Hoping someone can isolate what's causing my computer to behave so oddly. It's been happening over the past 3 weeks - I will attempt to close a page and there will be a very brief flash of a blue page with writing (from the brief glimpses I've had it looks a fair bit like the scandsk screen that sometimes comes up when I start the computer) then everything goes black, then the restart kicks in. Any help provided would be greatly appreciated.
No light to be shed? The problem is very annoying and has, on more than one occasion, caused loss of a fair amount of work. Any help you could give would be greatly appreciated.
You needed to copy/paste the HijackThis log, not attach it.

Stay with this topic until I give you the all clean post.

You might want to print these instructions out.

I suggest you do this:

Double-click My Computer.
Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
Click the View tab.
Clear "Hide file extensions for known file types."
Under the "Hidden files" folder, select "Show hidden files and folders."
Clear "Hide protected operating system files."
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Please do not delete anything unless instructed to.

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
Download - ATF Cleaner»
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.

(If you use FireFox or the Opera browser
To keep saved passwords, click No at the prompt.)

It's normal after running ATF cleaner that the PC will be slower to boot the first time or two.

Next:

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop.

  • Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
  • At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected .
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location and post the results.
  • Note: If you receive a notice that some of the items couldn't be removed, that they have been added to the delete on reboot list, please reboot.
Also "copy/paste" a new HijackThis log file into this thread.

Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.
Thanks for the prompt response! I've done as instructed and things went as you described except that when I hit the 'finish' button at the end of running Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware Spybot popped two alerts. One was an SCR Extension handler value change (from "%1"/S to "%1"%x - although that x is superscript) and one REG Extension Handler change. Since I didn't know any better I clicked 'accept change'. I hope that didn't undo all your work. Start up was much, much slower than usual and it took a while to open the open page as well. I'll have to wait and see if the shut down/restart thing happens again. It's done it twice tonight but it could be hours before it does it again. Apologies for not copying/pasting earlier - I guess I forgot that's what we're meant to do! Download ComboFix from Here or Here to your Desktop.
**Note: In the event you already have Combofix, please delete it from your desktop and download this new version . It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop**
——————————————————————–
  • Close any open browsers and make sure you are disconnected from the net. Unplug the cable if need be before running combofix.
  • WARNING: IF you have not already done so Combofix will disconnect your machine from the Internet when it starts
  • Please do not re-connect your machine back to the Internet until Combofix has completely finished.
——————————————————————–

Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
When finished, it will produce a report for you.
Please post the "C:\ComboFix.txt" along with a new HijackThis log for further review

****Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall or freeze ****

*If there is no internet connection when Combofix has completely finished then restart your computer to restore back the connections.

Give it atleast 20-30 minutes to finish
I've tried to follow the process as you laid out - but have no idea if things went as they should have. The minute I clicked the ComboFix icon I got three warnings; one from window, one from spy doctor and one from spybot.

The windows alert said that windows could not open the file and needed to go online to find a program to open it with. The spy doctor notice flagged a trojan - pws.blancos and the spybot message was about a change to the command process.

While I was pondering what the least destructive reaction would be, the c (what do call it? interface screen?) thingie appeared and basically told me what it was doing. Throughout the process the windows message saying the program couldn't be opened flashed about 75-80 times.

There were several alets from spybot - I allowed the changes since I didn't know what else to do.

Anyway, here are the logs:

It seemed like the start up was going a bit faster than peviously but then the screen flickered/all the icons disappeared for a sec and opening the home page took so longon the first attempt I closed it and opened it again.
Looks like you have about three of the same type of programs.
Ad-Aware, SUPERAntiSpyware and Spyware Doctor

I would uninstall 2 of them using Add/Remove programs.

1.Click Start > Settings > Control Panel.
2.Next, open Add/Remove Programs and remove 2 of them.

Also do this after the above:

  • Click START then RUN
  • Now type Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK. Note the space between the X and the U, it needs to be there.

    • [external image: Posted Image]

Reboot and please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.
Well that was totally unexpected (for me). The steps listed above resulted in Combofix being uninstalled. As happened when I first ran Combofix, I got a spybot message noting the presence of the pws. bancos trojan and a flag from windows saying ti couldn't open the file. Prior to that my machine had been having trouble opening ie and was giving multiple messages about errors with camerafix (not a program I've ever used ,to my knowledge), tea timer and winsock. At the moment it seems to be doing okay - it's not particularly slow or anything.

presence of the pws. bancos trojan and a flag from windows

Are you still getting that?
Does it give you the file name and location?
