Hello Victoria,

You did just fine . I am basically looking at a clean log, no malware or viruses that I can see but you have your system set for Selective Startup and everything that starts on your system may not be showing on your Hijackthis log. We need to configure your system for Normal Startup

To change that we have to run a command from the run box and by default its not showing on Vista, its very easy to fix.

1. Right click on the Vista start menu and click Properties.
2. In the properties window select the Start Menu tab and click Customize.
3. Scroll down and tick the box to the side of Run Command. Click OK and close out the window, now you can see Run Command in the start menu.

Then click on your Start Button and the click on RUN and type in msconfig and click on OK, with Vista you will get a warning box, click OK , when it loads on the General Tab, click the Radio button for Normal Start up and ok your way out.

Then run HJT again and post a new log and let me know what issues your having?

If everything is clear? Why do I get rediredted. And why am I not able to download and run applications? And who has been messing with my registry? I had it on selective start up on purpose. I do not want AOL to start when I start my computer. Also, in the list of process, anything to do with AOL will not "end process".Could this virus be hiding because it sure seems like I have an infection. In HJT log is there supposed to be a #20? It seems everyone else has it. Thanks so much for your help! Victoria
You did not have to stop AOL from loading by using msconfig, you could have just opened AOL and under properties there should be an option to not have it run at start up. FYI, a few issues back, PCWorld rated the top 10 Best and Worst Software Programs and guess what, AOL came in 1st place as the worst.

Open HijackThis > Do a System Scan Only, close your browser and all open windows including this one, the only program or window you should have open is HijackThis, check the following entries and click on Fix Checked.

R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page =
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant =
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,CustomizeSearch =

The rest of your log looks fine, all systems are different, because you have no 020 entry like everyone else does not mean your infected. Where are you being redirected?

Download Deckard's System Scanner (DSS) to your Desktop. Note: You must be logged onto an account with administrator privileges.
  • Close all applications and windows.
  • Double-click on dss.exe to run it, and follow the prompts.
  • When the scan is complete, two text files will open - main.txt <- this one will be maximized and extra.txt<-this one will be minimized
  • Copy (Ctrl+A then Ctrl+C) and paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of main.txt and the extra.txt to your post. in your reply
Hi Ken,
I was able to find the place to stop AOL from running at start up. Thank you. I went to HJT, made sure all windows were close and fixed the four items you requested. Right after I finished "Spybot wanted me to confirm AOL to my browser? I confirmed it because I thought it had something to do with what I had just done but I'm not sure. Here is the Spybot list-

II havent had any redirects today. So far so good. My log pages are still blank? Are they suppose to be? hope you're having a good day Ken! Thanks for all your help. Victoria3
Victoria,

I would still like to know what site you where being redirected to?? Also what log file are you referring to, Deckard?? The scan did not complete so there will be no log.

Try running Deckard in Safemode and see if it will run, it does not remove anything but the report will be very informative.

To Enter Safemode
  • Go to Start> Shut off your Computer> Restart
  • As the computer starts to boot-up, Tap the F8 KEY somewhat rapidly,
this will bring up a menu.
  • Use the Up and Down Arrow Keys to scroll up to Safemode
  • Then press the Enter Key on your Keyboard
Tutorial if you need it How to boot into Safemode

If still no luck with Deckard, run Malwarebytes.

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from Here or Here

Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
  • Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
  • The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.<– Don't forget this
  • When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.(See Extra Note)
  • The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy and Paste the entire report in your next reply along with a New Hijackthis log.
Hi Ken,
I didn;t pay much attention to where I was redirected but I remember one was a used car site and a few were online games but mostly my browser would quit and I would have to resign-on to AOL untill it happened again. That's what was happening when I was trying to post at your site. I tried to run Deckard's in safe mode but it still didn't work? I ran Mawarebytes and it found nothing. When I was talking about my logs it wasn't about Combo Fix, Any log for any program comes up blank and I have to copy and paste it to a word document. Is that normal? I really don;t know. Also in my "taskmnger", under performance it says I have "0 free physical memory " it never used to? and I have not added anything but a few tools to fix this problem? Next, I have these "desktop.ini" icons on my desktop? Where do they belong? Thank you Ken!

Victoria,

HJT was denied access to the host files because most likely Spybot Search and Destroy has it blocked  This way a malware program cannot gain access to it and change anything.

As far as your other issues, they sound like windows problems and we just do malware removal on this forum and Malwarebytes found nothing and your HJT log is clean.

You can post here in our other forum for windows issues and they can help you .

Hi Ken,
I guess I shouldn;t have posted a new topic. It seems I was removed. Sorry, I thought this post would have been closed out. I'm new at this and didn't mean to be such a pest. Anyway, I'm having the same trouble that I had a few weeks ago. I had to restore my computer so maybe that is the problem? Here is my HJT log;
