This site is great in helping those that have been hijacked. I've recently had a problem with jksearch.biz hijacking my browser. And well, thank's to this site and its' previously posted topic's on the same matter, I was able to rid myself of that problem. Now I need help with what I hope to be my last problem (well at least for now).

I've been constantly having to run HJT on a daily basis and running into this windowws.cc. I check the box and click on "Fix Checked" and then it's gone, but only for awhile. A couple of times when opening the browser it still maintains the my original home page and what have you, but sooner or later it reverts back to this windowws.cc. What other steps must I do to remedy this dilemma?

HELP!

TIA…I appreciate any help!

Thanks for the reply expertec!

I did as requested and ran CWShredder. The little bugger is still there after running CWShredder, rebooting, and running HJT  . This CoolWebSearch Trojan (windowws.cc) is annoying to say the least, but so far at least it doesn't redirect to a XXX site.

Anymore suggestions on how I can go about getting rid of this problem???
Expertec??? Anyone???

Your time and efforts are very much appreciated expertec!
The CoolWebSearch variant or what have you seems to be escalating itself. There used to be two entries of the windowws.cc now there are four. I've tried to rid my machine of this by following the previously provided instruction, but it wasn't successful (however I do greatly appreciate expertecs time and efforts).

This is the recent logfile of HJT. I'm really in need of a solution to this and would be extremely greatful for any welcomed instruction and/or advice as to how to get rid of this.

PLEASE HELP!

Excuse me guys for joining in this one. Could you try something for me. Click here to download and install Registrar Lite. Install, run, copy and paste this line to reglite's address bar:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Windows\\AppInit_DLLs

and hit the "go" tab. Find: "Appinit_Dlls" value on the right side panel, DoubleClick, copy and post here the information in the 'Value' field.
Hey Daemon,

Thanks for taking a look. I've noticed that you've addressed a fairly large amount of posts with some great success. So, any help or insight that you may have to offer is more than welcome. Did I say thanks for a taking a look at the post?

Well as instructed I've downloaded the Registar Lite and ran the program. The information that you inquired about is included directly below.

This is the value that was retrieved from Reglite:
NVDESK32.DLL

I thought it was gonna be some long drawn out list of stuff, but that was what was in the value space.

If there's anything else that you need me to do, just ask and I'll be more than happy to do so. I'd love nothing more than to make sure this problem goes away. Well at least for as long as I can keep these types of annoyances away.

Daemon, thanks again!!!!!
Run Hijackthis again and fix these:

Then reboot the computer and delete the file C:\WINNT\sysupd.exe, and then post a new HJT log
Likelihood is, that after doing the fixes correctly identified by expertec, it'll come back - we need to get rid of the hijacker. Let's see that new HJT log and we'll take it from there.
Hey Daemon & expertec

Did as requested and fixed the listed in HijackThis and deleted the said file. Things seem to be on the up & up. Ran HJT once again and posted my latest logfile. I don't know if there's anything else in the logfile that might have had a part in hijacking my browser still appearing in the logfile.

I did change my values for the following: Default_Search_URL, Search Page, and Local Page in HKLM/Software/Microsoft/Internet Explorer/Main and HKCU/Software/Microsoft/Internet Explorer?Main. The value now reads, http://www.microsoft.com/isapi/redir.dll?prd=ie&ar;=iesearch. I just want to let you know everything that I'm doing, just in case anything I'm doing in addition to what you suggest might cause some sort of a set back on forward progress (hopefully it didn't…did it?).

Daemon & expertec all efforts and time put into helping me with this is greatly appreciated. You two have my utmost respect and gratitude. :)

THANK YOU TWO VERY MUCH!

OH…IS IT OKAY NOW? ARE WE OUT OF THE WOODS?

That looks much better, I'd say fix this one:

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {A9A674BF-771F-42E5-A440-D20DDA85A862} - (no file)

I'm worried about O4 - Global Startup: winlogin.exe, winlogon is legit, but winlogin is part of a virus, I'd say update your antivirus and do a full scan.
It's still there.

Click here to download TheKillbox by Option^Explicit. Extract it from the zip file then double-click on Killbox.exe to run it. Make sure the 'Create backup before deleting file' box is checked. In the 'Paste Full Path of File to Delete' box, copy and paste the following, clicking 'Kill File' after pasting each one:

C:\WINDOWS\image.dll
C:\WINDOWS\System32\sysstartup.exe

Click 'Exit' when done. Open TheKillbox again, click File, Open!Submit and you will see a folder bearing the date that you used TheKillbox - zip it up and send to this e-mail address including a link to this thread in the body of the email.

If you receive a message such as: "Component 'MsComCtl.ocx' or one of its dependencies not correctly registered: a file is missing or invalid." when trying to run TheKillbox, click here to download and run missingfilesetup.exe. Then try TheKillbox again.

Then go back into TheKillbox, paste in the following entry in the 'Paste Full Path of File to Delete' box:

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Startup\winlogin.exe

Don't click any of the buttons though, instead please click on the Action menu and choose "Delete on Reboot". In the window that opens up, click on the File menu and choose "Add File". The C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Startup\winlogin.exe listing should show up in the window. Then in the same window choose the Action menu and select "Process and Reboot". You'll be prompted to reboot, do so.

Open HijackThis, scan and when complete, remove the following entries (if still there) by checking the box to the left and clicking 'fixed checked':

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {A9A674BF-771F-42E5-A440-D20DDA85A862} - (no file)
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [jopa] C:\WINNT\system32\sysstartup.exe
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [uninstal] regsvr32 /u /s image.dll
O4 - Global Startup: winlogin.exe

Reboot when done. Rescan with HJT and post a new log.
Hey Daemon & Expertec, Thank's you two…you guys are great. This amount of help and service is so needed and greatly appreciated. Thank's! Out of town on business…I'll apply the suggested problem solutions as soon as I return (probably around thurs.). Didn't want to be rude after all the help. So it's just a little heads up (not that the problem is fixed and that I chose not to reply anymore or anything). I'll post the HJT logfile as soon as I can.
Hey Daemon & expertec,

Well after concluding my trip, it was back to business. I was able to follow the above suggestions as perfect as I could. The following files that you requested I delete in KillBox (C:\WINDOWS\System32\sysstartup.exe) said that the file didn't exist and as for the file which was to be Fix Checked in HJT (O4 - Global Startup: winlogin.exe) wasn't within the logfile. Instead I found this file - O4 - Global Startup: Microsoft Office.lnk = C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\OSA9.EXE. Is this a legit file?

I've included my most recent HJT Logfile after the fact and well hopefully we're still making even more forward progress. If there's anything more that I need to do, I'm at the ready. Just fire when ready!

I know you've heard a bunch from me already, but I really do greatly appreciate the time that you guys have set aside to help not only me, but others with similar dilemmas and hijacked computers.

Thanks again!!! :wavey:
