Guys i dunno what happened, the computer got struck up (and went blank) when i was in the middle of something (i had firefox and IE open) and hdmi cable was connected, i have vista and intel core 2 duo processor. restarted using the start/stop button, then firefox wouldnt open, n got a msg that it stopped working then restarted again so it boots up n then does disk checking n theres a long list of some kind of repairs n then the computer is in the process of starting up, remains so for like 10 mins and i use the on/off button again to restart it. i got the option of starting windows in the repair mode, it then checked (prolly also repaired) and it restarted the computer. then after this restart the computer looks fine….even firefox appears to work fine. then the black bar(the one which is in the bottom, and on which u can minimise windows) flickers a little to white color and gets back to normal and i get this msg "Host services for windows stopped working & was closed". the computer still does seem to work fine but i'm scared, looks like its unpredictable, anything can happen to it :(
by the way i had norton 360 which expired today - it is no longer working.i have no other firewall/antivirus. do u think its because of tht?

well right now as i am typing this, firefox has stopped working again :(

any help will be greatly appreciated. thank u.

UPDATE June 26:
Downloaded Avast and did complete system scans using it. it detected a couple of trojans….and the system would freeze soon as we would reach 81% of scanning. so i did the rest of the scans(? like 2-3 times) in the safe mode. But couldnt remove/delete the trojans though.
These are the entries i got at one of the scans:

Name of file………………………………………………………………….
……..Infection…………………………………………………Operat
i
on
c:\\windows\installer…\icon.ARPRODUCTICON.exe……win32:spyware-gen[trj] …….Error occurred during moving file to chest:the operation is not supported for this type of archive

c:\\windows\system32\igmedkrn.dll……………….Unable to scan:The system cannot read from the
specified device

For the first entry, when i tried deleting or repairing it, it said 'unable to delete/repair'
the 2nd one was successfully deleted.

UPDATE June 27:
I was browsing using IE and suddenly many IE windows open up one after the other with my homepage (thats http://www.toshibadirect.com/dpdstart)….they went on opening faster than I could close them….then I had to end the task using Windows task manager (and in it, it showed that there were two processes by the name iexplore).
Hello

Please download Deckard's System Scanner (DSS) and save it to your Desktop.
  • Close all other windows before proceeding.
  • Double-click on dss.exe and follow the prompts.
  • If your anti-virus or firewall complains, please allow this script to run as it is not malicious.
  • When it has finished, dss will open two Notepads main.txt and extra.txt – please copy (CTRL+A and then CTRL+C) and paste (CTRL+V) the contents of main.txt and extra.txt in your next reply.

Please do an online scan with Kaspersky WebScanner

  • The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
  • Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
  • Now click on Scan Settings
  • In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
    • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
    Extended (if available otherwise Standard)
    • Scan Options:
    Scan Archives
    Scan Mail Bases
  • Click OK
  • Now under select a target to scan:Select My Computer
  • This will program will start and scan your system.
  • The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
  • Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
    • Now click on the Save as Text button:
  • Save the file to your desktop.
  • Copy and paste that information in your next post.
Hi Rorschach, sorry about my manners, when i posted the topic i did it in such a hurry (cuz my system was freezing) that i wanted to make sure that it is posted before something goes wrong with the system that makes me unable to post. what i want you to know here is that, I installed spybot after installing avast.and it is running. so can i do all these scans w/o spybot creating any problems or do i need to turn off spybot/tea timer to run the scans? plz let me know. In the meantime i'll try dowloading and running those scans. thanks.

I did the kaspersky scan, but whenever i'm trying to save the report (whether as text or as html) it is not saving on the location i choose, whether or desktop or anywhere else. i'm getting a prompt that 'for your computer's asfety this file is being saved in the temporary internet files folder" , "do you want to open this folder" and i get 'yes' 'no' buttons, so i click yes but there seems to be some folder which opens up(which contains many othert sub folders) but it doesnt contaiin the file that i saved, even after i search in the computer i dont find it anywhere.
This is your problem

Windows Internal Firewall is enabled.

FW: Norton 360 v2007 (SYMANTEC Corporation)
AV: Norton 360 v2007 (SYMANTEC Corperation)
AV: avast! antivirus 4.8.1201 [VPS 080630-1] v4.8.1201 (ALWIL Software)

You can only have one firewall and one anti-virus running

You need to disable Windows firewall and remove one of those anti-virus programs

Tell me how that goes

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from Here or Here

Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
  • Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
  • The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.(See Extra Note)
  • The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy&Paste the entire report in your next reply.
Extra Note:
If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process,if asked to restart the computer, please do so immediatly.
hi Rorschach,

thanks for all your help.

i just cant seem to progress from step 1 :(
it took a lot of time for norton progress bar to come this far but now it seems struck up since 2 hours.

[external image: Posted Image]

do u think i shud just go ahead with the malwarebyte thingy and leave norton to itself? or wait for it to go away. I was having norton 360 subsciption but now its expired since 4-5 days back. do u think thats why its causing a problem?

I turned off windows firewall successfully though.

1. It appears as though there are no problems left. But I did see trojans being detected by avast 3-4 days earlier. It could be that avast already cleared those up…..but i'm just assuming things, i do need to know what happened though, because i did see trojans.
2. plus Deckard's scanner installed hijack this on my desktop, do i need to use it or post a log? or just delete it?
3. another thing is that sometimes the laptop mouse(the one which comes attached witht the laptop) is freezing, so i am not able to move it or use it, instead i'm having to use the tab key and the enter key, and the computer and the rest of the stuff is working just fine.Could it be that some virus/trojan is affecting the drivers for the mouse??
4. Also i'm not able to watch videos on the laptop though i can hear the sounds. The videos in question are played on windows media player, and though i have updated the driver for it and alos installed pending windows updates, it still doesnt work.

Awaiting your help. thanks in advance.
Download and run the Norton Removal tool to be sure it is gone

http://service1.symantec.com/Support/tsgen…005033108162039

Your logs are clean, you don't have malware

Your problems are 100% due to a security conflict.

Below I have included a number of recommendations for how to protect your computer against malware infections.

* Keep Windows updated by regularly checking their website at :
http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/
This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer.

* To reduce re-infection for malware in the future, I strongly recommend installing these free programs:

SpywareBlaster protects against bad ActiveX
IE-SPYAD puts over 5000 sites in your restricted zone so you'll be protected when you visit innocent-looking sites that aren't actually innocent at all
Have a look at this tutorial for IE-Spyad here

* SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts. Make sure you are only running one real-time anti-spyware protection program or there will be a conflict.

Make Internet Explorer more secure
  • Click Start > Run
  • Type Inetcpl.cpl & click OK
  • Click on the Security tab
  • Click Reset all zones to default level
  • Make sure the Internet Zone is selected & Click Custom level
  • In the ActiveX section, set the first two options ("Download signed and unsigned ActiveX controls) to "Prompt", and ("Initialize and Script ActiveX controls not marked as safe") to "Disable".
  • Next Click OK, then Apply button and then OK to exit the Internet Properties page.

* MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well known ad sites and other bad sites. Basically, this prevents your computer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer, meaning it will be difficult to infect yourself in the future.

* Please consider using an alternate browser. Mozilla's Firefox browser is fantastic; it is much more
secure than Internet Explorer, immune to almost all known browser hijackers, and also has the best built-in pop up
blocker (as an added benefit!) that I have ever seen. If you are interested, Firefox may be downloaded from

* Take a good look at the following suggestions for malware prevention by reading Tony Klein’s article 'How Did I Get Infected In The First Place'

Thank you for your patience, and performing all of the procedures requested.
Hi Rorschach

I used the Norton removal tool, uninstalled java too, but not able to download JRE. This is the error i get:

Get the latest Java Runtime Environment to use Sun Download Manager

Internet Explorer Users: Check the top of this page for a "Java™ Web Start ActiveX Control" message in the information bar. If it appears, click it to finish detecting your Java version.

We were unable to detect a recent version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) on your system. With the latest JRE, you can automatically download, install, and run Sun Download Manager (SDM) directly from this page. We highly recommend SDM to easily manage your downloads (pause, resume, restart, verify, and more). Visit java.com for the latest JRE.

Instructions: Select the files you want, then click the "Download Selected with Sun Download Manager" (SDM) button below to automatically install and use SDM (learn more). Alternately, click directly on file names to download with your browser. (Use of SDM is recommended but not required.)

Required Files Your download should start automatically.
If not, click the file link below.

Sun Download Manager(SDM) installation should begin automatically.
Once it is running, click Start to download the product.
If your system does not support SDM, click the file link below to download.
(For help with SDM, see SDM Troubleshooting.)

File Description and Name Size
Windows Offline Installation
jre-6u6-windows-i586-p.exe 15.21 MB
Windows Online Installation
jre-6u6-windows-i586-p-iftw.exe 0.36 MB

There are some 2 files mentioned. will it solve the problem if i download those two? sorry to keep asking for every small matter, but i dont want to go ahead without consulting you and mess it all up from my side….
Hi downloaded that, double clicked it, that installed java in my system. well then i went to livechat in this forum (just to check if java is working fine), so it loaded up well. Going ahead with the next step. Thanks for your help.
I just did the restart after OTCleanit asked me to, and then i got the following error in the startup.

Windows failed to start.A recent hardware or software change might be the cause.

Launch startup repair (recommended) ……and this was highlighted
Start windows normally ……I selected this one

Plus i noticed one more thing, after the installation of java whenever i would open the IE window , two of them would open, like the same 2 windows with all the same tabs.
Yes it seems to be fine apart from that. I even was able to start up in a normal way, use the computer, messengers n all, even though i selected 'start windows normally' and not in the repair mode.
