I downloaded it and tried to install it. It made it through about 3/4 of the way of installation and said Internet Explorer encountered a problem and must shut down. I restarted my computer, and nothing works after startup. My desktop icons are there, but I cannot do anything. My cursor stays as an hourglass. I can work in safe mode, and it shows that I have SP2 when I click on Help, About Internet Explorer. But I still have no action in normal setup. Should I restore to a different date, try to reinstall SP2, or try to install IE7?
As for re-installing SP2, you could try that. But do it in safe-mode.
Be sure to remove old remnants of previous install of SP2 in
Add/remove programs.
Its rather peculiar and perplexing with that hourglass. Could you try
have a look in MS config / task manager next time, and see if CPU and
memory are being used when it happens. I suspect you may have a
program trying to start up, but somehow doesn't get fully executed, just
staying at the load post (hence the hourglass) and that is why you can
operate in safe mode where the program doesn't load.
Check which program might be the culprit, by disabling all non microsoft
applications and start each up manually. The one which doesn't load or
comes with an error message of missing files is the likely candidate.
Could I install sp 3 instead of removing/reinstalling sp 2? I mean, will any files that were missed from the sp 2 download overwrite from sp 3? Thanks again.

I would think so, as SP3 is "merely" SP2 with some updated security, drivers and such.
Can't see it should be a hinder. But IE7 is not included in SP3, you'll have to download
that seperately.
Hello again,
I downloaded sp 3 and it finished a full download. Restarted computer in normal mode and it seems to be working great. I am holding off from downloading IE 7 for a while because I think I might still have a lingering virus/spyware in my computer.
During shutdown, rundll32.exe stops responding and has to be shutdown manually. Then the computer turns to black screen and I have to hold the on/off button in to shutdown. I ran Spybot and it found Virtumonde files and registrys. I checked them to be fixed, and it says they were successfully done. When I restart and run Spybot again, it finds the same files again.
I noticed in my startup programs under task manager that a file named Rundll32.exe "C\Windows\system32\addkklam.dll" ,s is checked. Does this sound like a legit file? Should I not be posting virus/spyware problems in this forum?
Thanks for everything so far!
Hi mjmon
Great you got SP3 running, thats good news!
As for the :C\Windows\system32\addkklam.dll
I cannot answer, google didn't turn up anything.
It would be wise to post a log in the HJT forum.
You may want to include a link to this topic as a
reference for the malware fighter.

addkklam.dll - that's a virus. Remove it but definitely follow Abydos's suggestion and go to the Virus Removal forum, read the info there and follow the posted directions. Once you receive a clean bill of health, come back here if you have any additional questions or concerns.
Hello,
I posted a message on the HJT forum. I am still waiting a response, but I found some self help methods from other forums and it seemed to work! Ran various virus/spam programs and found nothing.
I then downloaded IE 7 and it is working good. Everything on the computer is working good with one exception. Windows will still not shutdown because Rundll32.exe is still not responding.
Another problem I just encountered was when I tried to open up my Microsft Money folder, installer asks me for my cd. When I click cancel, it goes to Microsoft Money with all my current banking info, but the installer comes up again asking for my cd and the screen goes away. This keeps repeating until I shut down Microsoft Money in Task Manager.
Unfortunately, no cd. That's not a major concern of mine right now. I have older versions on different computers that I can use. The main issue is the Rundll32.exe not responding.
Hi mjmon
We shouldn't be doing anything to your PC other than
what the malware fighter tells you to.
Just gave your log a quick look-over, and you have
a BHO entry with missing DLL file. It could be that, and
maybe not. Anyways, anything done to your PC at this
moment, may alter your logs. If the malware fighter is laying
a plane how to remove a possible infection, it might not work
because the enviroment since last log have changed. That in
itself can cause minor troubles if overlooked.

Oops! My bad! I should not have suggested anything until the analysis came back. Fortunately (for me) you don't have the disk so nothing I suggested caused your log to become obsolete.
