Help.....Trojan wont go away

I have been trying to get rid of this trojan but it keeps coming back. I hope someone sees something here that can help me finally get rid of it. Here is my HijackThis log……

Sorry for the delay in answering. I was away on vacation, from trying to get rid of this trojan. It has reappeared yet again. According to AdAware it is called Win32.Trojandownloader.Zlob and has made 14 registry enteries. I am going to quarantine and delete it yet again but I am sure it will be back as it always seems to come back. Hoping you can help! Thanks

Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from here and save it to your Desktop.
  • Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
  • Ensure a checkmark is placed next to both Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version - you'll need to clear it with your firewall.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform full scan and then Scan.
  • When the scan has finished, click OK and then Show Results to view the results - no surprise there!
  • If MBAM finds anything, check the box(es) and click Remove Selected.
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location. The log can also be opened by going to Start > All Programs > Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware > Logs > log-date.txt
Let me have the MBAM log, a fresh HJT log (run in Normal Mode) AND a description of how your PC is behaving.

Assuming that the trojan is now no longer bothering you, i'd say that you were done. I want you to run your PC as normal for a few days and when you are happy that everything is fine, do the following:

Disable System Restore,
Reboot your PC,
Re-enable System Restore,
Create a Restore Point - this will give a clean one should you need it in the future.
A tutorial for System Restore is available here.

The reason for waiting is that if removing the malware has caused a problem, which it occasionally does, you can put your PC back to how it was before the fix. This will re-install the malware, but an infected PC is better than an expensive paperweight!

So I thought it was gone but it seems to be back! I did an adaware pro scan and it showed the same Trojan was back. I did not quarantine it or try to have adaware do away with it and then I immediately did another malwarebytes anti-malware scan. Only thing bad about this all is the Malwarebytes scan came up empty. I have add a HJT scan and the results of the Malwarebytes scans. Trojan.zlob is the file that was found by adaware fyi

I also forgot to mention, I run spyware terminator and a while ago I got a message asking me if I wanted to block or allow a file entitled msiexec.exe. I was not installing anything at the moment and decided, hopefully correctly to block it. Well on occasion now when I open Internet Explorer that file will once again pop up in Spyware Terminator still being blocked, but will attempt to change its extension. I can see the file msiexec.exe change to .tif and a few others I cannot remember. They all are blocked by spyware terminator. Also the last time you told me to delete all previous restore points which I did but then had problems getting a new restore point. I am pretty sure I was able to get a new one but it wasnt as easy as it shouldve been. Once again awaiting your commands o great one

So I thought it was gone but it seems to be back!

Assuming that this is the first time you've run an Ad-Aware scan, i'd say that it was detecting a leftover of your previous infection as MBAM shows nothing. If this isn't the first time you've run one, then the PC has been reinfected and somebody needs to change their surfing habits.
Have Ad-Aware delete whatever it finds, if you haven't already, and then run a fresh scan - it should come back clean, as far as Zlob is concerned.

msiexec.xlsmhtml, msiexec.pub msiexec.cvs.

I need to know where these files are, rather than just what they are called - filepaths are everything with malware.

Go here and click the Kaspersky Online Scanner button - I.E. is required for this scan.
  • Read the Requirements and limitations before you click Accept.
  • Allow the ActiveX download if necessary.
  • Once the database has downloaded click Next.
  • Click Scan Settings and check the "Scan using the following antivirus database" is set to extended, not standard, and then click OK.
  • Click on "My Computer" and then put the kettle on!
  • When the scan has completed, click Save Report As…
  • Enter a name for the file in the Filename: text box and then click the down arrow to the right of Save as type: and select text file (*.txt)
  • Click Save - by default the file will be saved to your Desktop, but you can change this if you wish.
Copy and paste the report into your next reply along with a fresh HJT log, run in Normal Mode, and a description of how your PC is behaving.

Note for Internet Explorer 7 users: If at any time you have trouble with the accept button of the licence, click on the Zoom tool located at the right bottom of the IE window and set the zoom to 75 %. Once the license accepted, reset to 100%.

I did the only Kaspersky scan that was available. This entire line meant nothing in the scan that was available. I looked in scan settings but the directions you gave were nowhere to be found. This is the instruction I could not follow…….Click Scan Settings and check the "Scan using the following antivirus database" is set to extended, not standard, and then click OK. I did do another adaware pro scan and ZLOB did not come up but the infection that Kaspersky found did not show up on that scan either. At 8:05PM spyware once again prevented those files mentioned yesterday from changing extensions. I cannot find in Spyware Terminator any place that lists or keeps a log of the things it prevents. In other words I do not know where the files are located either. I watched the program block it but it did not show where it was just that it blocked it from happening.

I once again await your instruction oh great one! Maybe in your reply you can explain to my son that downloading games from people you dont know can give you a virus even while using psp, as he refuses to listen to me telling him! I have now taken to making him read this topic so he can follow what it takes to fix his computer while he seems intent on destroying it. I do appreciate all your help.

Apologies about the Kav scan - it's a new version and I posted the old instructions. :blush:

Download FindFile by Atribune from here and save it to your Desktop. Once done, you will need to unzip it.

To do this: Right click on the zipped folder and from the menu that appears, click on Extract All…
In the 'Extraction Wizard' window that opens, click on Next> and in the next window that appears, click on Next> again.
In the final window, click on Finish

Double click FileFind.exe to run it.
In the Directory: box ensure that your hard drive's letter is showing - it should be C:.
In the File: box enter: msiexec.*
Click Search to begin.
Once it has completed it's search, FileFind should display it's results in the List of Files: box.
If it shows any, click Export and a Notepad window should open with the infromation in.
Copy and paste this into your next reply.

While these forums are set up to help those who can't help themselves, there are limits as to what will be done. Repeatedly posting on a forum with the same sort of self-inflicted problem will get you labelled as a "frequent flier" and you'll find help harder to come by - you could just be banned altogether.

Peer to peer file sharing programs are an open invitation to slime writers to spread the junk that they write as you cannot guarantee the legitimacy of what you download and I personally wouldn't have any such program on my PC for this reason alone. Adding in the potential to fall foul of copyright law should you find yourself downloading files that aren't legally shareable, I suggest that you remove such programs from your machine right now.

Your son can always install these programs on any machine that he purchases and maintains himself, although breech of copyright is probably going to be your responsibility, so if this is the case maybe you'd like to start saving for a fine should you be targeted by the owners of the rights to the files.

These are the files that came up when I did the scan you ask for. As for the Kaspersky scan we did last night….do you think it is part of these files or is it something else I need to deal with. I showed my son your reply and he has promised me he will not be downloading anything else onto his computer. Thanks for your help in that and every other thing you have helped with.
