File is called xxyywQix.dll and after I fix it and reboot, it's still there. Here is my most recent malwarebytes scan. This one doesn't have it on there for some reason though, but probably will if I restart and run it again.

Also, I was previously having problems getting onto certain sites like this one. It would say page cannot be found. Right now, I can't get into hotmail - getting a blank page with the little yellow warning triangle at the bottom left.

Hi ahelaumakani, and Welcome to WhatTheTech

My name is Tomk. I would be glad to take a look at your log and help you with solving any malware problems. HijackThis logs can take a while to research, so please be patient and I'd be grateful if you would note the following:

  • I will working be on your Malware issues, this may or may not, solve other issues you have with your machine.
  • The fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for the issues on this machine.
  • Please continue to review my answers until I tell you your machine appears to be clear. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.
  • It's often worth reading through these instructions and printing them for ease of reference.
  • If you don't know or understand something, please don't hesitate to say or ask!! It's better to be sure and safe than sorry.
  • Please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.

We have noticed that most people seeking help from us are coming with infections contracted from the use of P2P programs.

Because of this, we felt we needed to change our policy on the use of P2P file sharing programs.

You may have the following P-2-P program(s) installed
bittorrent

This is how you uninstall it/them:

  • Click Start
  • Go to Control Panel
  • Go to Add/Remove Programs
  • Find and click Remove and P-2-P program:

It is possible that you have finally killed the infection. I don't see anything in your log. However, lets dig a little deeper to be sure.

A. Please download ComboFix by sUBs from HERE or HERE directly to your Desktop.

Note: If you already have ComboFix on your machine, please DELETE it from your desktop before downloading the newest version.

B. Now we must disable some of your security programs so that they do not interfere with the running of our tools:

AVG
Please open the AVG Control Center program -> double-click on the "AVG Resident Shield" component (looks like this: [external image: Posted Image]) -> deselect the "Turn on AVG Resident Shield" checkmark and save the setting.
When you need to enable the AVG Resident Shield, ( I will let you know when) just open the AVG Control Center program -> double-click on the "AVG Resident Shield" component -> select the "Turn on AVG Resident Shield" checkmark and save the setting.

SPYBOT TEATIMER
  • Launch Spybot S&D, go to the Mode menu and make sure "Advanced Mode" is selected.
  • On the left hand side, click on Tools, then click on the Resident Icon in the list.
  • Uncheck the "Resident "TeaTimer" (Protection of overall system settings) active." box.
  • Click on the "System Startup" icon in the List
  • Uncheck the "TeaTimer" box and "OK" any prompts.
  • If Teatimer gives you a warning that changes were made, click the "Allow Change" box when prompted.
  • Exit Spybot S&D when done.
  • (When we are done, you can re-enable Teatimer using the same steps but this time place a check next to "Resident TeaTimer" and check the "TeaTimer" box in System Startup.]

SPYWARE DOCTOR
  • Click the Spyware Doctor icon in the System Tray.
  • Click Settings.
  • Click Startup Settings under Pick a Category.
  • Uncheck "Run at Windows startup".
  • Click Apply and Exit Spyware Doctor.
  • From within Spyware Doctor, click the "OnGuard" button on the left side.
  • Uncheck "Activate OnGuard".
  • (When we are done, you can reenable Spyware Doctor)

C.Go to [external image: Posted Image] -> Run -> copy/paste the following single line command in the runbox & click OK

"%userprofile%\desktop\combofix.exe" /killall

[external image: Posted Image]
  • DO NOT USE your computer for any other purpose while ComboFix is running.
  • ComboFix may restart your computer, this is normal.
  • When finished, it will produce a log, ComboFix.txt.
  • Please post ComboFix.txt in your next reply along with a new HijackThis log.

Notes:

1. Do not mouse-click Combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
2. Do not "re-run" Combofix. If you have a problem, reply back for further instructions.
3. ComboFix may reset a number of Internet Explorer's settings, including making I-E the default browser.
4. Combofix prevents autorun of ALL CD, floppy and USB devices to assist with malware removal & increase security. If this is an issue or makes it difficult for you – please tell your helper.
5. CF disconnects your machine from the internet. The connection is automatically restored before CF completes its run. If CF runs into difficulty and terminates prematurely, the connection can be manually restored by restarting your machine.
Couldn't find bit torrent in Add/remove programs. I had it at one point but never used it and thought I deleted it. When combofix started, Spybot SD popped up and said it was going to run a scan so I closed that out. Thought I had followed the instructions on disabling it though. Here are combofix and HJT logs.

ahelaumakani,

We have noticed that most people seeking help from us are coming with infections contracted from the use of P2P programs.

Because of this, we felt we needed to change our policy on the use of P2P file sharing programs.

You have the following P-2-P program(s) installed
LimeWire

This is how you uninstall it/them:

  • Click Start
  • Go to Control Panel
  • Go to Add/Remove Programs
  • Find and click Remove for the following (if present):

LimeWire

Disable your protection programs as we did before.

  • Please open HijackThis and run Do a system scan only
  • Check the boxes next to ONLY the entries listed below(if present):
  • Close all programs except for HijackThis.
  • Click on Fix checked
  • A box will pop up asking you if you wish to fix the selected items. Please choose YES.
  • Once it has fixed them, please exit/close HijackThis.

Next

COMBOFIX-Script

  • Please open Notepad (Start -> Run -> type notepad in the Open field -> OK) and copy and paste the text present inside the code box below:

    KILLALL::

    File::
    F:\mri.exe

    Folder::
    C:\Program Files\DNA

    Registry::
    [-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\explorer\mountpoints2\F]
  • Save this as CFScript.txt and change the "Save as type" to "All Files" and place it on your desktop.

    [external image: Posted Image]
  • Very Important! Temporarily disable your anti-virus, script blocking and any anti-malware real-time protection before following the steps below. They can interfere with ComboFix or remove some of its embedded files which may cause "unpredictable results".
  • Referring to the screenshot above, drag CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe.
  • ComboFix will now run a scan on your system. It may reboot your system when it finishes. This is normal.
  • When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Copy and paste the contents of the log in your next reply.
CAUTION: Do not mouse-click ComboFix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

Then

Please go to Kaspersky website and perform an online antivirus scan.

  • Read through the requirements and privacy statement and click on Accept button.
  • It will start downloading and installing the scanner and virus definitions. You will be prompted to install an application from Kaspersky. Click Run.
  • When the downloads have finished, click on Settings.
  • Make sure these boxes are checked (ticked). If they are not, please tick them and click on the Save button:
    • Spyware, Adware, Dialers, and other potentially dangerous programs
      Archives
      Mail databases
  • Click on My Computer under Scan.
  • Once the scan is complete, it will display the results. Click on View Scan Report.
  • You will see a list of infected items there. Click on Save Report As….
  • Save this report to a convenient place. Change the Files of type to Text file (.txt) before clicking on the Save button.
  • Please post this log in your next reply.

In your next reply please provide:
  • ComboFix.txt
  • Kaspersky report
  • New HijackThis log taken after everything else completed
Hit a snag when I tried to run Kaspersky. It says I need to have Java version 1.5 or later. But according to the Java site:

Verified Java Version
Congratulations!
You have the recommended Java installed (Version 6 Update 7).

So I don't know what's wrong. But here's the combofix and HJT logs.

ahelaumakani,

Please try this older version of Kaspersky. It uses activeX instead of Java so you must access with Internet Explorer.

Please do an online scan with Kaspersky Online Scanner

Note: You must be using Internet Explorer as your browser as it will be necessary to install an Active X component to your computer.

Important If you have previously used Kaspersky Online Scanner (before 8th Aug 2006), you will have to uninstall the old version using Add/Remove Programs in Control Panel before you can use the new version.

Click on Kaspersky Online Scanner

You will be promted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.

  • The program will launch and then start to download the latest definition files.
  • Once the scanner is installed and the definitions downloaded, click Next.
  • Now click on Scan Settings.
  • In the scan settings make sure that the following are selected:
    • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
      • Extended (If available otherwise Standard)
    • Scan Options:
      • Scan Archives
      • Scan Mail Bases
  • Click OK.
  • Now under select a target to scan select My Computer.
  • The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run. Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
  • Now click on the Save as Text button:
  • Save the file to your desktop.
  • Copy and paste that information in your next post.

Note: The Kaspersky online scanner is not yet fully compatible with IE7. You may get returned to a window without the Accept/Decline buttons after allowing the ActiveX control. The buttons are there - you just can't see them! Click on the zoom button (bottom, right of the window) and change it from 100% to 75%. You should now see the buttons. Reset to 100% once the license has been accepted.
Sorry, I'm still getting that message. I tried closing my browser, opening a new one, and restarting the computer. It doesn't say anything about activex. Maybe something with my internet settings?

ahelaumakani,

Sorry about that. Older version apparently no longer available.

Please run the following scan: Eset Online Scanner

  • Place a check mark in the box YES, I accept the Terms Of Use
  • Click the Start button.
  • Now click the Install button.
  • Click Start. The scanner engine will initialize and update.
  • Do Not place a check mark in the box beside Remove found threats.
  • Click the Scan button. The scan will now run, please be patient.
  • When the scan finishes click the Details tab.
  • Copy and paste the contents of the C:\ProgramFiles\EsetOnlineScanner\log.txt into your next reply.

Meanwhile, I'll see if I can figure out why Kaspersky isn't running.

Time for some housekeeping
  • Click START then RUN
  • Now type Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK

Update your AntiVirus Software - It is imperative that you update your Antivirus software at least once a week
(Even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.

Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer.
Without a firewall your computer is succeptible to being hacked and taken over.
I am very serious about this and see it happen almost every day with my clients.
Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly.

For a tutorial on Firewalls and a listing of some available ones see the link below:

Understanding and Using Firewalls

Keep Microsoft Windows Updated - This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. The easiest way to do this is to turn on Automatic Updates. Do this by:
  • From your desktop, right-click on My Computer,
  • click on Properties
  • Select the Automatic Updates tab
  • Click on Automatic
  • Click on Apply button
  • Click on OK to exit.
If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, until there are no more critical updates.

Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will add a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer
settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs.

A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

Using SpywareBlaster to protect your computer from Spyware and Malware

Download and install the free version of WinPatrol - This program protects your computer in a variety of ways and will work well with your existing security software.
Winpatrol

Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly.
Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.

Only run one Anti-Virus and Firewall program.

I would also suggest you read this:
So how did I get infected in the first place?
by Tony Klein

Please respond back that you understand the above and let me know if you have any questions. Otherwise, this thread will be closed Resolved.
After some major problems a month or so ago, my boyfriend (it's his computer) took the computer to Geek Squad @ Best Buy. Apparently they said something about having too many security programs on the computer. Now, it wasn't like I was trying to run 4 anti-virus programs at once (although I may have had 2 - see below) but I read this site and similar ones a lot so I had amassed quite an arsenal of maintenance tools (for example: Spywareblaster, ATF cleaner, MBAM, etc.) and was utilizing Zone Alarm as well.

Well, my bf took that to mean he should disable everything including ZoneAlarm and only utilize a paid version of Spyware Doctor w/ antivirus protection. I'm afraid I'll need to convince him that this alone does not offer complete protection (although I'm sure Geek Squad would love to have him think so…) so I have some questions:

If I'm using Spyware Dr. should I uninstall AVG? I know you're not supposed to run 2 at the same time but I guess I thought I could just scan withAVG periodically to catch anything SD missed. However, it looks like some AVG processes (Watchdog service, resident shield service, email scanner) are running even when AVG appears to be off.

Do you know anything about security issues w/ MMORPGs? I don't play but the problem seemed to start after the bf played a particularly long session of WoW.

Absolutely no P2P programs? :( I really like Limewire and thought I was being "safe" by scanning any downloaded files before I opened them.

Also, the clock is still in military time - it didn't change back when I deleted combofix.
ahelaumakani,

If you want your clock in 12 hr vs. 24 hour format:

  • Click on Start
  • Click on Control Panel
  • Click on Regional and language options
  • Click on customize
  • Click on Time tab
  • Click on arrow to the right of time format
  • Select h:mm:ss tt
  • OK your way out

If I'm using Spyware Dr. should I uninstall AVG?

Yes. Your logic of running AVG periodically is sound, but the resident component can cause you problems. I would recommend that you use MBAM for "checkups". And/or periodically run an online scan like Trend Micro™ HouseCall

Do you know anything about security issues w/ MMORPGs?

Not really. What I have seen however, is that alot of the gamers we see here have downloaded hacks, cracks, and cheats to help them and they turn out to be full of malware.

Absolutely no P2P programs?

That is the current board policy. What you do with your computer is up to you. Using P2P increases your risk of malware. It doesn't guarantee it.

Anything more I can help you with?
I'm still having problems but now I think they may be hardware-related. The computer crashed yesterday during WoW and this is what the task manager looks like when all I'm doing is typing this. [external image: Posted Image]

At one point, a repair place said that the hard drive is about to go out (desktop wouldn't load and computer had been failing SMART test) but then Geek Squad said they couldn't tell because the tests were coming out fine. They told me to back up the drive and kinda suggested I take a wait-and-see approach which makes me pretty aprehensive.

Could this be related to the original problem or should I start a thread in the hardware forum?
ahelaumakani,

Your questions are outside my knowledge.

should I start a thread in the hardware forum?

I think that is a good idea. If you do that, please provide a link to this topic. There could be something in one of our scans that might help the Tech Team.

I'm going to call this thread resolved.
Since this issue appears to be resolved … this Topic has been closed. Glad we could be of assistance. If you're the topic starter, and need this topic reopened, please contact a staff member with the address of the thread. Everyone else please begin a New Topic.
