[Resolved] Random IE Windows

When one first logs into the computer and goes to IE and searches - with any search engine, everything is fine. After a couple of minutes, what is labeled in the title bar as an IE window is created going to whatever website it wants. This window has no menu bar no controls other that the 1 control in the upper left and the 3 in the upper right. This window can be closed by the right most red X or the close option on the title bar. After this happens, if I open another browser window, I get to my home page ok, but attempts to go anywhere else go nowhere. IE's progress bar, at the bottom of the window, never exceeds 50%. Other random IE windows, missing controls, pop up from time to time after that.

I ran XoftSpySE and clean up what it found. I also ran AVG (8.0) and had it cleaned up what if found. The problem still exists.

Please download Deckard's System Scanner (DSS) and save it to your Desktop.
  • Close all other windows before proceeding.
  • Double-click on dss.exe and follow the prompts.
  • If your anti-virus or firewall complains, please allow this script to run as it is not malicious.
  • When it has finished, dss will open two Notepads main.txt and extra.txt – please copy (CTRL+A and then CTRL+C) and paste (CTRL+V) the contents of main.txt and extra.txt in your next reply.




Please do an online scan with Kaspersky WebScanner

Click on Kaspersky Online Scanner and click Accept

You will be prompted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.
  • The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
  • Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
  • Now click on Scan Settings
  • In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
    • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
    Extended (if available otherwise Standard)
    • Scan Options:
    Scan Archives
    Scan Mail Bases
  • Click OK
  • Now under select a target to scan:Select My Computer
  • This will program will start and scan your system.
  • The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
  • Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
    • Now click on the Save as Text button:
  • Save the file to your desktop.
  • Copy and paste that information in your next post.

This includes installing the Windows XP Recovery Console in case you have not installed it yet.

For more information on the Windows XP Recovery Console read http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314058.

Once you install the Recovery Console, when you reboot your computer, you'll see the option for the Recovery Console now as well. Don't select Recovery Console as we don't need it. By default, your main OS is selected there. The screen stays for 2 seconds and then it proceeds to load Windows. That is normal.

Post the log from ComboFix when you've accomplished that, along with a new HijackThis log.

Note: ComboFix did not ask about installing the recovery console. The documentation for ComboFix, implied that it would fire me to a site to download and install it. That did not happen. Also, when ComboFix did a reboot, I did not see a Recovery Console option. Not sure if this is/was a problem. I am running XP SP2 and quite probably the latest MS patches. Thought I should mention it.

I did a system scan and save log file.

When I attempted to log off, I could not really log off, instead I had to stand on the reboot button to shutdown the machine. After rebooting, logging, and bouncing about on Web, I could successfully log off. Again, thought I should mention it. And, cruising the Web was faster and I did not encounter the issues from yesterday.

2. Open notepad and copy/paste the text in the quotebox below into it:

Save this as CFScript.txt, in the same location as ComboFix.exe

Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from Here or Here

Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
  • Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
  • The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.(See Extra Note)
  • The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy&Paste the entire report in your next reply.
Extra Note:
If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove,you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts,click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process,if asked to restart the computer,please do so immediatly.
