Hello Sparkey2372 and welcome to the What the Tech Forums

My name is Trevuren and I will be helping you with your problem.

A. First we must disable some of your security programs so that they do not interfere with the running of our tools:

MCAFEE ANTIVIRUS
Please navigate to the system tray on the bottom right hand corner and look for a [external image: Posted Image] sign.
  • right-click it -> chose "Exit."
  • a popup will warn that protection will now be disabled. Click on "Yes" to disable the Antivirus guard.
You succesfully disabled the McAfee Guard.

B. Please download ComboFix by sUBs from HERE or HERE directly to your Desktop.

Note: If you already have ComboFix on your machine, please DELETE it from your desktop before downloading the newest version.

Go to [external image: Posted Image] -> Run -> copy/paste the following single line command in the runbox & click OK

"%userprofile%\desktop\combofix.exe" /killall

[external image: Posted Image]
  • DO NOT USE your computer for any other purpose while ComboFix is running.
  • ComboFix may restart your computer, this is normal.
  • When finished, it will produce a log, ComboFix.txt.
  • Please post ComboFix.txt in your next reply along with a new HijackThis log.

Notes:

1.Do not mouse-click Combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
2. ComboFix may reset a number of Internet Explorer's settings, including making I-E the default browser.
3. Combofix prevents autorun of ALL CD, floppy and USB devices to assist with malware removal & increase security. If this is an issue or makes it difficult for you – please tell your helper.
4. CF disconnects your machine from the internet. The connection is automatically restored before CF completes its run. If CF runs into difficulty and terminates prematurely, the connection can be manually restored by restarting your machine.
Oh wow. Thank you so much, you have no idea how much this helps me because i have no idea how to run any of this stuff.

THE COMBOFIX LOG:

Oh, and should I run a McAfee virus scan to see if it is gone? And should worry about the recovery program thing? (I'm sorry, I don't know that much about this kind of thing. (Sorry for all the edits) My computer just did a McAfee virus scan and it found no infected files!
1. That is good news. We still have some work to do.

2. A. First we must disable some of your security programs so that they do not interfere with the running of our tools:

McAfee

B. 1. Please open Notepad
  • Click Start , then Run
  • Type notepad .exe in the Run Box.
2. Now copy/paste the entire content of the codebox below into the Notepad window:

KillAll::

File::
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\geede.dll
C:\Temp\sonetud5.exe
C:\sqmdata08.sqm
C:\sqmnoopt08.sqm
C:\sqmdata07.sqm
C:\sqmnoopt07.sqm

Folder::
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\sfig
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\provdll
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\olixds01
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\OBDE
C:\Temp\stmpv4

Driver::
TSKMS

Registry::
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run]
"Guq"=-
[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\shared tools\msconfig\startupreg\KernelFaultCheck]
Note: the above code was created specifically for this user. If you are not this user, do NOT follow these directions as they could damage the workings of your system.

3. Save the above as CFScript.txt

4. Now drag the CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe as depicted in the animation below. This will start ComboFix again. Do not use your computer for any other purpose while ComboFix is running.

5. All your monitoring programs (Antivirus/Antispyware, Guards and Shields) will be stopped.

[external image: Posted Image]

Note:
Do not mouse-click combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

6. ComboFix will automatically REBOOT your machine when the KillAll:: switch is used..

7. Post the following logs/Reports:
  • ComboFix.txt
  • Fresh HijackThis log run after all the other tools have performed their cleanup.
CF disconnects your machine from the internet. The connection is automatically restored before CF completes its run. If CF runs into difficulty and terminates prematurely, the connection can be manually restored by restarting your machine.

C. Using Internet Explorer, please do a Kaspersky Online Scan

Answer Yes, when prompted to install an ActiveX component.
  • The program will then begin downloading the latest definition files.
  • Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
  • Locate the Scan Settings button & configure as follows:
    • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
      • Extended
    • Scan Options:
      • Scan Archives
      • Scan Mail Bases
  • Click OK & have it scan My Computer
  • Once the scan is complete, it will provide a report if your system is infected. It does not provide an option to clean/disinfect. We only require a report from it.

    [external image: Posted Image]

  • Click the Save as Text button to save the file to your desktop and post it in your next reply
* Turn off the real time scanner of any existing antivirus program while performing the online scan
This might be kind of a stupid question, but would Wordpad work? When i click Notepad it says: "The drive or network connection that the shortcut 'Notepad.ink' refers to is unavailable. Make sure that the disk is properly inserted or the network is available, then try again."
Ok, i got Notepad to work. The icons didn't work, so i went through Start > Run > Notepad

Heres the logs you requested:

Please do not forget the following scan, it is VERY important:

Is this what your looking for? The word rootkit down there isn't making me feel much better. I know what they are and they don't sound very nice. ——————————————————————————– KASPERSKY ONLINE SCANNER 7 REPORT Saturday, July 12, 2008 Operating System: Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition Service The word rootkit down there isn't making me feel much better. I know what they are and they don't sound very nice

They are not very nice either. The one removed by ComboFix is now in Quarantine and will be permanently deleted from your system during the final cleanup procedures.

*** Once we have finished cleaning your machine, I recommend that you change all your passwords, specially anything to do with financial matters like banking and credit cards. If you still feel uncomfortable with the "rootkit" having been on your system, then you should format your drive and perform a complete re-install.

In the mean time:

KillAll::

File::
C:\SmitfraudFix.exe
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\iaqiukfs.exe
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\pup.exe

Folder::
C:\Documents and Settings\Joe\Desktop\SmitfraudFix

Thanks again for all your help! :notworthy:

Here are some tips to reduce the potential for spyware infection in the future:

1. Make your Internet Explorer More Secure
  • From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
  • Click once on the Security tab.
  • Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
  • Click once on the Custom Level button.

    • Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt.
    • Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable.
    • Change the Initialise and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable.
    • Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt.
    • Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt.
    • Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt.
    • When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
    • If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
  • Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.
2. Use and Update an Anti-Virus Software - I can not overemphasize the need for you to use and update your Anti-virus application on a regular basis. With the ever increasing number of new variants of malware arriving on the scene daily, you become very susceptible to an attack without updated protection.

3. FIREWALL
Using a third-party firewall will allow you to give/deny access for applications that want to go online. Without a firewall your computer is susceptible to being hacked and taken over. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly. A tutorial on Firewalls and a listing of some available ones can be found here

Do not install more than one firewall program because they will conflict with each other

4. Make sure you keep your Windows OS current by visiting Windows update regularly to download and install any critical updates and service packs. Without these you are leaving the back door open.

5. Consider a custom hosts file such as MVPS HOSTS. This custom hosts file effectively blocks a wide range of unwanted ads, banners, 3rd party Cookies, 3rd party page counters, web bugs, and many hijackers.
For information on how to download and install, please read this tutorial by WinHelp2002
Note: Be sure to follow the instructions to disable the DNS Client service before installing a custom hosts file.

6. Download and install the free version of WinPatrol. This program protects your computer in a variety of ways and will work well with your existing security software. Have a look at this tutorial to help you get started with the program.

7. Install Spybot - Search and Destroy - Download and install Spybot - Search and Destroy with its TeaTimer option. This will provide real time spyware and hijacker protection on your computer alongside your virus protection. You should scan your computer with the program on a regular basis just as you would with your anti-virus software. A tutorial on installing and using this product can be found here:
Instructions for - Spybot S & D and Ad-aware

8. Finally, I strongly recommend that you read TonyKlein's good advice So how did I get infected in the first place?
