Talullah,

  • Please open HijackThis and run Do a system scan only
  • Check the boxes next to ONLY the entries listed below(if present):

  • Close all programs except for HijackThis.
  • Click on Fix checked
  • A box will pop up asking you if you wish to fix the selected items. Please choose YES.
  • Once it has fixed them, please exit/close HijackThis.

With that done, you look clean.

Now turn your external hard drive on. Then start Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and check for updates.
Then select "perform full scan"
In the next window make sure everything is selected (all boxes are checked) and scan.
You might want to go ahead and have dinner because it could take a couple of hours.
Then reply back with the results and a new HijackThis log.
Tomk, That's great news! Thanks so much for all your help. I've completed the Hijackthis instructions. I have one question though, before I start the next step. Should I disable ESET while I run the Malwarebytes scan?
It appears the external drive was infected as well. My computer is still running the same though. No problems to speak of.

Talullah,

Please either print out these instructions for reference or copy/paste them in notepad and save to your desktop for access when in safe mode

Make all files and folders visible
Double-click My Computer.
Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
Click the View tab.
Clear "Hide file extensions for known file types."
Under the "Hidden files" folder, select "Show hidden files and folders."
Clear "Hide protected operating system files."
Click Apply, and then click OK.

We Now Need To Boot Into Safemode

Restart your computer.
When the machine first starts again it will generally list some equipment that is installed in your machine,
amount of memory, hard drives installed etc (BOOT SCREEEN).
At this point you should gently tap the F8 key repeatedly until you are presented with a Options menu.
Select the option for Safe Mode using the arrow keys.
Then press enter on your keyboard to boot into Safe Mode.

Using Windows Explorer (Windows Key + E), locate the following files/folders, and DELETE them (if still present):
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\sr\ZDT1v849.exe <–This file

Restart your computer normally.

Download Dr.Web CureIt to the desktop:
ftp://ftp.drweb.com/pub/drweb/cureit/drweb-cureit.exe

  • Doubleclick the drweb-cureit.exe file and Allow to run the express scan
  • This will scan the files currently running in memory and when something is found, click the yes button when it asks you if you want to cure it. This is only a short scan.
  • Once the short scan has finished, mark the drives that you want to scan.
  • Select all drives. A red dot shows which drives have been chosen.
  • Click the green arrow at the right, and the scan will start.
  • Click Yes to all if it asks if you want to cure/move the file.
  • When the scan has finished, look if you can click next icon next to the files found:[external image: Posted Image]
  • If so, click it and then click the next icon right below and select Move incurable as you'll see in next image:
    [external image: Posted Image]
This will move it to the %userprofile%\DoctorWeb\quarantaine-folder if it can't be cured. (this in case if we need samples)
  • After selecting, in the Dr.Web CureIt menu on top, click file and choose save report list
  • Save the report to your desktop. The report will be called DrWeb.csv
  • Close Dr.Web Cureit.
  • Reboot your computer!! Because it could be possible that files in use will be moved/deleted during reboot.
  • After reboot, post the contents of the log from Dr.Web you saved previously in your next reply.
Tomk, My computer is still running fine. Talullah,

That should do it. :woot:

Time for some housekeeping
  • Click START then RUN
  • Now type Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK
  • Note the space between the X and the U, it needs to be there.
  • [external image: Posted Image]
The above procedure will:
  • Delete the following:
    • ComboFix and its associated files and folders.
    • VundoFix backups, if present
    • The C:\Deckard folder, if present
    • The C:_OtMoveIt folder, if present
  • Reset the clock settings.
  • Hide file extensions, if required.
  • Hide System/Hidden files, if required.
  • Reset System Restore.

Update your AntiVirus Software - It is imperative that you update your Antivirus software at least once a week
(Even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.

Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer.
Without a firewall your computer is succeptible to being hacked and taken over.
I am very serious about this and see it happen almost every day with my clients.
Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly.

For a tutorial on Firewalls and a listing of some available ones see the link below:

Understanding and Using Firewalls

Keep Microsoft Windows Updated - This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. The easiest way to do this is to turn on Automatic Updates. Do this by:
  • From your desktop, right-click on My Computer,
  • click on Properties
  • Select the Automatic Updates tab
  • Click on Automatic
  • Click on Apply button
  • Click on OK to exit.
If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, until there are no more critical updates.

Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will add a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer
settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs.

A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

Using SpywareBlaster to protect your computer from Spyware and Malware

Download and install the free version of WinPatrol - This program protects your computer in a variety of ways and will work well with your existing security software.
Winpatrol

Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly.
Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.

Only run one Anti-Virus and Firewall program.

I would also suggest you read this:
So how did I get infected in the first place?
by Tony Klein

Please respond back that you understand the above and let me know if you have any questions. Otherwise, this thread will be closed Resolved.
:notworthy: I can't thank you enough! I will read through all of your advise, I have alot to learn. But the house cleaning isn't done. I'm not able to run the ComboFix /u command. Windows cannot find the file. Was it deleted in one of the other steps? Also, when I start up my computer I get an error message that Windows cannot find this file –> RRMedic.exe.vir Do I need Road Runner Medic? It asks me if I want to find the file online.
Talullah,

Does Combofix still appear on your desktop? It may have been taken out by Dr.Web CureIt. If it doesn't appear, please redownload. Don't run any scan, just start>run> and past Combofix /u per earlier directions. This will make sure everything is reset correctly.

Do I need Road Runner Medic?

You not only don't need it, you don't want it. See here for information.

Please post one more Hijack this log. I may need you to fix an entry so you quit getting that message.
No, it wasn't on my desktop. I redownloaded and ran the command. It uninstalled but did not reset my clock. How do I check to see if it did the other tasks?
