Hi, I've been having problems with an annoying (and well hidden) piece of malware which has recently attached itself to my computer.
Normally I'm pretty good at removing spyware etc and always run a scan with AVG Antispyware (remembering to update the signatures database first) after every Internet session.
In the last few days, however, I seem to have acquired something that is not detectable by AVG and, despite downloading and running some well-regarded malware packages (A-squared, Avast, Spyware Doctor, Spyware Detector and Ad-Aware) the problem will not go away.
The problem appears as a pop-up which is usually a dialogue box telling me that my computer may be infected and is running slow because of this, and suggests that I can cure the problem by connecting to a free download site called Spyware Secure. Often a "Spyware Secure" screen will also appear at the same time, cunningly disguised as a Windows "security-type" of screen, and warning of all sorts of problems occuring if I don't download Spyware Secure. Don't worry, I haven't done this.
I've Googled "Spyware Secure" and the general opinion is that it is a scam (no surprise there then).
I am also having occasional pop ups appear which are full screen adverts for various firms and services (despite having my popup blocker on). I'm assumimg that the same piece of malware that is producing the "Spyware Secure" pop up is also directing Internet Explorer to these sites.
I've attached the results of my system processes scan below and, whilst some of these applications seem legitimate, I'm reluctant to start deleting any just because I don't recognise their function.
Any advice would be gratefully received.

Hello desparate dan and Welcome to the forums!

My name is Gringo and I'll be glad to help you with your computer problems. HijackThis logs can take some time to research, so please be patient with me. I know that you need your computer working as quickly as possible, and I will work hard to help see that it happens.

Please do not run any other tool until instructed to do so!
Please reply to this thread, do not start another!
Please tell me about any problems that have occurred during the fix.
Please tell me of any other symptoms you may be having as these can help also.
Please try as much as possible not to run anything while executing a fix.

If you follow these instructions, everything should go smoothly.

First I would like to point out that you have Six antispyware's running and two anti virus running at the same time.
Before we continue we need to trim this down to one anti virus and one antispyware.

:multiple Anti Virus programs:

It looks like you are operating your computer with multiple Anti Virus programs running in memory at once:

AVG
Avast

Anti-virus programs take up an enormous amount of your computer's resources when they are actively scanning your computer. Having two anti-virus programs running at the same time can cause your computer to run very slow, become unstable and even, in rare cases, crash.

Please go into add/remove programs and remove one of them.

Now you have six antispyware running at the same time

Windows Defender
Ad-Aware
a-squared Free
AVG Anti-Spyware
Spyware Doctor
SpywareDetector

this can use allot of resources also, so pick one and disable the rest so they are all not running at the same time

you can go to -this page- to see how to disable most of these programs

I like spyware doctor or a-squared if you want my opinion.

:older version of hijackthis:

You are using an older version of hijackthis please uninstall the old version
1. click on start
2. then go to settings
3. after that you need control panel
4. look for the icon add remove programs
choose hijackthis and click on remove

:new hijackthis:

  • Download HJTInstall.exe to your Desktop.
  • Double click HJTInstall.exe to install it.
  • By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis .
  • Click on Install.
  • It will create a HijackThis icon on the desktop.
  • Once installed, it will launch Hijackthis.
  • Click on the Do a system scan and save a log file button. It will scan and the log should open in notepad.
  • Copy/Paste the log to your next reply please.

Don't use the Analyse This button, its findings are dangerous if misinterpreted.
Don't have Hijackthis fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required
    .

uninstall list

Make an uninstall list using HijackThis
To access the Uninstall Manager you would do the following:

1. Start HijackThis
2. Click on the Config button
3. Click on the Misc Tools button
4. Click on the Open Uninstall Manager button.
5. Click on the Save list… button and specify where you would like to save this file. When you press Save button a notepad will open with the contents of that file. Simply copy and paste the contents of that notepad here on your next reply.

:information and logs:

In your next post I need the following

1.new log from hijackthis
2.uninstall list

Gringo
Hi Gringo
Many thanks for your reply.
As requested, please find below the new log from the updated version of "hijack this" and also the uninstall list.
You were right about me running so many applications, my computer was really running slowly, and booting up was taking forever.
I think I've disabled all of the antivirus / anti spyware programmes with the exception of AVG which I've been using for a little while and have kind of got used to. I've left Zone Alarm running for now even though I've heard some suggestions that, although it is effective, it does tend to slow other applications down quite a bit.
Look forward to hearing from you.

Hello desparate dan

Good you only have one antivirus running now

but you still have 5 of the antimalware running
below is the instructions on how to disable them
All of them can interfere with thefix and make the fix fail
please leave them disabled untill I give the all clean speach

I think your ad-aware is outdated if it is not 2007 then go ahead and uninstall it and later I will tell you where to download 2007 if you still want it.
If it is 2007 then follow these instructions to disable it

:disable Ad-Aware 2007:

  • First please disable Ad-Aware 2007 as it may interfere with repairs.

  • Click the Settings button, Auto Scans tab, and under "Scan on Ad-Aware startup",
  • be sure both selections for "No automated scan" are checked (green).
  • Then click Save and close Ad-Aware.

:Disable AVG Anti-Spyware:

  • Please disable AVG Anti-Spyware until the computer is clean.

  • Open AVG Anti-Spyware by double-clicking the multi-colored box emblazoned with an 'S' in the system tray.
  • In the 'Resident Shield' section, toggle the AVG Anti-Spyware active protection 'off' by clicking 'Change state' which will then change the protection status to 'inactive'.
  • If you are instructed to reboot at any time during your cleanup, AVG Anti-Spyware will prompt you as to whether you would like to "Restart the Resident Shield".
  • Reply 'no' and set it to 'inactive' for the duration of your cleanup.

Don't forget to re-enable it, when your computer is clean.

:disable Windows defender:

  • Please disable Windows Defender Real Time Protection as it may interfere with the fix.
    To disable Windows Defender:
  • Open Windows Defender
  • Click Tools
  • Click General Settings
  • Scroll down to Real Time Protection Options
  • Uncheck Turn on Real Time Protection (recommended)
  • Close Windows Defender
Don't forget to re-enable it, when your computer is clean..

:disable Spyware Doctor:

please disable Spyware Doctor as it may interfere with repairs.

1.Open Spyware Doctor
2.click the "OnGuard" button on the left side.
3.Uncheck "Activate OnGuard".
please remember to reactivate it when we are finished

Disable A-Squared's Guard

  • Right-click the A2 system tray icon and select "Guard Settings"
  • Under the General tab uncheck "Enable background guard on System Startup".
  • Reboot the machine to complete the change.

Navilog1 for Windows 2000/XP

  • Please download Navilog1 by IL-MAFIOSO:

  • Extract its contents to the desktop.
  • Double click on navilog1.exe to install it on your computer.
  • When the installation is complete, the tool will start automatically.
  • If it doesn't start automatically, please double click on Navilog1 shortcut on your desktop to run it.
  • Press E for English from the language Menu.
  • Type 1 in the next Menu to select Search and press Enter.
  • Wait for the Scan to finish (It may take a reasonable amount of time)
  • Press any key as requested .
  • A new document will be produced: fixnavi.txt.
  • Please copy/paste the contents of this report in your next reply.
The report is also saved in the root of the directory, "%SystemDrive% ixnavi.txt". (usually C: ixnavi.txt)

:information and logs:

In your next post I need the following

1.let me have the log from Navilog1
2.and a new hijackthis log

Gringo
Hi Gringo
Ok, I've deleted Ad-Aware (I think it was a 2008 version but no problem, I can easily reinstall). The AVG resident shield is inactive anyway (I'm using the free version which has the shield disabled). The real time protection on Windows Defender has been disabled as well as Spyware Doctor "on Guard". I've unistalled A-Squared (its a free application so I can download again later if necessary). Hopefully everything is shut down now.

The navilog results are listed below together with the new "hijack this" scan:
Thanks for taking so much time with this Gringo, its really appreciated.

Hello

five day bump

It has been five days since my last post.

  • do you still need help with this?
  • do you need more time?
  • are you having problems following my instructions?
  • if after 48hrs you have not replied to this thread then it will have to be closed!

Gringo
Hi Gringo Sorry for the delay in replying, I've been away for a few days. As suggested, I downloaded MBAM and did a scan. MBAM found a naughty little programme called setup.exe which has now been removed. Unfortunately I have been unable to download the Kapersky antivirus application. Every time I try I get to the download screen (which tells me to wait for the Java applet to download) the download seems to freeze. I can use the tabs in the download dialogue box (update, scan etc) so its not a complete screen freeze, but the download counter stays at 0% even after waiting 10 minutes or so. At this point the programme will also not exit unless I go into Windows task manager and force an "end task" on it. After a couple of failed attempts with Kapersky I did a virus scan with AVG (maybe not as good but at least it didn't find anything). In any case, I have not been bothered by any more pop ups, nor have I been re-directed to some advertiser's web site while on-line. I do think that the programme discovered by MBAM was responsible for the problem but I'll keep an eye on things in case it starts again (I'm quietly confident we've cracked in though). I realise that this was probably just a minor problem compared to some that you will have come across but I really appreciate the support you've given me with this. Many thanks once again. Dan.
Hello Dan

sorry for not replying sooner they have hade me working alot of hours at work

I would like you to do this scan because kaspersky wouldn't work

PANDA ONLINE SCAN
Place a shortcut to Panda ActiveScan on your desktop.

  • A new window will open…click the Check Now button
  • Enter your Country
  • Enter your State/Province
  • Enter your e-mail address and click send
  • Select either Home User or Company
  • Click the big Scan Now button
  • If it wants to install an ActiveX component allow it
  • It will start downloading the files it requires for the scan (Note: It may take a couple of minutes)
  • When download is complete, click on Local Disks to start the scan
  • When the scan completes, if anything malicious is detected, click the See Report button, then Save Report and save it to a convenient location.
Post the contents of the Panda scan report, along with a new HijackThis Log.

Hi Gringo
Thought you were being a bit paranoid asking for the virus scan, especially since AVG didn't find anything, but turns out you were absolutely right. See results of Panda scan below as well as Hi Jack this scan:

Hello dan

The logs look pretty good the only things showing up is cookies , the tools that we used and one infected program Advanced Uninstaller PRO 2006 version 7 if you got this from P2P then you should uninstall it and delete these folders

note:—>D:\Program Files\Innovative Solutions<—this folder
note:—>E:\Program Files\Innovative Solutions<—this folder

if you paid for this program then it might be a false positive

and how is the computer running?

This is my general post for when your logs show no more signs of malware ;)- Please let me know if you still are having problems with your computer and what these problems are

:remove tools:

  • Let's clear out the programmes we've been using to clean up your computer, they are not suitable for general malware removal and could cause damage if used inappropriately.

Please download OTMoveIt and save it to desktop.
  • Double click OTMoveIt.exe to launch the programme.
  • Click on the CleanUp! button.
  • OTMoveIt will download a list from the Internet, if your firewall or other defensive programmes alerts you, allow it access.
  • Select Yes when the "Begin cleanup Process?" prompt appears.
  • If you are prompted to Reboot during the cleanup, select Yes.
  • When finished exit out of OTMoveIt
  • The tool will delete itself once it finishes, if not delete it by yourself.

:Set correct settings for files:
  • Click Start > My Computer > Tools menu (at top of page) > Folder Options > View tab.
  • Under "Hidden files and folders" if necessary select Do not show hidden files and folders.
  • If unchecked please check Hide protected operating system files (Recommended)
  • If necessary check "Display content of system folders"
  • If necessary Uncheck Hide file extensions for known file types.
  • Click OK

:clear system restore points:
  • This is a good time to clear your existing system restore points and establish a new clean restore point:
  • Go to Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > System Restore
  • Select Create a restore point, and Ok it.
  • Next, go to Start > Run and type in cleanmgr
  • Select the More options tab
  • Choose the option to clean up system restore and OK it.
This will remove all restore points except the new one you just created.

:Make your Internet Explorer more secure:please visit this page that gives instructions to do this

:Turn On Automatic Updates:

Turn On Automatic Updates
1. Click Start, click Run, type sysdm.cpl, and then press ENTER.
2. Click the Automatic Updates tab, and then click to select one of the following options. We recommend that you select the Automatic (recommended) Automatically download recommended updates for my computer and install them

If you click this setting, click to select the day and time for scheduled updates to occur. You can schedule Automatic Updates for any time of day. Remember, your computer must be on at the scheduled time for updates to be installed. After you set this option, Windows recognizes when you are online and uses your Internet connection to find updates on the Windows Update Web site or on the Microsoft Update Web site that apply to your computer. Updates are downloaded automatically in the background, and you are not notified or interrupted during this process. An icon appears in the notification area of your taskbar when the updates are being downloaded. You can point to the icon to view the download status. To pause or to resume the download, right-click the icon, and then click Pause or Resume. When the download is completed, another message appears in the notification area so that you can review the updates that are scheduled for installation. If you choose not to install at that time, Windows starts the installation on your set schedule.

or visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.

Consider a custom hosts file
Consider a custom hosts file such as MVPS HOSTS. This custom hosts file effectively blocks a wide range of unwanted ads, banners, 3rd party Cookies, 3rd party page counters, web bugs, and many hijackers.
For information on how to download and install, please read this tutorial by WinHelp2002
Note: Be sure to follow the instructions to disable the DNS Client service before installing a custom hosts file.

Now you have followed my advice - it's time to lodge a complaint against what you have suffered………

I'd be grateful if you could reply to this post so that I know you have read it and, if you've no other questions, the thread can then be closed.

Gringo Really useful stuff, thanks for this, and thanks for your time (computer is running fine and no more problems, lets hope it stays that way!). Regards. Dan
