Taskbar and icons vanished

When I first turn on the computer, the task bar and icons on the desktop go away. Then the task bar comes back on 2 or 3 times, then goes away completely and I can't click on anything. CTRL+ALT+DEL doesn't work. Sometimes 2 little minimized windows show up on the bottom of the screen that say "C:\Windows" and that's all I can make out because they constantly blink or flicker. I can't close them or maximize them. Nothing works on them. I can't do anything but shut off Windows.

The only way I can get anything to come up is if I double-click on something like Opera or Internet Explorer before the icons go away.

I decided to look through some other people's issues and see what people suggested they do, so I took the liberty to download and run ATF Cleaner and also Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and followed the instructions posted to run and remove everything it found.

Thank you for taking the time to help me. I have no idea what to do.
Hello and Welcome to the forum.

Stay with this topic until I give you the all clean post.

You might want to print these instructions out.

I suggest you do this:

Double-click My Computer.
Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
Click the View tab.
Clear "Hide file extensions for known file types."
Under the "Hidden files" folder, select "Show hidden files and folders."
Clear "Hide protected operating system files."
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Please do not delete anything unless instructed to.

Next:

Download ComboFix from Here or Here to your Desktop.
**Note: In the event you already have Combofix, please delete it from your desktop and download this new version . It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop**
——————————————————————–
  • Close any open browsers and make sure you are disconnected from the net. Unplug the cable if need be before running combofix.
  • WARNING: IF you have not already done so Combofix will disconnect your machine from the Internet when it starts
  • Please do not re-connect your machine back to the Internet until Combofix has completely finished.
——————————————————————–

Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
When finished, it will produce a report for you.
Please post the "C:\ComboFix.txt" along with a new HijackThis log for further review

****Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall or freeze ****

*If there is no internet connection when Combofix has completely finished then restart your computer to restore back the connections.

Give it atleast 20-30 minutes to finish
Hello! Thank you for helping me! Here is what I have to report.

First of all, I was unable to change the Folder Options like you asked. I tried many times to go to My Computer and clicking the Tools menu, but the window closes when the taskbar goes away before I can even think of getting that far. However, I think I already have it set it to view all files, including system ones, and to show the file extentions.

I downloaded ComboFix.exe and saved it to my desktop, then closed out of all my programs and disconnected the ethernet cable from the back of my computer. I had to leave Opera open to run ComboFix from the Transfers window because my icons on my desktop aren't there. I closed out of Opera immediately after. It brought up a little progress bar that said ComboFix on it, then when it was done, 2 of those flickering minimized screens came up at the bottom left of the computer where she start button should be. They stayed there for about 20 seconds, then there was 3 of them. A few minutes later, an error message came up that just had a red circle with a white X in it, but no words. I clicked Ok and they went away. I left it that way for a good 3 hours and nothing happened. No txt file came up and there is no ComboFix.txt file in C:\. I didn't think it was going to do anything else, so I just turned it off and turned it back on. Let me know if I should have waited longer.

It is also probably worth mentioning that in order for me to get a HijackThis log if I couldn't open anything before the icons on my desktop have gone away, I have to press Windows Button+U to open the Utility Manager, then click Help, then Options at the top, and click on Internet Options… Then I have to click the Privacy tab and click Import and right-click any file and click Open With>Opera to open my browser. From there I click File, then Open… and navigate to C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis. I can't see HijackThis.exe because the file type is set for HTML. If I change that to All files (*.*) then Opera will close. I have to keep it on HTML and type "h" and it brings up a list that contains HijackThis.exe, HijackThis.lnk, and Hijackthis.log. I have to click HijackThis.exe and click Open, then click Save and save it onto itself, then double-click it from the Transfers page. It's all really very troublesome.

Here is the new HijackThis log:

Open taskmanager > at the top left, click File> New Task> copy paste this in or type it in:
c:\windows\system32\restore
double click on: rstrui.exe
run it and see if you can find a restore point that everything worked.

Restart PC
Sorry, you must have posted again before I refreshed the page. Do you know of any way to bring up the Task Manager instead of pressing ctrl alt delete? When I do that, 2 flickering minimized windows come up in the bottom left of the screen.

If you click on those does it open taskmanager?

Run hijackthis. Hit None of the above, Click Do a System Scan Only. Put a checkmark/tick in the box on the left side on these:

Delete these Files if listed:

Reboot and "copy/paste" a new HijackThis log file into this thread.

Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.
No, clicking on them doesn't do anything. It doesn't matter if I click the maximize button or the X, or double-click the title bar. They just stay there.

I did what you said and put a check in those and clicked Fix checked. It got rid of all of them except one. I looked in C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs and C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Desktop but there are no BMP files of any name in either of those. After rebooting, my computer behaves the same as it has been all this time. Nothing has changed. Actually, now that I think about it, the task bar goes away at boot and it doesn't come back up a few times like it used to. That's the only change I can see. Here's the newest HijackThis log.

As far as computer behavior, there is no change. Thank you for doing all this by the way.
Yes. The taskbar and icons on the desktop still disappear as soon as Windows starts, and pressing ctrl+alt+del just makes 2 flickering minimized windows appear at the bottom left that say C:\Windows in the titlebar. I can't do anything to them.
What happens in safe mode? Restart your computer in Safe Mode. Press F8 after the Power-On Self Test (POST) is done. If the Windows Advanced Options Menu does not appear, try restarting and then pressing F8 several times after the POST screen. Choose the Safe Mode option from the Windows Advanced Options Menu then press Enter. This can take several miniutes to load.
I did what you said and it took me to a screen that had Safe Mode, Safe Mode with Networking, and Safe Mode with Command Prompt. I chose the regular Safe Mode one. Once it started up, it brought up a message explaining what Safe Mode was. It said to press Yes to run in Safe Mode, so I did that. As soon as my taskbar and icons loaded, they went right away and didn't come back. My wallpaper was all black and it said Safe Mode in all 4 corners. I couldn't even get Opera to work to reply to this, so I had to reboot.
