[Resolved] IE Popups

Hello, I know I have(had?) Vitruomonde and Darksma trojans as per my spyware checkers. I delete them but they come back on the next scan a few days later. I notice there has to be something wrong since when I use Internet Explorer, there are a bunch of pop-ups, and when I try to do a search for something in the google searchbar in IE or Firefox, nothing happens. I downloaded vundofix and now the search bar works in both IE and Firefox, but there are still pop-ups in IE. I have downloaded and used ATF Cleaner and Malwarebytes Anti Malware as per the instructions here, and I still have the pop-ups. Can you guys please help me out to make sure I still don't have any viruses, trojans, spyware, or what they? Thanks.

Please download RUNSCANNER to your desktop and run it.
  • When the first page comes up select Beginner Mode
  • On the next page select Save a binary .Run file (Recommended) then click Start full scan at the top.
  • At this time Runscanner.exe may request access to the Internet through your firewall please allow it to do so, it will then run for two or three minutes.
  • On completion it will ask for a location to save the file and a name. It will do this for both the .run file and the log
  • Call the file "Select a file name here" and save it to your desktop. You will see the .run file on your desktop. Please zip the .run file by right clicking and selecting send to Zip file

Then upload that as an attachment in your next post.

Download the zipped attachment at the end of this post(this will be your runscanner as fixed by me)

  • Unzip it to your desktop then double click the runscanner icon this will run the program.
  • Click on the "Item Fixer" tab
  • You will notice several entries with a tick in red, click Fix checked.
  • Accept the warning then repeat until they are all gone.



Reboot and do this

Please download Deckard's System Scanner (DSS) and save it to your Desktop.
  • Close all other windows before proceeding.
  • Double-click on dss.exe and follow the prompts.
  • If your anti-virus or firewall complains, please allow this script to run as it is not malicious.
  • When it has finished, dss will open two Notepads main.txt and extra.txt – please copy (CTRL+A and then CTRL+C) and paste (CTRL+V) the contents of main.txt and extra.txt in your next reply.

Hello

You have two firewalls, so you need to disable Windows firewall

1. Click Start, click Run, type Firewall.cpl, and then click OK.
2. On the General tab, click Off (not recommended), and then click OK.

This includes installing the Windows XP Recovery Console in case you have not installed it yet.

For more information on the Windows XP Recovery Console read http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314058.

Once you install the Recovery Console, when you reboot your computer, you'll see the option for the Recovery Console now as well. Don't select Recovery Console as we don't need it. By default, your main OS is selected there. The screen stays for 2 seconds and then it proceeds to load Windows. That is normal.

Post the log from ComboFix when you've accomplished that, along with a new HijackThis log.

1. Please re-open HiJackThis and choose do a system scan only. Check the boxes next to ONLY the entries listed below(if present):

2. Now close all windows other than HiJackThis, including browsers, so that nothing other than HijackThis is open, then click Fix Checked. A box will pop up asking you if you wish to fix the selected items. Please choose YES. Once it has fixed them, please exit/close HijackThis.




1. Close any open browsers.

2. Open notepad and copy/paste the text in the quotebox below into it:

  • The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
  • Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
  • Now click on Scan Settings
  • In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
    • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
    Extended (if available otherwise Standard)
    • Scan Options:
    Scan Archives
    Scan Mail Bases
  • Click OK
  • Now under select a target to scan:Select My Computer
  • This will program will start and scan your system.
  • The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
  • Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
    • Now click on the Save as Text button:
  • Save the file to your desktop.
  • Copy and paste that information in your next post.

  • Make sure you have an Internet Connection.
  • Download OTCleanIt to your desktop and run it

  • Click Yes to beging the Cleanup process and remove these components, including this application.

Below I have included a number of recommendations for how to protect your computer against malware infections.

* Keep Windows updated by regularly checking their website at :
http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/
This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer.

* To reduce re-infection for malware in the future, I strongly recommend installing these free programs:

SpywareBlaster protects against bad ActiveX
IE-SPYAD puts over 5000 sites in your restricted zone so you'll be protected when you visit innocent-looking sites that aren't actually innocent at all

* SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts. Make sure you are only running one real-time anti-spyware protection program or there will be a conflict.

Make Internet Explorer more secure
  • Click Start > Run
  • Type Inetcpl.cpl & click OK
  • Click on the Security tab
  • Click Reset all zones to default level
  • Make sure the Internet Zone is selected & Click Custom level
  • In the ActiveX section, set the first two options ("Download signed and unsigned ActiveX controls) to "Prompt", and ("Initialize and Script ActiveX controls not marked as safe") to "Disable".
  • Next Click OK, then Apply button and then OK to exit the Internet Properties page.

* MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well known ad sites and other bad sites. Basically, this prevents your computer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer, meaning it will be difficult to infect yourself in the future.

* Please consider using an alternate browser. Mozilla's Firefox browser is fantastic; it is much more
secure than Internet Explorer, immune to almost all known browser hijackers, and also has the best built-in pop up

Should I be uninstalling Runscanner, Deckard's, Kapersky's as well, or keeping these in case my computer gets infected again? In the Kapersky scan, it found 37 viruses. Should I be concerned about the rest? How will I get rid of the others besides the one file you mentioned to delete? I thought automatic updates in the bottom right task bar automatically updated. However, when I went into the windowsupdates.microsoft.com site you mentioned it found more updates, do you know why? Is there an anti-virus program you recomend as well? Now I'm just using my ISP's program.

Remove everything we used Kaspersky found stuff in your system restore, the final step will get rid of them. They are nothing to worry about anyway No idea about Window Updates issue I recommend Avira for anti-virus, it is very good Anything else ?

Nope nothing else, thank you very much. I'm not getting popups anymore and can do searches on the search bar on both browsers, and I feel my system will be very secure with the advice you gave. I'm going to finally switch to Firefox. I had always been using Netscape Navigator until they ended support for it March 1st and they asked to download Firefox. I couldn't do searches with Firefox, nor IE, so I let the problem linger and continued to use Netscape, but then my spyware kept on finding the same spyware, and finally decided to try to find out what I could do about it. Thanks again.
