I am working on my sisters computer, I just installed a new power supply, Sony Vaio VGC-RA710G, it is a mess, found (abetterintrnt) virus or adware, during system scan, it is slow booting up and acts weird. Ran AOL Mcafee and Adware 2008, then just ran Hijackthis, sounds like the hard drive is working all the time even in idle mood, Can any one help me clean this up or what is the best software to use to get this thing back to normal, I would hate to have to reformat it, she has all her pictures on here. Help???????????

James

My name is DFW, and I will be helping you to remove any infection(s) that you may have.

Please note! that all instructions given are customised for this computer only, the tools used may cause damage if used on a different computer or infection.

Please observe these rules while we work:
Perform all actions in the order given.
If you don't know, stop and ask! Don't keep going on.
Please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.
Stick with it till you're given the all clear.
REMEMBER, ABSENCE OF SYMPTOMS DOES NOT MEAN THE INFECTION IS ALL GONE.

If you can do these things, everything should go smoothly.

Please be patient as I need some time to review your Hijackthis log and i will post back recommendations for repairs.
As I am still on training, everything that I post to you, must be checked by an Admin or Moderator. Thus, there may be a tiny bit of a delay between posts, but it shouldn't be too long.

Hi James

I see you have SpyHunter Security Suite on your computer. This was known to be a dubious program in the past.

INFO HERE http://www.spywarewa...are.htm#sh_note

I would uninstall it, as we will install a free replacement a little later which is a lot better.

1.Download and Run combofix

For information regarding Combofix, please visit this webpage:
http://www.bleepingc...to-use-combofix
Please ensure you read this guide carefully and install the Recovery Console first
The Windows Recovery Console will allow you to boot up into a special recovery (repair) mode if needed
Once installed, you should see a blue screen prompt that says:
The Recovery Console was successfully installed

Very Important!, before running Combofix Temporarily disable your anti-virus, script blocking and any anti-malware real-time protection before performing a scan.
They can interfere with ComboFix or remove some of its embedded files which may cause "unpredictable results".

Combofix should never take more that 20 minutes including the reboot if malware is detected.
If it does, open Task Manager then Processes tab (press ctrl, alt and del at the same time) and end any processes of findstr, find, sed or swreg, then combofix should continue.
If that happened we want to know, and also what process you had to end.

Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall

When the tool is finished, it will produce a report for you, please post into your next reply.

Note: Combofix should not be used without supervision

First make a uninstall list using HijackThis
To access the Uninstall Manager you would do the following:

1. Start HijackThis
2. Click on the Config button
3. Click on the Misc Tools button
4. Click on the Open Uninstall Manager button.

Click on the Save list

Ok, will try this today. I'm laid off from work still, so this gives me something to do and I have to keep my mind busy. I found another program that was recommended by Cnet, ( Spyware Terminator), I ran that and got rid of what I knew was safe, but this is a Sony VAIO VGC-RA710G and has an OEM Mother Board, It also has alot of Sony programs installed on it from the factory that I'm not familiar with. It seems to running a little faster and stable. I will run all the scans and post them for you to look over. TY. James

I tried to do the combofix, dragged the windows recovery console on top of the combofix icon, but never saw the blue screen saying it was installed, I'm running spyware terminator now, going to try to save it and post it, had no internet last 2 days, due to the storms, will try it again and telll you what it says, plus post what is happening, I don't want to crash her computer, she is still making payments on it, she would kill me, have to make sure I'm doing it the right way, before I try it, can we set up a time to IM in live time, I have both computers hooked up to net, we can work on it together on it and I can tell you what it says as I'm doing it, let me know , I have AOL, Yahoo, and a few other instant messengers we could chat on. Thanks James

Hi James

Sorry to hear about your problems with your Internet connection, when you post the Combofix Log we will be able to tell it
the Recovery Console installed OK, the reason for installing the Recovery Console is so we can repair your system if the Malware
or anything else was to damage or leave your system unbootable, it's for your protection.

I am sorry but I cannot remove the Malware in realtime with I'M as I need to get all the fixes I post checked, also the teacher
and I on probably on different side of the world, so it is impossible, and not the way we do it.

Also please do not go running tools while i am trying to help you, it can sometimes be harder to remove a infection once the wrong tools
have been run, and can hide symptoms of any other infections on-board.

If you have any more trouble running Combofix please let me know.

Please post the 3 Logs I need when you can, and we can carry on from there.

I didn't disable the Windows Security Center that comes standard with windows XP Home SP2, it didn't say anything about that in how to disable your AV, FW and Anti-malware programs on the bleeping computer website that was posted on the combofix instructions, so if I need to disable it and run another scan let me know, I found out how to disable it by going to start, run and type in : services.msc, then click on security center and start type: disable, let me know if I need to disable this or if it was ok to leave that running when I posted the scan results, The computer booted back up ok and I saw the recovery console, so I think we are ok so far, I'll be awaiting your instructions. Thanks James

You've installed the wrong version of Recovery Console. We need to get it removed and re-install the correct version. Please make sure that you read through all instructions carefully. If you are unsure of any steps, please let me know.

Show hidden files and folders

  • Open My Computer.
  • Go to Tools > Folder Options.
  • Select the View tab.
  • Scroll down to Hidden files and folders.
  • Select Show hidden files and folders.
  • Uncheck (untick) Hide extensions of known file types.
  • Uncheck (untick) Hide protected operating system files (Recommended).
  • Click Yes when prompted.
  • Click OK.

Step 1

Delete this file, it's on your desktop.

WindowsXP-KB310994-SP2-Home-BootDisk-ENU.exe

Step 2

Delete this folder - C:\cmdcons

Step 3

Delete this file file - C:\Boot.ini

Step 4

Right click on this file - C:\Boot.bak and select Rename.

Copy and paste in Boot.ini and press Enter.

Let me know when you have done all 4 steps. Don't restart your computer yet.

What version of the recovery console do I need to install, I checked it to see what version I had, by going to my computer properties and also by typing (winver) in the-start, run---- it says Microsoft Windows XP, Media Center Edition, Version 2002, SP 2-------------Version 5.1 (build 2600.xpsp_sp2_gdr.070227-2254:Service pack 2), I will look at the site again to see if there is a different version. Do you know what one I need, let me know, That was the only version I saw with SP2, I didn't see a Media Center Version, I don't think it is XP professional, saw no signs of that, ust let me know. Thanks, James

Install the correct Recovery Console

we need to install the right Recovery Console on this computer
Due to the threat that current and future malware poses it is vital that you have some form of recovery console
this is very important it could save you later

Go to Microsoft's website => http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310994
Select the download that's appropriate for your Operating System

Posted Image

the one for you is Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2)

Then you need to select Windows XP Professional SP2

Download the file & save it as it's originally named, next to ComboFix.exe.

Very Important!, before running Combofix Temporarily disable your anti-virus, script blocking and any anti-malware real-time protection before performing a scan.
They can interfere with ComboFix or remove some of its embedded files which may cause "unpredictable results".

Drag the setup package onto ComboFix.exe and drop it as above

Follow the prompts to start ComboFix and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Recovery Console.

At the next prompt, click 'Yes' to run the full ComboFix scan.

When the tool is finished, it will produce a report for you.

Please include the following reports for further review, and so we may continue cleansing the system:

C:\ComboFix.txt
New HijackThis log.

Note: Combofix should not be used without supervision.

Ok I did all 4 steps in the one reply from you in post #10, I still don't understand which recovery console you want me to install, the one I installed the 1st time was the XP Service Pack 2, so what one do I need, what actually is Media Center Edition, is it an XP Home, or an XP Professional with the media center added on or is it two seperate disk, In post #12 you say the one for me is the ones below. So do I need to install them both, I just tried to download the XP SP2 it came up with the same numbers as the one I deleted. Sorry this is messed up, but I did what you told me, maybe the microsoft site is mis-labeled.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Per post #12, it sounds like you want me to download both of these, or is this a miss quote, how do I verify the version that I need.

the one for you is Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2)

Then you need to select Windows XP Professional SP2

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This is the one I downloaded the 1st time, is this the right one.

File Name: WindowsXP-KB310994-SP2-Home-BootDisk-ENU.exe
Version: SP2
Date Published: 8/9/2004
Language: English
Download Size: 4.4 MB
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
This is the other one that is on there, for the pro version. I copied and pasted both of these from the dowload site, same file numbers, just one say home one says pro, so you tell me, just copy and paste the one I need from the site, this is the shortcut to it that you sent me : http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310994

File Name: WindowsXP-KB310994-SP2-Pro-BootDisk-ENU.exe
Version: SP2
Date Published: 8/9/2004
Language: English
Download Size: 4.4 MB

I can't find where this is an XP professional machine, it is a Windows XP Media Center 2004 Edition Operating system that can't be updated by the rollup MCE 2005 update either, per Sony OEM, there seems to be no recovery console from Microsoft for this operating system, Sony has its own recovery wizard installed, I talked to Sony tech support and they said to use their recovery wizard and that they knew of no recovery console from Microsoft that would work with this machine since it is neither XP Home or PRO, and that the OS I have is totally different from the home version or the professional version or any other versions, that Media Center is a version of its own, can we do the clean up without installing the recovery console, I don't want to install the wrong one and mess up the machine. How can I delete what we have tried to install so far, and then I can scan it again and send you the system data. Then maybe it will show you the specs of the OS installed, or if your sure the one you posted in post #14 is the right one, I will install it as long as we can recover the machine if there is any problems. I read thru the website you gave me----http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310994, maybe you are getting false info from the scan I sent you, maybe it has the wrong info in the report or the wrong stuff installed on the computer that we are working on, maybe its the Sony setup, I don't know.
