Hi, I was infected with the winself trojan. (I think that's what it was called) It looks like I managed to get rid of it, but my pc is still slower than, well, something very slow. I'm not sure if this is because I'm still infected, or if there's another issue. I may have gone a little overboard on the AV / protection programs, so that might be a factor. I'm posting a question in the software section forum about that, too.

Here's my HJT log…

Hello

Before we begin, you should save these instructions in Notepad to your desktop, or print them, for easy reference. Much of our fix will be done in Safe mode, and you will be unable to access this thread at that time. If you have questions at any point, or are unsure of the instructions, feel free to post here and ask for clarification before proceeding.

Please download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri) to your Desktop.

Next, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu with options should appear;
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press "Enter".
  • Choose your usual account.
Once in Safe Mode, double-click on SmitfraudFix.exe
Select option #2 - Clean by typing 2 and press "Enter" to delete infected files.

You will be prompted : "Registry cleaning - Do you want to clean the registry ?"; answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter" in order to remove the Desktop background and clean registry keys associated with the infection.

The tool will now check if wininet.dll is infected. You may be prompted to replace the infected file (if found); answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter".

The tool may need to restart your computer to finish the cleaning process; if it doesn't, please restart it into Normal Windows.
A text file will appear onscreen, with results from the cleaning process; please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.
The report can also be found at the root of the system drive, usually at C:\rapport.txt

Warning : running option #2 on a non infected computer will remove your Desktop background.

Please download Deckard's System Scanner (DSS) and save it to your Desktop.
  • Close all other windows before proceeding.
  • Double-click on dss.exe and follow the prompts.
  • If your anti-virus or firewall complains, please allow this script to run as it is not malicious.
  • When it has finished, dss will open two Notepads main.txt and extra.txt – please copy (CTRL+A and then CTRL+C) and paste (CTRL+V) the contents of main.txt and extra.txt in your next reply.
Ok, here's the main.txt, extra.txt, and below those, the Smitfraud report…

Please visit this web page for instructions for downloading and running ComboFix

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix

This includes installing the Windows XP Recovery Console in case you have not installed it yet.

For more information on the Windows XP Recovery Console read http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314058.

Once you install the Recovery Console, when you reboot your computer, you'll see the option for the Recovery Console now as well. Don't select Recovery Console as we don't need it. By default, your main OS is selected there. The screen stays for 2 seconds and then it proceeds to load Windows. That is normal.

Post the log from ComboFix when you've accomplished that, along with a new HijackThis log.
I uninstalled Norton, using the uninstaller tool on their website, and deleted the items you said.
As requested, combofix and HJT logs…

I notice in the reply I just posted, it says I do not have the recovery console installed. I thought i had followed the installation instructions word for word. Should I install it now, or does it not matter now?
No need

1. Close any open browsers.

2. Open notepad and copy/paste the text in the quotebox below into it:

Save this as CFScript.txt, in the same location as ComboFix.exe

[external image: Posted Image]

Refering to the picture above, drag CFScript into ComboFix.exe

When finished, it shall produce a log for you at "C:\ComboFix.txt"

Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall

Also post a new HijackThis log
Here are the logs - this is probably a dumb question, but IE has now become my default browser (from Firefox). Is that because it has gone back to some default setting from all the cleaning?

    Scan Mail Bases
  • Click OK
  • Now under select a target to scan:Select My Computer
  • This will program will start and scan your system.
  • The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
  • Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
    • Now click on the Save as Text button:
  • Save the file to your desktop.
  • Copy and paste that information in your next post.
Towards the end of the scan, I got a resident shield alert from AVG, showing 8 viruses - they were all in C:\ System Volume Information. The same ones show up in the Kaspersky scan report. I didn't remove them, but I've left the alert page up, just in case. (I'm thinking you're going to have me remove them by different means, or explain them to me?) I also didn't remove anything using Kaspersky - I'm assuming (again) that you'll guide me on the next step. I've completely stopped thinking for myself by this point, as you can see :-) ——————————————————————————- KASPERSKY ONLINE SCANNER REPORT 2008-08-03 20:30 Operating System: Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition, Service Pack 2 (Build 2600) Kaspersky Online Scanner version: 5.0.98.0 Kaspersky Anti-Virus database last update: 3/08/2008 Kaspersky Anti-Virus database records: 1048748 ——————————————————————————- Scan Settings: Scan using the following antivirus database: extended Scan Archives: true Scan Mail Bases: true Scan Target - Below I have included a number of recommendations for how to protect your computer against malware infections.

* Keep Windows updated by regularly checking their website at :
http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/
This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer.

* To reduce re-infection for malware in the future, I strongly recommend installing these free programs:

SpywareBlaster protects against bad ActiveX
IE-SPYAD puts over 5000 sites in your restricted zone so you'll be protected when you visit innocent-looking sites that aren't actually innocent at all
Have a look at this tutorial for IE-Spyad here

* SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts. Make sure you are only running one real-time anti-spyware protection program or there will be a conflict.

Make Internet Explorer more secure
  • Click Start > Run
  • Type Inetcpl.cpl & click OK
  • Click on the Security tab
  • Click Reset all zones to default level
  • Make sure the Internet Zone is selected & Click Custom level
  • In the ActiveX section, set the first two options ("Download signed and unsigned ActiveX controls) to "Prompt", and ("Initialize and Script ActiveX controls not marked as safe") to "Disable".
  • Next Click OK, then Apply button and then OK to exit the Internet Properties page.

* MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well known ad sites and other bad sites. Basically, this prevents your computer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer, meaning it will be difficult to infect yourself in the future.

* Please consider using an alternate browser. Mozilla's Firefox browser is fantastic; it is much more
secure than Internet Explorer, immune to almost all known browser hijackers, and also has the best built-in pop up
blocker (as an added benefit!) that I have ever seen. If you are interested, Firefox may be downloaded from
Here

* Take a good look at the following suggestions for malware prevention by reading Tony Klein’s article 'How Did I Get Infected In The First Place'
Here

Thank you for your patience, and performing all of the procedures requested.
Thank you so much for all the help. Of course, I do have one more question :-) …..regarding the programs you recommend - I'm currently running AVG free, and Comodo firewall. I also have Spybot installed. Do some of the programs you list overlap with the above, and if so, which should I get rid of to use the ones you recommend?
I'd just like to thank you again. I really appreciate all the help. It's so refreshing to find people that are doing good things for others (and for free!) Keep up the good work. Cheers, Davie
