Hi,

Earlier today my computer was infected (which I think may have occured when a USB drive was placed in a USB slot) with what looked to be FakeAlert.T based on a google search of the symptoms the PC was experiencing. These included multiple message popups on the bottom right corner of the task bar alerting that the computer was infected and to 'click here' to remove it. I was also getting a red Windows security window popup that said the same thing. Another Windows security message with a very similiar appearance to that of the Windows Security Center said I was suffering from trojandownloader.xs and would take me to a website which offered spyware removal for a cost. This same website often came up without clicking on any of the above messages/link/windows etc. The wallpaper was also replaced by one that said that the computer suffered several errors due to spyware and had a hyperlink to what I suspect was the same website as the one that kept popping up. Another symptom was that the task manager was disabled and a google toolbar was installed on my internet explorer.

Searching for a way to remove it, I stumbled across this forum through this thread, which appeared to resolve a problem very similiar to mine. I started to follow some of the suggested steps, however I didn't do too much because I was unsure how it would affect my PC.

Firstly, I downloaded HiJackThis and did a system scan and saved the log.

Then, I downloaded ComboFix and ran it by typing "%userprofile%\desktop\combofix.exe" /killall. I saved the log it gave me, and then ran HiJackThis again and saved its log. After the restart due to ComboFix, the problem was still evident as there were still the pop messages, windows and wallpaper, however the google toolbar was removed. I still didn't have access to the taskmanger.

I downloaded the JDK 6 update 6 to update my java as was suggested in the above mentioned thread as well as clearing out the java cache. I tried to get logs through the Kaspersky Online Scanner and Eset Online Scanner, however IE crashed both times in the middle of each. After this, a black box which covered most of the computer screen appeared and the computer froze. I attempted to restart the computer, however during the windows loading window, the load bar did something strange (the blue squares became symbols and moved outside the load bar) and the computer froze once more. I turned the computer off, let it chill for 5 minutes then turned it back on, which resulted in Windows loading properly this time.

Unsure of what to do next, I ran ComboFix again using the same command I used previously, and saved the log. This time the popup windows and wallpaper were gone, and have not been back since (around 2 hours or so), so I completed the last suggested step and typed 'Combofix /u' in the run window. Afterwards I noticed I'm still being denied access to the taskmanger. While playing several games, I've had the computer freeze up on me twice, but am unsure whether this is due to the infection or as a result of attempting to remove it (or possibly something else). After restarting the computer due to these freezes, I had that weird windows load error/freeze happen again.

Throughout the whole process I haven't deleted/fixed any files through HiJackThis or those web-based online scanners, only ran ComboFix twice and saved the logs each time along with a corresponding HiJackThis log. (While posting this I noticed I misplaced one of the ComboFix logs)

I'll post each log I have taken and when it was done.

Apologies for not having the other ComboFix log available, I'm not sure how I mucked that one up.

If anyone could assist me in anyway, I'd really appreciate it.

Thanks
Sorry for the delay we are really busy. If you still need help. We'll need to see a fresh log. Reboot and rescan with HiJackThis and post a new log here. Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.

I still run into a few problems on the XP loading screen which causes the computer to restart itself, and have just experieced the computer freezing up for a few seconds then restarting itself (after I updated the graphics card driver it appeared this problem went away, but apparently it did not).

Thanks for the help.
Run - ATF Cleaner instructions here.

Then download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop.

* Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
* Be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
* If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
* Once the program has loaded, select Perform FULL SCAN, then click Scan.
* When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
* Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
* When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location. The log can also be opened by going to Start > All Programs > Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware > Logs > log-date.txt
Hi, I've completed the above steps. Here is the Malwarebyte log. Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware 1.20 Database version: 965 Windows 5.1.2600 Service Pack 2 10:27:07 AM 7/19/2008 mbam-log-7-19-2008 (10-27-07).txt Scan type: Full Scan (C:\|) Objects scanned: 233497 Time elapsed: 41 minute(s), 17 second(s) Memory Processes Infected: 0 Memory Modules Infected: 0 Registry Keys Infected: 0 Registry Values Infected: 0 Registry Data Items Infected: 0 Folders Infected: 0 Files Infected: 2 Memory Processes Infected: (No malicious items detected) Memory Modules Infected: (No malicious items detected) Registry Keys Infected: (No malicious items detected) Registry Values Infected: (No malicious items detected) Registry Data Items Infected: (No malicious items detected) Folders Infected: (No malicious items detected) Files Infected: C:\Program Files\Valve\Steam\uninstall_hl2.exe (Adware.Agent) -> Quarantined and deleted successfully. C:\Program Files\Valve\Steam\uninstall_steam.exe (Adware.Agent) -> Quarantined and deleted successfully. I have run Malwarebyte previously to this, and it removed 4 other infections. I believe I have the logs so can provide them if required. It seems that the problem has become much worse as the computer lasts anywhere between 5 to 15 minutes before it freezes/restarts (so much so that I had to quickly copy the Malwarebyte log to another computer so I could actually reply to this thread).
Hi, my sincere apologies for this late reply!

As the problem ultimately became unbearable, I formatted my hard drive and reinstalled Windows XP (during the first format attempt there appeared to be a problem, with all the letters on the screen jumbled around forming incoherent words, so I formatted again). Afterwards I installed AVG Free, Agnitum Firewall, Spyware Blaster, Spyware Guard, Spyware search & destroy, and Windows Service Pack 2 as suggested by the guides on this forum.

Despite this, I'm still getting the same problems as before! My computer may randomly restart itself without any prior warning or just freeze and then restart. This then leads to problems on the XP loading screen as I mentioned before. When I go into safe mode, it also can be quite screwy, with lines and colours all over the place, as different screen resolutions. Here is a screenshot of what I mean.

I have no idea what could have possibly caused the exact same problems after formatting. Could it possibly be something related to hardware rather than malicious software? Any help whatsoever would be extremely appreciated.
Starting to think it may be a bad hard drive or it is over heating. But I think I would change monitors to see if that is the reason for the screen shot.
I've changed monitors and I get the same problem. Is there a way I can find out exactly what might potentially be causing these problems (whether it be a bad hard drive or over heating)?
So overheating is more than likely the problem causing all these crashes/restarts? Could it also be responsible for the messed up loading bar on the Windows XP loading screen? Is there anything I could try to do (perhaps clean the dust from the fans?) that may help keep the temperature of the CPU from not reaching such high temperatures? EDIT: Also, after a freeze/crash/restart, when the computer reboots I sometimes get a message saying that Windows has recovered from a serious error. I've attached the details of the message if you want to have a look. EDIT2: Could it possibly be caused by my video card? I heard from someone else that suffered a similiar problem that believes it was caused by something related to the video card.

It could be the video card……Cleaning out the dust may help……..Installing another cooling fan my also help.

My expertise is more with spyware not hardware. :smack:

http://forums.whatthetech.com/Hardware_f125.html <<< you may wish to post here.
I cleaned the heatsink for the CPU (which was in a really bad condition) and that has drastically improved the CPU temperature (doesn't peak over 43C now). Still get the random crashes, but have not yet encountered any problems on the XP loading screen. I'll make a post in the hardware section of the forum and see what happens. Thanks for all your help and assistance, it has been greatly appreciated. :)
