[Resolved] greetingcard.org / antivirus xp 2008 / blue desktop

It's been ages since I've had to post on here, but today changed that. From my readings, I've found that the culprit must've been the email I received from greetingcard.org. I was cleaning out my bulk mail and it caught my eye so I opened it to make sure it wasn't junk or an acual ecard from my girlfriend. I saw that it was spam and deleted it… I honesty had no idea that simply opening a spam email could unleash this kinda mess on my computer (without clicking on the link inside). I thought these things only happened if you clicked on a link… shows what I know and I'm online all day.

I've done some research and read up on sysinfo.org.
I removed the following already:
svhost.exe
rhclbwj0e79t.exe

rhclbwj0e79t.exe was the name of the folder in my Program Files that contained the Antivirus XP 2008 files, so I knew that was it. I was finally able to remove that from my computer, but I'm still stuck with the blue desktop wallpaper that proudly displays that I'm an idiot: "Warning! Spyware detected on your computer! Install an antivirus or spyware remover to clean your computer." Naturally.

So I went out and bought ESET Smart Security (long over-due). I had been running on expired Norton.

These look fishy to me, but I don't know for sure:
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [nwiz] nwiz.exe /installquiet
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [lphcgbwj0e79t] C:\WINDOWS\system32\lphcgbwj0e79t.exe

Any help at all would be greatly apperciated. This is my work computer and I've already lost the past 7+ hours due to this… and now it's time for bed. :)

Here's my most recent HJT log:

Stay with this topic until I give you the all clean post.

You might want to print these instructions out.

Open Notepad, click on Format and uncheck Word Wrap.

I suggest you do this:

Double-click My Computer.
Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
Click the View tab.
Clear "Hide file extensions for known file types."
Under the "Hidden files" folder, select "Show hidden files and folders."
Clear "Hide protected operating system files."
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Please do not delete anything unless instructed to.

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
Download - ATF Cleaner»
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.

(If you use FireFox or the Opera browser
To keep saved passwords, click No at the prompt.)

It's normal after running ATF cleaner that the PC will be slower to boot the first time or two.

Next:

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop.

  • Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
  • At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected .
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location and post the results.
  • Note: If you receive a notice that some of the items couldn't be removed, that they have been added to the delete on reboot list, please reboot.
Also "copy/paste" a new HijackThis log file into this thread.

Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.
Thank you for your reply and help!
My computer had the normal slow start up after a reboot.
Oh! The Spyware wallpaper is gone! It's just a blue wallpaper now.

I've noticed two huge things though:
01. Yahoo Mail is missing the "Move To" feature which I am constantly using to move mail into folders. This just happened in the past hour or so.
02. This website, WTT, is missing all CSS and design… it's all basic HTML with only the What The Tech logo in the top right corner and basic text on a white background. No header. Just black and blue type… the emoticons… and the few words in red type.

Strange. I assume I'm not out of the woods just yet, eh?
Edit: I just realized that this is probably due to JavaScript being disabled (per ESET… still waiting on those guys).

Malwarebytes did give the "Certain items could not be removed!" warning and here is the name of that file:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\lphcgbwj0e79t.exe

Now for the logs…

Thanks again.

Not sure why Symantec/Norton showed up in these scans as I deleted/removed all Norton and Symantec files on Monday before I installed ESET.

BTW: the "Move To" option is back in my Yahoo Mail, but this website still looks like I'm back in 1995. :\

Computer seems to be running smoother, but the WTT site is still looking like 1995.
Has this happened before?

Can you explain this? I don't know what you're referring to.
These aren't bad but aren't needed at startup

Run hijackthis. Hit None of the above, Click Do a System Scan Only. Put a checkmark/tick in the box on the left side on these:

Close ALL windows and browsers except HijackThis and click "Fix checked"

You need to update SunJava.
Updating Java:
Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6.
  • Scroll down to where it says Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 7
The Java SE Runtime Environment (JRE) allows end-users to run Java applications.
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • Check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation with or without Multi-language and save to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name. It should have the [external image: Posted Image] icon next to it.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on 6-windowsi586-p.exe to install the newest version.
Once installed you can test to see that it is in fact installed

QUOTE Computer seems to be running smoother, but the WTT site is still looking like 1995. Has this happened before? Can you explain this? I don't know what you're referring to. I meant that the site/forum looks totally different than it did even a few hours ago. It looks like it's all text and no elements of the forum template. That's what I was referring to when I asked, has this happened before? I can post a screen shot if you'd like. On to the HJT… thanks for sticking with me for so long.
Good job

  • Click START then RUN
  • Now type Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK. Note the space between the X and the U, it needs to be there.

Here's my usual all clean post

    Log looks good :D

    • Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:
      • From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
      • Click once on the Security tab
      • Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
      • Click once on the Custom Level button.
      • Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
      • Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
      • Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
      • Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
      • Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
      • Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
      • When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
      • If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
    • Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.
  • Update your AntiVirus Software - It is imperative that you update your Antivirus software at least once a week
(Even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.

  • Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer.
Without a firewall your computer is succeptible to being hacked and taken over.
I am very serious about this and see it happen almost every day with my clients.
Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly.

For a tutorial on Firewalls and a listing of some available ones see the link below:
Note: I no longer suggest Zone Alarm

    Understanding and Using Firewalls

  • Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly.
This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer.
If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site
until there are no more critical updates.

  • MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well known ad sites and other bad sites. Basically, this prevents your computer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer, meaning it will be difficult to infect yourself in the future.
  • Winpatrol

  • Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly.
Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.

Only run one Anti-Virus and Firewall program.

I would also suggest you read this:
So how did I get infected in the first place?
by Tony Klein
I don't have a file "6-windowsi586-p.exe" on my desktop or anywhere. I DO have a java file named "jre-6u7-windows-i586-p-iftw.exe" on my desktop. I figured I'd double check before I double-click it, but I assume yes… but I'll still wait. I haven't said thanks in a post or two… so thanks again! :)
