • When finished, it will produce a log, ComboFix.txt.
  • Please post ComboFix.txt in your next reply along with a new HijackThis log.

Notes:

1. Do not mouse-click Combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
2. Do not "re-run" Combofix. If you have a problem, reply back for further instructions.
3. ComboFix may reset a number of Internet Explorer's settings, including making I-E the default browser.
4. Combofix prevents autorun of ALL CD, floppy and USB devices to assist with malware removal & increase security. If this is an issue or makes it difficult for you – please tell your helper.
5. CF disconnects your machine from the internet. The connection is automatically restored before CF completes its run. If CF runs into difficulty and terminates prematurely, the connection can be manually restored by restarting your machine.
I'd try all that, but now it won't boot up at all. I get a flash of a BSOD with a lot of words on it, starting with "Windows has encountered a problem"…and then the screen goes black and the startup cycle starts up again. The only thing I have as a boot disk is the XP Home CD. I guess I can use it to boot from one of the CD drives and get into Safe Mode, yes? –TvH
tvhevh,

I guess I can use it to boot from one of the CD drives and get into Safe Mode, yes?

Sorry. I honestly don't know. If you can get it to work, that would be great. Meanwhile, I'm trying to get some advice from some other helpers.
tvhevh,

Unfortunately, I haven't been able to glean any "magic" fix. So, lets try this:

Reboot and do the F8 tapping like you're going to try to enter safe mode. But, instead of selecting safe mode, select Last Known Good Configuration.

Please advise how it goes.
No luck. It just keeps cycling. I also tried using the XP Home CD to repair the system. That didn't help, either. It's still disconnected from the server. It's late, and I have to get up early for work. If there's any way I can get this taken care of without having to burn the hard drive down and reload XP on that machine, I'd be happy to know about it. I can check this from work to see if there are any ways to make that happen. I appreciate the help so far. I don't know why things turned to mush so fast tonight–at least I could learn how to prevent it from happening again if I did. –TvH
tvhevh,

The good news is that we have a theory to work with. Smart money is that your Zone Alarm didn't play well with your SP3 install. I've got a couple things for you to try? Please try in the order given.

Put your windows XP CD in and turn on your computer. When you are given the message press any key to boot from cd…, press a key and Windows Setup will start. At the first screen where you have to enter input, hit R to enter the Recovery Console. Then you will have to hit 1 to log into your windows installation and then just hit Enter for the Administrator password because it is normally blank unless you changed it. Once you are at the command prompt C:\WINDOWS I want you to type each of the following, hitting enter after each line:

  • attrib -s -h -r c:\boot.ini
  • del c:\boot.ini
  • bootcfg /rebuild
  • fixboot

Now type Exit and take your XP CD out. Your computer will reboot itself. Post back how things are going.

If this doesn't work, try this next:

Enter the Recovery Console per above instructions.

This time type:
sfc /scannow (note the space) (Let this run undisturbed until the window with the blue progress bar goes away)

SFC - Which stands for System File Checker, retrieves the correct version of the file from %Systemroot%\System32\Dllcache or the Windows installation source files, and then replaces the incorrect file.

If you want to see what was replaced, right-click My Computer and click on Manage. In the new window that appears, expand the Event Viewer (by clicking on the + symbol next to it) and then click on System.

If we can get you running, don't run SDFix or ComboFix as suggested earlier. I still believe your malware has been cleaned.
