Hi,

I ran a scan using Avira AntiVir and detected TR/Crypt.XPACK.Gen.

AntiVir allowed me to delete it, but I'm not sure it has been removed properly and completely. Here is the scan report:

Could you please take a look at my HJT log (shown below) and help me determine if my PC is clean now or should I take any further actions?

hi Gutts,

if your AV deleted it, then its gone.

The file could not be opened

some OS files are not accessible for scanning.
your hjt log looks ok but its your AV/anitmalware scans that you should rely on.

i dont see a anitmalware app in your log other than the built in windows defender. i will suggest you get another one. Malwarebytes is a good one. link and directions:

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop:

http://www.besttechie.net/tools/mbam-setup.exe

* Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
* Be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
* If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
* Once the program has loaded, select Perform FULL SCAN, then click Scan.
* When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
* Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
* When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location. The log can also be opened by going to Start > All Programs > Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware > Logs > log-date.txt
Thank you for the advise. I installed malwarebytes and ran it. It found one thing in the recycle bin… See below. Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware 1.26 Database version: 1105 Windows 6.0.6000 9/2/2008 9:32:03 PM mbam-log-2008-09-02 (21-32-03).txt Scan type: Full Scan (C:\|) Objects scanned: 121830 Time elapsed: 55 minute(s), 6 second(s) Memory Processes Infected: 0 Memory Modules Infected: 0 Registry Keys Infected: 0 Registry Values Infected: 0 Registry Data Items Infected: 0 Folders Infected: 0 Files Infected: 1 Memory Processes Infected: (No malicious items detected) Memory Modules Infected: (No malicious items detected) Registry Keys Infected: (No malicious items detected) Registry Values Infected: (No malicious items detected) Registry Data Items Infected: (No malicious items detected) Folders Infected: (No malicious items detected) Files Infected: C:\$Recycle.Bin\S-1-5-21-189576563-4245681946-42135167-1001\$R08N3WT.exe (Rogue.Installer) -> Quarantined and deleted successfully. Does this program (malwarebytes) act as a live protection against malware? I currently have antivir installed and was wondering if these two could run simultaneously without any problem? Thanks.
hi,

sorry for delay. i haven't had internet access and still dont since sept 1. iam "borrowing" a neighbors dsl wireless.
no the free version of malwarebytes does not offer a real time component that runs in the background. the paid version of malwarebytes does have it. empty your recycle bin

Antivir is a antivirus application, not a anti-malware. Some antivirus may provide more detections for malware than others but you really need a seperate antimalware app. only use one antivirus, but you can use more than one antimalware app.

you can use antivir and malwarebytes with no problems. using 2 antimalware apps that both have the real time component running may cause conflicts and chew up CPU cycles. you could disable the real time in one of them.

windows defender does have a real time protection component;

look here:

http://windowshelp.microsoft.com/Windows/e…d48a151033.mspx
http://www.vista4beginners.com/Windows-Defender

enable window defenders real time and also keep malwarebytes. keep both updated. malwarebytes you will have to update manually. always good to keep it updated even if you dont scan with it or tend to have any malware problems.

scanning with anti this or that– is really a function of your own computer habits. see top ten list below:

if all is good here are some tips for you:

My Top Ten List
The Short Version:

1) Keep your OS, (Windows) browser (IE, FireFox) and software up to date.
2) Know what you are installing to your computer. Alot of software can come with unwanted add-ons. Do you trust the source?
3) Install, keep updated: antivirus and two anti-malware applications. Scanning frequency is a function of your own computer habits.
4) Don't click on links or install files you receive via E-Mail, IM, Chat Rooms or Social Sites, no matter how tempting or legitimate the message may be.
5) Don't click on ads/pop ups or offers from websites to install software to your computer.
6) Don't click on offers to "scan" your computer.
7) Set up and use limited accounts rather than administrator accounts.
8) Install and understand the limitations of a third party software firewall.
9) Consider using an alternate browser and E-mail client.
10) If your habits include visiting or installing files from: warez, crack sites or p2p networks you are much more likely to encounter malicious code. Do you trust the source?

happy safe surfing
