As far as I know every day for months, maybe years my anti-spyware program "Spyware Doctor" pops up a window saying that my scan is complete and infections have been found. My guess is that the lowest number has been 35 and it may have gone above 100 or more on any given day. When I open the program for it to remove the infections it lists 3 categories of infections. The vast majority are always low level but a few times there has been one listed as a "high level" threat. I think that means it could be a trojan or something along those lines.
I think it does an "intelligent scan" where it looks in the most likely places. I've occasionally done a full scan afterwards and occasionally it will find another infection or two or three, but I believe they've always been of the low threat level variety.
I believe it was a few days ago that the scan showed zero infections for the first time. I was suspicious of that and did a full scan but it too showed zero infections. The next day the same thing happened. and the next …
That had never happened before, and now it's been 3 or 4 days or so in a row and has certainly raised my suspicions that something might be wrong.
I think that happened the 1st time a day or two before I downloaded Firefox's newest version 3.0 browser, but I'm not absolutely sure of it. I suppose there's a possibility that Firefox's security enhancements have suddenly eliminated picking up the spyware, but I'd certainly like an informed opinion to verify that. Firefox is my main browser, but I do have to use IE on occasion.
In any event I downloaded Hijack This and let it do its scan. I've done that on another computer years ago and just had it automatically fix everything. That may not have been so smart, however, now that I've read the directions.

=====================
This is getting curiouser and curiouser.
Now, it just popped up a scan as back to normal. (see screenshot image of scan) 67 infections, some of which were an browser hijack/affiliated with browser hijackers.
Online screenshot of the latest Spyware Doctor scan results:
http://www.imagepile.net/index.php?page=vi…ware.report.jpg
It makes me wonder why it had come up blank for several days with no infections and now all of a sudden it's back to normal. Well sort of. That is a typical number of infections per day, but the elevated risk ones are not very common.
My kids visit mini-clip, (which as affiliated with the browser hijacker program) but I don't and haven't let them use my computer. They have an older one they can use. I don't think any of them snuck on here, but I guess it's theoretically possible.
One possibility might be that I had used Firefox in "safe mode" today. I use their No-script extension which would not have been functional in the safe mode which does not start any extensions. But I've had No-script for a long time. Maybe some new update to it stopped all of the infections I had normally been getting?
Also, my wife got on this computer today and logged in as herself. I think she usually uses Internet Explorer and maybe that let the infections start again? This would assume that Firefox 3.0 had fixed whatever problems allowed the prior infections.
Or maybe someone had been able to watch what I was doing and noticed I posted this on here and then they decided to re-enable Spyware Doctor again?
This is all just kind of weird to me. Not sure what's going on. Sorry for all the confusion.
=============
As a side note, I neglected to mention that my computer has tended to really bog down and lock up at times, especially when using Firefox and particularly when using Google within Firefox. I was hoping the Firefox 3 upgrade would fix all of that. But it was not exclusive to Firefox. It also happened with Internet Explorer.
BTW, I have 1 Gig of Ram.
I often use Process Explorer (dubbed Taskmanager on Steroids) to try and keep tabs on what's going on with memory. When it locks up I can usually still toggle over to Process Explorer and see that it is Firefox (or occasionally IE) that was locking it up. It would often resolve itself if I waited long enough, but sometimes I'd have to use Process Explorer to minimize the Firefox windows (it would do so when I couldn't minimize them normally). It might still take awhile but usually the windows would minimize and I'd be back in business for awhile. But it was likely to lock up again, sometimes fairly quickly.
Today it has been running fairly smoothly for some reason with no lockups. It's almost like someone was messing with it, saw I was trying to rid it of infections and then let loose of it.
=================
6-23-08 - The last couple of days it's gone back to Zero infections detected from Spyware Doctor. That's still *very* unusual, as in it had never happened prior to the last week or so. Then it got the "normal" double digit infections one day, and now back to zero. I'm not sure if the day it jumped back to "normal" might have been someone else getting on my computer. Another possibility is that I had used Firefox in "safe mode" that day which would have disable the "No-Script" Firefox extension. That extension gets pretty frequent updates and maybe one of the updates suddenly made Firefox immune to the normal tracking cookies etc.?
