[Resolved] Please review HJT log

Hello,

I'm having major problems with my computer. It crashes, freezes and pages are slow loading. Some sites say my IP address has been banned - there should be no reason for this. When I am required to type what is shown to protect a site from spam it doesn't work no matter how many times I try. I've done the following:

1. Ran AVG - complete test - no infections
2. Ran Adaware - 67 privacy objects - adaware could not remove them.
3. Ran Bitdefender - update failed - ran it anyway - found two trojans and removed.
4. Ran HJT - log follows

Hello,

I've been unable to get rid of this virus. Its causing my computer to crash, operates slow, web pages load slow or not at all. AVG is clean. Adaware found 18 privacy objects that couldn't be removed. Kaspersky found one virus that is locked and couldn't be removed. Please review my HJT log. I've also included my logs from Ad-aware and Kaspersky. Thank you for your help.

Welcome to the Whatthetech Malware Removal Forum, sorry about the delay, but the amount of people posting with infected computers is through the roof and sometimes we can't get to logs as fast as we would like to. Please reply to this thread only by using the Add Reply and do not start a new topic or else we won't be on the same page.

Please download OTMoveIt2 by OldTimer.
  • Save it to your desktop.
  • Please double-click OTMoveIt.exe to run it.
  • Copy the file paths below to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose copy):

    C:\WINDOWS\Downloaded Program Files\popcaploader.dll

  • Return to OTMoveIt, right click on the "Paste List of Files/Folders to be moved" window and choose Paste.
  • Click the red Moveit! button.
  • Copy everything on the Results window to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose copy), and paste it on your next reply.
  • Close OTMoveIt
If a file or folder cannot be moved immediately you may be asked to reboot the machine to finish the move process. If you are asked to reboot the machine choose Yes.




Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from Here or Here

Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
  • Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
  • The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.<– Don't forget this
  • When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.(See Extra Note)
  • The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy and Paste the entire report in your next reply along with a New Hijackthis log.



Your version of HJT is outdated, drag it to the trash and download and install the latest version by Trendmicro.

Download Trendmicros Hijackthis to your desktop.
Double click it to install
Follow the prompts and by default it will install in C:\Program Files\Trendmicro\Hijackthis\Highjackthis.exe
  • Open HJT Scan and Save a Log File, it will open in Notepad
  • Go to Format and make sure Wordwrap is Unchecked
  • Go to Edit> Select All…..Edit > Copy and Paste the new log into this thread by using the Post Reply and not start a New Thread.
DO NOT have HijackThis fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.


I need to see the OTMoveIt log, the Malwarebytes log and a new HJT log please

Hello Ken,

Thank you very much for your response. Please find my logfiles below. My computer became unusable and I had to do a system restore yesterday. Now whenever I open a web page or email, Windows Installer window opens. Is that normal? Don't think I've seen that before.

Good Morning,

The windows installer is not normal and should not be running , Malwarebytes found some nasty stuff, lets go a bit further.

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune to your desktop.
  • This program is for XP and Windows 2000 only
  • Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
  • Under Main choose: Select All
  • Click the Empty Selected button.
Your system may start up slower after running ATF Cleaner, this is expected but will be back to normal after the first or second boot up




Download ComboFix from Here or Here to your Desktop.
  • Double click combofix.exe and follow the prompts.
  • When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post the Combofix log and a HiJackthis log in your next reply
Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while its running. That may cause it to stall

Good Morning,

I am now clicking the cancel button when the windows installer window opens, however I did not do that before I knew it wasn't normal. I ran ATF. I could not run combofix. I get an error that it's not a valid win32 application. That may be because I clicked cancel on the windows installer window. I'm not sure. Here is my new HJT log. Thanks so much.

Drag Combofix to the trash and download it again, don't mouse click on the installer, just let it run, I believe its because a Trojan was removed and still wants to install, its imperative that you run Combofix.


Download ComboFix from Here or Here to your Desktop.

In the event you already have Combofix, this is a new version that I need you to download.
It must be saved directly to your desktop.


1. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.
  • Temporarily disable your anti-virus, script blocking and any anti-malware real-time protection before performing a scan.
  • Click on this link to see a list of programs that should be disabled. The list is not all inclusive. If yours is not listed and you don't know how to disable it, please ask.
  • Remember to re enable the protection again afterwards before connecting to the net
2. Close any open browsers and make sure you are disconnected from the net. Unplug the cable if need be before running combofix.
  • IF you have not already done so Combofix will disconnect your machine from the Internet when it starts.
  • If there is no internet connection when Combofix has completely finished then restart your computer to restore back the connections.
3. Now double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
When finished, it will produce a report for you.
Please post the "C:\ComboFix.txt" along with a new HijackThis log for further review



If it still won't run then download it to your DESKTOP <– Important and run it in Safemode.

To Enter Safemode
  • Go to Start> Shut off your Computer> Restart
  • As the computer starts to boot-up, Tap the F8 KEY somewhat rapidly,
    this will bring up a menu.
  • Use the Up and Down Arrow Keys to scroll up to Safemode
  • Then press the Enter Key on your Keyboard

Hello again, I did run combofix and there were a few problems. While it was running a few errors ocurred: findstr.cfexe - application error The application failed to initialize properly (0x0000005). Click ok to terminate this application. I did click ok and the window repeated several times. Clicked ok several times and the application continued. Later another error message: CF12679.exe - application error ….. Same process as before. The scan finished and the computer restarted. A disk check was performed and the following things were written: \combofix\wsock_.dat First allocation unit not valid. This entry will be truncated. Documents and settings\Jeanne\local settings\temporary internet file\content.IE5. First allocation unit is not valid. This entry will be truncated. Convert lost chains to files (Y/N) Yes 112 KB in 8 recovered files The computer then continued to restart and this error message came up: System has recovered from a serious error. I never saw a logfile from combofix. When I tried to enable internet access the computer crashed. Did a disk check again and there was nothing noted. Got the message again: System has recovered from a serious error. Windows Installer window continues to pop up. My email doesn't seem to be working now. I'll keep refreshing this page to look for a new post. Thanks again

Hi, Just wanted you to know my email is working again. Had to disable email scanner in AVG after I started it up again after shutting it down to run combofix. Also, I deleted the Nero program. I read in another thread that it hosts some serious viruses. I don't use it so I don't care. I had previously deleted it, but it came back when I did a system restore the other day. Also deleted Quicktime - don't use it also. Thanks

  • Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
  • Now click on Scan Settings
  • In the scan settings make that the following are selected:

  • Scan Options:

  • Scan Mail Bases
  • Click OK
  • Now under select a target to scan: Select My Computer
  • This will program will start and scan your system.
  • The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.

  • Save the file to your desktop.

Hello, That header is the only thing that came up for combofix. I have a feeling that scan wasn't successfull with all the errors. Maybe I should run it again. Thanks

Drag Combofix to the trash and download a new copy as it updated almost everyday, make sure you follow this guide to disable any of these programs you may have running.

Download ComboFix from Here or Here to your Desktop.

In the event you already have Combofix, this is a new version that I need you to download.
It must be saved directly to your desktop.


1. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

  • Temporarily disable your anti-virus, script blocking and any anti-malware real-time protection before performing a scan.
  • Click on this link to see a list of programs that should be disabled. The list is not all inclusive. If yours is not listed and you don't know how to disable it, please ask.
  • Remember to re enable the protection again afterwards before connecting to the net


2. Close any open browsers and make sure you are disconnected from the net. Unplug the cable if need be before running combofix.
  • IF you have not already done so Combofix will disconnect your machine from the Internet when it starts.
  • If there is no internet connection when Combofix has completely finished then restart your computer to restore back the connections.

3. Now double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
When finished, it will produce a report for you.
Please post the "C:\ComboFix.txt" along with a new HijackThis log for further review

Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall or freeze.

Hello,

Here are the logfiles. I think my computer crashed during the first run of ComboFix. I thought ComboFix had restarted the computer. This scan went off without a problem. Continue to have the Windows Installer pop up.
