If I attempt to click on a web site obtained from a search (Google, Yahoo are the two I've used so far), I will quite often be redirected to some other site.

For example, typing 'hijack this help' will produce a list that included a result of

#

If I click on that entry, instead of being directed to hut.networktechs.com, I was redirected to

Help?

Thank you in advance.
hi,

dont recognize any malware in the log. what about a scan with spybot and ad aware? are they coming up clean?
firewall prompt you for any new processes requesting a connection lately?

Download Deckard's System Scanner to your Desktop.:

http://www.techsupportforum.com/sectools/Deckard/dss.exe
http://deckard.geekstogo.com/dss.exe

Close all applications and windows.
Double-click on dss.exe to run it, and follow the prompts.
When the scan is complete, a text file will open - Main.txt
Copy (Ctrl+A then Ctrl+C) and paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of Main.txt here.
A folder, C:\Deckard\System Scanner, will also open. In it will be another text file, Extra.txt.

C:\Deckard\System Scanner\Extra.txt
Please attach Extra.txt to your post.

Note: some firewalls may warn that sigcheck.exe is trying to access the internet - please ensure that you allow sigcheck.exe permission to do so.
SpyBot and AdAware don't find a thing. I'll download and proceed as directed. Thank you for taking the time to reply.
Main.txt follows

hi rooftopper,

thanks for the info, not much there to worry about. we can try another malware app. and see if it can dig up anything:

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop:

http://www.besttechie.net/tools/mbam-setup.exe

* Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
* Be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
* If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
* Once the program has loaded, select Perform FULL SCAN, then click Scan.
* When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
* Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
* When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location. The log can also be opened by going to Start > All Programs > Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware > Logs > log-date.txt

post the malwarebytes log
Certainly not looking good…or bad depending on your point of view. hi,

normally i would expect to see something (malware) in a log for pages being redirected. are you getting popups or anything?

go to start>run and type in cmd then click ok. at the prompt _ paste in whats in the box below and click enter
nslookup >log.txt

it should generate a .txt file which you can find here.
C:\Documents and Settings\your profile

please post in your reply
Sorry for the delay, I was out of town. Log follows. My guess is it's not going to provide you with that much info. Could this have anything to do with the large number of 'hosts' that show up in the system scan? Again, thanks again for your help. — Default Server: dns-cac-lb-03.ohiordc.rr.com Address: [removed] >
hi,

My guess is it's not going to provide you with that much info.

you right, it didnt. its your isp DNS server. there is a trojan out there that will attempt to change your DNS lookups to provide web page/search redirection.

we will try another malware tool to see if it can dig up anything: combofix:

Download combofix from one of these links and save it to your Desktop:

http://subs.geekstogo.com/ComboFix.exe
http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe

double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
When finished, it will produce a report for you.
Please post the "C:\ComboFix.txt" along with a new HijackThis log for further review

Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall or freeze.
Here ya go. Again, thank you.

hi rooftopper,

yikes, dont recognize any malware in the combofix log either.

Could this have anything to do with the large number of 'hosts' that show up in the system scan?

you mean the host file? what scan do you see the hosts in? can you post a few examples
maybe this is what you mean;

badsite.com 127.0.0.1
That's exactly it. I have a gazillion of them, all with my loopback address as the destination address. I can probably find a report somewhere that has at least some of them listed if that will help. I'm using Spybot, and I THOUGHT that these were all being trapped by it. Am I mistooken?
hi rooftopper, these are part of spybots immunazation? feature. these are sites added to the host file by spybot, so you cant get to them. these are web sites that you would want to avoid.
