I'm using Avast anti-virus, which found some malware, and I don't know how to get rid of the malware and the antivirusxp 08. nor do I know how I got all this to begin with. My son has some online games. Is that the problem? I have 20 infected files. Some of the names include: systest.sys rhchb8j0eve9.exe reboot.exe .tt5.tmp.vbs I haven't needed help in years, and I know you can show me what to do from my past hijacking experience. Thanks!

Stay with this topic until I give you the all clean post.

You might want to print these instructions out.

I suggest you do this:

Double-click My Computer.
Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
Click the View tab.
Clear "Hide file extensions for known file types."
Under the "Hidden files" folder, select "Show hidden files and folders."
Clear "Hide protected operating system files."
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Please do not delete anything unless instructed to.

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
Download - ATF Cleaner»
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.

(If you use FireFox or the Opera browser
To keep saved passwords, click No at the prompt.)

It's normal after running ATF cleaner that the PC will be slower to boot the first time or two.

Next:

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop.

  • Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
  • At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected .
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location and post the results.
  • Note: If you receive a notice that some of the items couldn't be removed, that they have been added to the delete on reboot list, please reboot.
Also "copy/paste" a new HijackThis log file into this thread.

Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.
I followed the steps and everything seems OK again!
Following are the Hijack this log (pre-treatment) and the mbam log (post-treatment): Please note that I overlooked the step of changing the view of the files before I did the malware removal, so I did it twice. The first time I had 38 infected files. The second time (log shown below) I had none.

Thanks! Is there anything else for me to do?

Drag CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe

Then post the results log and a new HijackThis log.

Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.
Thank you! Computer seems to be fine now, and was responding well with no indications of infection for several hours last night, too. My husband tells me that he opened a greeting card e-mail that seemed to start all this weird behavior. I saw that another member had a similar experience. I have now taken several steps based on taking the security test I found referenced elsewhere on this forum (jasons toolbox). I now have a lot of warning windows as I browse, but it's better than having to spend time on removal!

I don't know what the "…kridyncr" file is. I took the indicated steps. Many thanks for your help!

Here are the logs from Combofix and HT:

Lets get rid of it then. I'm sure it's bad. It might be empty but we'll see.

Open notepad and copy/paste the text in the Codebox below into it:

Folder::
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\kridyncr

Save this as Save this as "CFScript"

[external image: Posted Image]

Drag CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe

Then post the results log and a new HijackThis log.

Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.
Those steps are complete. Everything still seems fine. Thanks again! BTW when I started Itunes I got a window that the file sharing program in itunes had been disabled. I think I want to leave it that way since I don't share files over itunes. Programs like that make me vulnerable, right?

Here are the logs:

I think I want to leave it that way since I don't share files over itunes. Programs like that make me vulnerable, right?

Yes it does.

Close ALL windows and browsers except HijackThis and click "Fix checked"

Reboot and "copy/paste" a new HijackThis log file into this thread.

Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.
I did the system scan in HT on the three files. The new log is below. Everything is quite zippy–browser opens all windows really fast. I printed the instructions on the network printer. All is well. :wavey:

Good job

  • Click START then RUN
  • Now type Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK. Note the space between the X and the U, it needs to be there.

Here's my usual all clean post

    Log looks good :D

    • Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:
      • From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
      • Click once on the Security tab
      • Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
      • Click once on the Custom Level button.
      • Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
      • Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
      • Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
      • Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
      • Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
      • Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
      • When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
      • If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
    • Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.
  • Update your AntiVirus Software - It is imperative that you update your Antivirus software at least once a week
(Even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.

  • Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer.
Without a firewall your computer is succeptible to being hacked and taken over.
I am very serious about this and see it happen almost every day with my clients.
Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly.

For a tutorial on Firewalls and a listing of some available ones see the link below:
Note: I no longer suggest Zone Alarm

    Understanding and Using Firewalls

  • Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly.
This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer.
If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site
until there are no more critical updates.

  • MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well known ad sites and other bad sites. Basically, this prevents your computer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer, meaning it will be difficult to infect yourself in the future.
  • Winpatrol

  • Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly.
Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.

Only run one Anti-Virus and Firewall program.

I would also suggest you read this:
So how did I get infected in the first place?
by Tony Klein
Thank you, thank you! What a relief! I feel remarkably geeky and proud to have been able to follow your directions. I have taken all the steps except the firewall. That's next. I look forward to visiting the What the Tech forums NOT related to malware! :notworthy:
