I had an Antispycheck infection. I followed instructions in the forum and used ATFcleaner and Malwarebytes Anti-malware. I also ran Kaspersky Online, and it found 2 things. thanks

Welcome to the Forums.

The fixes we will use are specific to your problems and should only be used for this issue on this machine.

Please only use this topic to reply to. Do not start another thread.
If any other issues arise let me know.
The process is not instant. Please continue to review my answers until I tell you your machine is clear. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear. So lets do this to the end!

  • Save and quit any work your doing before beginning the fix.
  • All hijackthis logs I ask for should be done in normal mode ( not safe mode)
  • These logs should be done last after you have followed my instructions in the previous post.

Please if you decide to seek help at another forum let us know. There is a shortage of helpers and tying 2 of us up is a waste of time.
If you have any questions about any advice given here please STOP and ask!

I see that you have AVG anti Virus installed. But I don't see it running at the moment this log was taken . Why ?

RUN HJT

HJT
Run hijackthis and choose scan only and place a check by the following lines if present.
Close all other windows and browsers except HJT before clicking on Fix Checked

Download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri) to your Desktop.
Smitfraud by S!ri

  • Double clcik the smitfraud.exe
  • When promted
    Press any key to continue.
  • Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press Enter
This program will scan large amounts of files on your computer for known patterns so please be patient while it works. When it is done, the results of the scan will be displayed and it will create a log named rapport.txt in the root of your drive, eg: Local Disk C: or partition where your operating system is installed. Please post that log along with any others I have asked for in your next reply.

Note : process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool"; it is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user. When prompted by allow it to run

IMPORTANT: Do NOT run any other options until you are asked to do so!
If you do and smitfraud isn't present it will have undesirable effects

In your next reply I would like to see:
  • A new HJT log
  • The report from Smitfraud (Rapport.txt}
Thank you for the response. This is my friends computer, so I don't know the history. I do not see AVG in the start menu. Another symptom: Firefox search bar is hijacked by something called yanga.us

Now we need to fix AVG anti Virus. It doesn't seem to be running.
I realize this isn't your machine but if your to help fix it we need to know a few things.

Was this purchased this over the internet or is this the free version?

Check in add remove programs to see if they have a repair option. If so run that and restart the machine.

If not we may have to download a new version and install it. But we will need to remove the old one first.
Please let me know how that goes.

In your next reply I would like to see:
  • A new HJT log
  • Let me know if Mozilla has cleared up.
  • Let me know about AVG anti Virus.
I think yanga.us is gone.

I asked the owner, and she has no recollection of buying AVG. There is no indication of AVG in Add /Remove Programs, nor any other security software. I was curious why Windows Security Center wasn't giving an alert, and it says Virus Protection is Authentium Antivirus?

Thank you for the continued assistance.

We can see AVG 7 was/is installed at some point.

Now you mentioned that Windows is warning you about Authentium anti virus. This is another Anti Virus program that I see no signs of.

I'm going to need some more info before proceeding.

____________________________________
Navigate to and let me know if the following folders exsist on this system.

c:/Program Files /Grisoft

C:\Program Files\Authentium

Inside each of these folders will be more files and folders.
Look around in each and see if they have an uninstall icon.
Please do not run it yet for either.

______________________________
Open HJT

this time click on
Misc tools section

then:
Open uninstall Manager
click on save list.
Save it somewhere convienint
Post that for me.

______________________________
Make a new folder on your desktop. Call it reg finder

Download Reg Finder
Extract the files to that folder on the desktop you just created..
Go into that folder and double click RegFinder.vbs.
If any of your software gives you a warning about running this just allow it. It's safe.
Type in Grisoft into the text field that appears and hit enter.
Again… Some protection software may probably flag the script…
just let it run.
It will let you know when its done and a log should pop up ..

You need to save this first file as Grisoft.txt.

If it doesn't there will be a file in the folder called results.txt
Post that for me.

I then want you to do the exact same thing. This time in the field type in
Authentium.

Save this file as Authentium.txt

  • The uninstall list from HJT
  • The 2 reports from reg Finder.
c:/Program Files /Grisoft exists, but I don't see an uninstall. C:\Program Files\Authentium does not exist. I had trouble with Reg Finder. I got it installed, but get an error after double clicking on RegFinder.vbs. See attachment. Thank you. One last question before I start the removal.

Can you see an icon for AVG in the tool bar at all ?

____________________________-
Navigate to this folder

C:\\Program Files\\Common Files\\Authentium

Let me know what other folders or files are inside them.

Please download one of these just to be ready. DO NOT install it yet. Having 2 anti virus programs will only complicate things.

Save as File type "all files" NOT TXT DOCUMENT

Once saved double click the file you just made and when asked to merge with the registry click yes.

Now delete that file.

Now double click this file, you won't see much happen.
A quick flash is about all.
Then you may delete the file we just made.

  • Is this machine used for businsess by your company or where your employed ?
Everything seemed to go fine. Avast found 4 viruses. Avast gave several errors of files it couldn't access; which mostly seemed to be under Spybot Search & Destroy. I am installing memory tonight, so hopefully that will speed things up. This is a friend's personal computer.

 Were almost there, just want to be sure Avast didn't find anything we missed.

It's been a long time since I have used AVast.
I would like you to see if you can view a log report and copy it for me.
If not I will ask around to see how to view a log report from AVAST.
More than likely there are some things caught by Spybot that need to be cleared.

Open spybot search and destroy.
  • Click on recovery
  • Remove anything in there by placing a check mark by all items.
  • Click on purge selected items

I see that Viewpoint is installed.

Viewpoint, Viewpoint Manager, Viewpoint Media Player are Viewpoint components which are installed as a side effect of installing other software, most notably AOL and AOL Instant Messenger (AIM). Viewpoint Manager is responsible for managing and updating Viewpoint Media Player’s components. Viewpoint Manager is considered as foistware instead of malware since it is installed without user's approval but doesn't spy or do anything "bad". In 2006, this may change, read Viewpoint to Plunge Into Adware.

I suggest you remove the program now. Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs and remove the following programs if present:
  • Viewpoint
  • Viewpoint Manager
  • Viewpoint Media Player
If AOL is present, to prevent it from being recreated every time you run the AOL software:
  • Open AOL
  • Go to Help on the toolbar
  • Select About AOL
  • Hit Ctrl D and a secret panel can be accessed which will allow you to disable all desktop and IM features associated with Viewpoint.
Another way to prevent Viewpoint from being recreated every time you run the AOL software is:
  • Click C:\Program Files\AOL 9.0\Jiti (a hidden folder).
  • Rename viewpoint.exe to viewpoint.old.
This is the item to fix in HijackThis.

In your next reply I would like to see:
  • The report from AVAST
  • Things seem to be running OK ?
Under spybot Program folder, there is no spybot.exe or other program file. The folder is full and the uninstaller is there, however. Seems to be running ok. The error log for AVAST is large, so I will post as attachment.
