Please help. My computer starts up normally up until Windows loads. After the Windows loading screen, my monitor stops working, even though i hear Windows starting up through my speakers. The only way i can get my monitor to work is through Safe Mode, or if i disable my Display Adapter using Device Manager. I already updated my video card and motherboard. And btw, my computer's sound sometimes randomly stops working, don't know if that's related. this is my computer: Windows XP Professional SP2 Pentium 4 CPU 2.8 GHz Motherboard: Intel D865GBF Video Card: NVIDIA GeForce 7600 GS - AGP Please help and Thanks!
Hello,
Your screen resolution may be set too high.
In safe mode,
  • right click the desktop,
  • Select properties,
  • Select display settings,
  • reduce the resolution.
If this does not work, in safe mode with networking down load the latest driver for your video card. (from nvidia)
i have already tried lowering my resolution, i even set up my Visual Effects to "adjust for best performance". and i've already downloaded the latest drivers for both video card and motherboard. computer is almost 4 years old, and video card is only a little over a year old btw. and this problem started insantly- my computer suddenly froze one day, so i restarted it, and for almost 2 months i've had this problem.
lets look at what we have,
Safe mode loads only the drivers and programs required to run at the most basic level.
You have display in safe mode.
You do not have display in normal user mode.
So something is loading that causes you to not have video.
User settings are not loaded in safe mode.
Only the basic video driver is loaded in safe mode.
One of these is causing the issue.
The only other possibility is that you have too much video acceleration.
Here are instructions for reducing the video acceleration.
When you boot in to safe mode are you using the administrator account, or the account that you normally would use? You must use the same account to change user settings. If this where a conflict with your video driver you would get a stop code (blue screen). So again it is the user settings, or a driver issue. Are you sure that the drivers are for XP and not Vista?
i am using the same account when making changes, and all the drivers all correct. could this be a problem with the AGP slot of my motherboard? and should i just try reformatting my hard drive and maybe resetting my BIOS? or is this just hardware failure?
If you have video in safe mode it is not a hardware issue. If your graphics card was not working correctly you would have no display in safe mode. Why would you reset your bios for a software issue? Reformating is a last ditch effert. If you decide to at least go in to safe mode and save your data. Again, you state that you have video in safe mode so there is an issue with user settings, or the driver. Where are you updating your driver from? It should come from nvidia, not Microsoft. You can try taking the card out and reseating it (unless it is an onboard card).
i get my drivers from nvidia. and reformatting is not a big deal for me, i would just like to know if i have a high chance of fixing the problem by reformatting my hard drive. and i will try to remove and insert my videocard now.
SUCCESS!! all i did was remove and re-insert my video card… along with my PCI firewire card and my RAM (i don't know if that helped though). now everything works fine! Thanks for all your time and help! P.S. so what was the problem anyways that replugging the video card fixed?
ummm, it happened again! and now not even re-inserting the video card helps! now what are my chances of fixing the problem if i reformat my hard drive?
