Hello I am very new to this, but would appreciate some help in fixing my pc. Firstly I believe all this came from a smiley central program I downloaded from fun web products. Not fun. My computer has avast and ad-aware se personal running on it. I get a message everytime I start my pc from avast saying Win32:adware-gen(adw) it asks to be moved to chest, which I do, but why can't you delete it?, all this stuff is making the computer really slow. I just want it all gone. I have removed this fun web whatever and could only do so by goingto the website and downloading an uninstall program because the usual method through the control panel would not work. (I found this advise on Gladiator Security) I've tried emptying temp files but a couple refused to be removed. I hope this makes sense, I am a novice and would appreciate very simple step by step advice. Thanks for your time.
Install HijackThis

  • Download HJTInstall.exe to your Desktop.
  • Doubleclick HJTInstall.exe to install it.
  • By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis .
  • Click on Install.
  • It will create a HijackThis icon on the desktop.
  • Once installed, it will launch Hijackthis.
  • Click on the Do a system scan and save a logfile button. It will scan and the log should open in notepad.
  • Copy/Paste the log to your next reply please.
Don't use the Analyse This button, its findings are dangerous if misinterpreted.
Don't have Hijackthis fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.
Thankyou for your fast reply. Sorry about this, I feel a bit sily but when I attempt to do first action, clicking on that hjt link, i can't get to that page, there is an error, any other way to get there? Thanks again for your time.
Hi

Sounds like something is blocking it. Lets try this

Download Deckard's System Scanner (DSS) to your Desktop. Note: You must be logged onto an account with administrator privileges.
  • Close all applications and windows.
  • Double-click on dss.exe to run it, and follow the prompts.
  • For Vista users, right-click DSS and select Run As Administrator
  • If asked to install HijackThis click on Yes
  • When the scan is complete, two text files will open - main.txt <- this one will be maximized and extra.txt<-this one will be minimized
  • Copy (Ctrl+A then Ctrl+C) and paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of main.txt and the extra.txt in your next reply
Thanks. That worked, here goes:

Now post back with a new HijackThis log, and let me know how the computer is now.
Hi,
Firstly the computer has been performing 100% better, even since your post before this one.
Re: dodo.com, This computer was given to my by a friend and the owner was a relative who had passed away.
Being a previous mac user I was unfamiliar with pc processes, so did not wipe computer, just deleted old files and some programs. So there are a few items on here that are left by previous owner with passwords etc that I don't know and have no way of finding out. I believe dodo was his internet service provider, i use optus but some of the old files may be present.
Thanks again for your help.

Hi

Then you just need to do this.

Run HijackThis, select Do a system scan only and place checks against the following entries (if they are still present):

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = http://www.dodo.com.au/

WITH ALL OTHER WINDOWS CLOSED Click on Fix Checked exit HijackThis and reboot.

You can now delete DSS from your Desktop and then delete this folder:
C:\Deckards

1 - Update Adobe Reader
Earlier versions of Adobe Reader have known security flaws so it is recommended that you update your copy
  • Go to Start > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs
  • Remove ALL instances of Adobe Reader
  • Re-boot your computer as required.
  • Once ALL versions of Adobe Reader have been uninstalled, visit: www.adobe.com/uk/products/acrobat/readstep2.html and download the latest version of Adobe Reader
OR, after uninstalling Adobe Reader, you could try installing Foxit Reader from >here<
Foxit Reader has fewer add-ons therefore loads more quickly.

Congratulations, you appear to be malware free.

Please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:

First we need to flush your System Restore points after ridding yourself of malware:

  • Click Start | Help and Support | Undo changes to your computer with System Restore.
  • Click Create A Restore Point then click Next. Give it a name it and then click Create, then Close.
  • Close the Help and Support Center box.
  • Click Start | Run and type Cleanmgr
  • Select (C: ) then click OK.
  • Click the More Options tab.
  • Click Clean Up in the System Restore Section.

This will remove all previous restore points except the newly created one.

Malwarebytes Anti-Malware is a good program to keep. If you wish to keep it, use it to do a quick scan once a week and keep it updated.
Remember, only the paid for version offers real-time protection

Here is another couple of free programs I recommend.

Winpatrol
Winpatrol is heuristic protection program, meaning it looks for patterns in codes that work like malware. It also takes a snapshot of your system's critical resources and alerts you to any changes that may occur without you knowing. You can read more about Winpatrol's features here.

You can get a free copy of Winpatrol or use the Plus version for more features.

You can read Winpatrol's FAQ if you run into problems.

Spyware Blaster
SpywareBlaster is a program that is used to secure Internet Explorer by making it harder for ActiveX programs to run on your computer. It does this by disabling known offending ActiveX programs from running at all.

You can download SpywareBlaster from Javacool.

If you need help in using SpywareBlaster, you can read SpywareBlaster's tutorial at Bleeping Computer.

Hosts File
A Hosts file is like a phone book. You look up someone's name in the phone book before calling him/her. Similarly, your PC will look up the website's IP address before you can view the website.

Hosts file will replace your current Hosts file with another one containing well-known advertisement sites, spyware sites and other bad sites. This new Hosts file will protect you by re-directing these bad sites to 127.0.0.1.

Here is a good Hosts file:

MVPS Hosts File

A tutorial about Hosts File can be found at Malware Removal.

Make sure your Windows is ALWAYS up to date!

An unpatched Windows is vulnerable and even with the "best" Antivirus and Firewall installed, malware will find its way through.
So visit http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/ to download and install the latest updates.

Update your Antivirus programs and other security products regularly to avoid new threats that could infect your system.

Here is some great information from experts in this field that will help you stay clean and safe online.
http://forum.malwareremoval.com/viewtopic.php?t=14

Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.

I'd be grateful if you could reply to this post so that I know you have read it and, if you've no other questions, the thread can be closed.
Hi,
Thanks again for your help.
Something I have done has gone wrong.
I followed all your instructions, everything good up to system restore.
Then installed all suggested downloads (win patrol) etc.
Computer ran much slower but that's to be expected I suppose as they are filtering stuff.
Then thought I better upgrade mozilla fire fox because browser said so.
Well that didn't turn out so well, couldn't see web pages properly, so then I downgraded to firefox 2, no good either.
So then I used system restore point, that I created before downlading new programs.
Now in my yahoo msgr, I can't go to mail inbox.
Firefox does not work at all.
This internet explorer is ridiculously slow, and I haven't managed to even be able to access my yahoo mail.
Thanks for your time, itis greatly appreciated, I did a new hijack this for you.

Hi I personally never use System restore or defrag, they always make things worse for me. I take it the problems arose when you installed one of the programs i recommended? Can you remember which?
Hi, It could have been spyblaster as it took around 5 gos to download. But those programs aren't there after i did the system restore. Obviously that was the wrong thing to do. Still unable to access my email through yahoo. Thanks again for your time
