My computer has been acting strangely in the last couple of days. It is taking forever to open programs and to save files. When I try to minimize a window, it freezes for a time and then eventually comes back to life. It is taking longer and longer to move between programs. I would really appreciate any suggestions.

Hi chocohoic,

Please download F-Secure Blacklight to your Desktop (right-click the link, select Save Target As..., select your Desktop and press Save)
  • Double click fsbl.exe to run it, choose I accept the agreement then press Scan
  • It will create the fsbl-xxxxxxx.log on your desktop containing a list of all items found.
  • Do not choose to rename any because legitimate items can also be present.
  • Exit Blacklight and post the contents of the log in your next reply.

Download Deckard's System Scanner (DSS) to your Desktop (right-click the link, select Save Target As..., select your Desktop and press Save)
  • Close all applications and windows.
  • Double-click on dss.exe to run it, and follow the prompts.
  • When the scan is complete, two text files will open - main.txt <- this one will be maximized and extra.txt<-this one will be minimized
  • Make sure Format->Word Wrap is unchecked
  • Copy (Ctrl+A then Ctrl+C) and paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of main.txt and extra.txt in your reply

Once complete, please post the Blacklight report and both DSS logs, you won't need to produce a new HijackThis log as DSS produces one for you.

Hi chocohoic,

Please open Start->Control Panel->Add/Remove Programs, and remove the following:

Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2_03
JavaT 6 Update 3
JavaT 6 Update 5

These are out of date and now a security risk, you can get the latest update (Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 6) from here

You have Viewpoint Media Player installed on your system. This program is not malware but it is foistware in that it is usually installed without the user's knowledge or approval, and for this reason I recommend you remove it. If you actually use this program, I recommend you try using safe and free alternatives such as VLC Media Player.
Viewpoint Media Player can be removed via Add/Remove Programs

Please click this link to open Kaspersky Online Scanner:
http://www.kaspersky...kavwebscan.html

Press on the Accept button and install any components it needs.
  • The program will install and then begin downloading the latest definition files.
  • After the files have been downloaded on the left side of the page in the Scan section select My Computer
  • This will start the program and scan your system.
  • The scan will take a while, so be patient and let it run.
  • Once the scan is complete, click on View scan report
  • Click on the Save Report As... button.
  • Change the file type to Text file (*.txt), type a filename such as kaspersky and save it to your Desktop
  • Post the contents of the report in your next response.

Once complete, please post the Kaspersky report and a new HijackThis log.
Also, describe how your computer is running now.

Hi chocohoic,

Download ATF Cleaner by Atribune to your Desktop
Check the box marked Select All, then un-check Cookies (unless you want to clean these as well)
Click the Empty Selected button.
Note: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt
Press Exit to close the program

You have several infected emails in the inboxes of your email programs, one of which is Thunderbird, this is the relevant information from the Kaspersky report:

C:\Documents and Settings\Dinah Hulet\Application Data\Thunderbird\Profiles\36ge7du3.default\Mail\pop.dinahhulet-7.com\Inbox.sbd\Purchases Infected: Trojan-PSW.Win32.Papras.ad 1
C:\Mail\pop.dinahhulet-1.com\Inbox Infected: Trojan-Spy.HTML.Paylap.bg 1
C:\Mail\pop.dinahhulet-1.com\Inbox Suspicious: Trojan-Spy.HTML.Fraud.gen 2
C:\Mail\pop.dinahhulet-1.com\Inbox Infected: Trojan-Spy.HTML.Bankfraud.bk 1
C:\Mail\pop.dinahhulet-1.com\Inbox Infected: Trojan-Spy.HTML.Wamufraud.x 1
C:\Mail\pop.dinahhulet-1.com\Inbox Infected: Trojan-Spy.HTML.Bankfraud.cr 1

I recommend you clean your inboxes and do not open any mails that have not been received from personal contacts.
The Thunderbird email appears to have a password-stealing trojan attached, I can't tell whether it's been active or not, but I recommend you consider this advice I give to anyone infected with this type of malware:

It appears that your computer has been infected by a password-stealing trojan. If you use this computer for sensitive purposes, such as internet banking then you should immediately use a known clean machine to change all your passwords. Also consider notifying your bank(s) etc that your login credentials may have been compromised.

You should now delete dss.exe, ATF-Cleaner.exe and fsbl.exe from your Desktop, also delete this folder:

C:\Deckard

Create a new, clean System Restore point which you can use in case of future system problems:
Press Start->All Programs->Accessories->System Tools->System Restore
Select Create a restore point, then Next, type a name like All Clean then press the Create button and once it's done press Close

Now remove old, infected System Restore points:
Next click Start->Run and type cleanmgr in the box and press OK
Ensure the boxes for Recycle Bin, Temporary Files and Temporary Internet Files are checked, you can choose to check other boxes if you wish but they are not required.
Select the More Options tab, under System Restore press Clean up... and say Yes to the prompt
Press OK and Yes to confirm

------------------------------------------------------------------------

If the above went well, your machine looks to be clean of malware, so if you are still experiencing problems I think the best way to resolve it is to ask for help from the Tech Team in the Microsoft Windows forum here at What the Tech - the experts there specialize in this type of problem so you will be in good hands.

Here are some tips to help you keep your computer clean:

You have a good antivirus package installed, however I recommend you install specialist antispyware software with real-time capabilities - this means it protects you from system changes and spyware while you are working, not just removing malware after it has been installed. There are a range of paid-for and free packages available, a free one I can recommend is Windows Defender, available here:
http://www.microsoft...re/default.mspx

I recommend you install a custom hosts file such as MVPS HOSTS. This custom hosts file effectively blocks a wide range of unwanted ads, banners, 3rd party Cookies, 3rd party page counters, web bugs, and many hijackers.
For information on how to download and install, please read this tutorial by WinHelp2002
Note: Be sure to follow the instructions to disable the DNS Client service before installing a custom hosts file.
Also: subscribe to the mailing list to get update notifications.

Please take care when downloading programs. One of the easiest ways to be infected is to download freeware/shareware programs which come laden with malware - this includes allowing websites to install browser plug-ins or ActiveX controls. Before downloading, it is crucial to check whether the source is reputable. The SiteAdvisor software installed on your machine can help you with this.

Download and install the free version of WinPatrol. This program protects your computer in a variety of ways and will work well with your existing security software. Have a look at this tutorial to help you get started with the program.

Please post back to let me know that you have read this, and if there are any further issues.
