I am running a Dell of some sort with Intel Pentium 4 processor and Windows XP with all the updates. Sorry for the lack of info, this is my work computer.

About a week ago, the computer became plagued with pop-ups and running slow to the point of non-functionality. I've run other virus/spyware/malware/pop-up scans but none seem to finish the job. From what they have told me, Trojan.Vundo appears to be a culprit but that might not be all of the problem. The POP-UPS are driving me INSANE. Please help. This is my log:

Rename HijackThis
There is a possibility an infection which is hiding part of the HijackThis log because it's called hijackthis.exe.
Using Windows Explore by right-clicking the Start button and left clicking Explore navigate to: C:\Program Files\HijackThis\HijackThis.exe

Right-click on HijackThis.exe & select Rename to iseeu.exe and post back a new Hijackthis log.
Done. Here is the new log:

Hi

If you already have Combofix, please delete this copy and download it again as it's being updated regularly.

Please visit this webpage for download links, and instructions for running the tool:

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix

Please ensure you read this guide carefully and install the Recovery Console first.

The Windows Recovery Console will allow you to boot up into a special recovery (repair) mode. This allows us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware. It is a simple procedure that will only take a few moments of your time.

Once Recovery Console is installed, you should see a blue screen prompt like the one below:

[external image: Posted Image]

Click Yes to allow Combofix to continue scanning for malware.

When done, a log will be produced. Please post that log and a new HijackThis log in your next reply.

1.Do not mouse-click Combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
2. ComboFix may reset a number of Internet Explorer's settings, including making I-E the default browser.
3. Combofix prevents autorun of ALL CD, floppy and USB devices to assist with malware removal & increase security. If this is an issue or makes it difficult for you – please tell your helper.
4. CF disconnects your machine from the internet. The connection is automatically restored before CF completes its run. If CF runs into difficulty and terminates prematurely, the connection can be manually restored by restarting your machine.

New HijackThis log taken after the above scan has run
I went through the steps you suggested and I came to a prompt which stated "1/100 computers will not make it through the disinfection process" in Combofix. Is there any other way of doing this, because this computer has medical information which people's lives depend on (I work in a group home for mentally ill people). Should I not be afraid of this prompt?
Hi There is always the possibility of problems, though I have not had any yet. We can do it more manually, which will take longer, and again there are no gaurantees of an error or that we get everything. What we do do is leave System restore in place and the Recovery Console is installed for extra backup if needed. The infection you have doesnt appear to be too bad to cause any problems. I will leave the choice to you.
Hi, sorry for the time delay, I wasn't at work for the weekend. I decided to run ComboFix and everything went smoothly. This is my ComboFix log followed by my new HijackThis log from immediately after. Thanks for your help so far.

Hi

Remember to disconnect from the Internet before carrying out the next instruction, and to save the following script before you do.You must
also manually disable your anti-virus and anti-spyware programs. See the link below for instructions on doing this.

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic114351.html

Open Notepad - it must be Notepad, not Wordpad.
Copy the text below in the code box by highlighting all the text with your mouse and pressing Ctrl+C

File::
C:\WINDOWS\system32\gsvbgttl.ini
C:\WINDOWS\system32\lttgbvsg.dll

Refering to the picture above, drag CFScript into ComboFix.exe

Please go to Kaspersky website and perform an online antivirus scan.

  • Read through the requirements and privacy statement and click on Accept button.
  • It will start downloading and installing the scanner and virus definitions. You will be prompted to install an application from Kaspersky. Click Run.
  • When the downloads have finished, click on Settings.
  • Make sure these boxes are checked (ticked). If they are not, please tick them and click on the Save button:
    • Spyware, Adware, Dialers, and other potentially dangerous programs
      Archives
      Mail databases
  • Click on My Computer under Scan.
  • Once the scan is complete, it will display the results. Click on View Scan Report.
  • You will see a list of infected items there. Click on Save Report As….
  • Save this report to a convenient place. Change the Files of type to Text file (.txt) before clicking on the Save button.
  • Please post this log in your next reply.

Once you have installed the Scanner, and the updated definitions, you can disconnect from the Internet and disable your anti-virus, to reduce scanning time. Re-enable the anti-virus before reconnecting to the Internet.
Instructions on disabling a variety of security programs can be found at the link below.

Go to http://virusscan.jotti.org
Copy the following line into the white textbox:
C:\Program Files\setup.ini
Click Submit.
Please post the results of this scan to this thread.

Do the same for this file::
C:\Program Files\setup.exe

If Jotti is busy or unavailable, please try
Virustotal

In your next reply post:

New HijackThis log taken after the above scan has run
Here is the combofix log followed by the kaspersky scan, the jotti scans and the most recent hijack this log.
The pop-ups have definitely decreased, I don't want to jinx myself and say "stopped forever."

Thanks for your help. Is my computer clean now?

Hi

Congratulations, you appear to be malware free. :woot:

Time for some housekeeping
  • Click START then RUN
  • Now type Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK. Note the space between the x and the /u, it needs to be there.

Malwarebytes Anti-Malware is a good program to keep. If you wish to keep it, use it to do a quick scan once a week and keep it updated.
Remember, only the paid for version offers real-time protection

Here is another couple of free programs I recommend.

Winpatrol
Winpatrol is heuristic protection program, meaning it looks for patterns in codes that work like malware. It also takes a snapshot of your system's critical resources and alerts you to any changes that may occur without you knowing. You can read more about Winpatrol's features here.

You can get a free copy of Winpatrol or use the Plus version for more features.

You can read Winpatrol's FAQ if you run into problems.

Spyware Blaster
SpywareBlaster is a program that is used to secure Internet Explorer by making it harder for ActiveX programs to run on your computer. It does this by disabling known offending ActiveX programs from running at all.

You can download SpywareBlaster from Javacool.

If you need help in using SpywareBlaster, you can read SpywareBlaster's tutorial at Bleeping Computer.

Hosts File
A Hosts file is like a phone book. You look up someone's name in the phone book before calling him/her. Similarly, your PC will look up the website's IP address before you can view the website.

Hosts file will replace your current Hosts file with another one containing well-known advertisement sites, spyware sites and other bad sites. This new Hosts file will protect you by re-directing these bad sites to 127.0.0.1.

Here is a good Hosts file:

MVPS Hosts File

A tutorial about Hosts File can be found at Malware Removal.

Make sure your Windows is ALWAYS up to date!

An unpatched Windows is vulnerable and even with the "best" Antivirus and Firewall installed, malware will find its way through.
So visit http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/ to download and install the latest updates.

Update your Antivirus programs and other security products regularly to avoid new threats that could infect your system.

Please check out Tony Klein's article "How did I get infected in the first place?"

Here is some great information from experts in this field that will help you stay clean and safe online.
http://forum.malwareremoval.com/viewtopic.php?t=14

Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.

I'd be grateful if you could reply to this post so that I know you have read it and, if you've no other questions, the thread can be closed.
