chkdsk volume: /r is not the command to enter. What Abydos is trying to get you to do is run chkdsk c: /r (volume: was meant to indicate your boot drive which is most like c:).

it does not resond when I type chkdsk volume: /r, but it does when I type chkdsk /r.

Just to be sure there's no confusion - you don't enter the word "volume" - by volume, they mean the drive letter. So for drive C, it would be chkdsk c: /r and for drive D, it would be chkdsk d: /r.

If you are on C and you don't enter the volume letter (that is, you enter chkdsk /r), it will run on C.
I have been running the chkdsk /r command. I ran it about 5 times so far. chkdsk is still saying it has found errors. Should I keep running it until it says no errors, or will it just keep finding errors?
Its unusual for chkdsk /r to find errors after 5 runs of 5 passes each…….it can indicate that you may have big trouble with your hard drive…..it may be on its way out………….. As a matter of urgency boot into safe mode if you can and check that your back up/copyarchive of all your important stuff is 100% up to date accurate and reproducible and kept safe on removable media….even if your back up/copy/archive is only a day or two out of date take the opportunity now to update it. Make sure that you do not forget anything that is important to you….drivers, Windows and Applications product keys and serial numbers, any downloaded application installation files, documents, data files, emails, work files, address books, spreadsheets, favourites, photos, music, videos…..your PHd thesis…..or whatever is important to you and what would present a difficulty for you if your hard drive was to fail, taking everthing on your machine with it. Also make sure you can quickly locate your installation discs…..so you are prepared if the worst comes to the worst and you need to buy a new hard drive. When all has been safely copied/archived/backed up post, back here and one of us will advise on the next steps, as there are various other tools that can check on your hard drive…….However its important to get all your important stuff safe before you do anything else. If you can't boot into normal mode or even safe mode (to check your back up) then pull out the hard drive and slave it to a working computer and complete your backup/archive/copy from there. As an alternative, you could put the hard drive in an external USB caddy and pull off the data required from most modern machines or even just use an IDE/SATA>USB cable kit, available for a few pounds or dollars from your friendly electrical store, or eBay. Please be sure to take all necessary personal safety precautions when working with your machines and at the same time observe full ESD (antistatic) procedures. If you are not absolutely certain of these then it would be wise to entrust the work to a local competent computer technician as although its good to save money and also learn how to fix things this should not be at the expense of your or your family's safety or at the risk of damage either to your machine or your data or all three! Good luck with this and let us know how you get on Regards paws
For the heck of it, I restarted my computer in regular startup (for the first time in a week). I figured I might as well see if anything worked before I started backing up my system. As the screen loaded, it said 'volume clean' along with a bunch of other stuff that loaded up too fast to read. I can acutally acces files in regular mode without freezing up now. The only warning/error that came up was a box titled 'Load Dll' with the warning 'Hook Load Failed'. I'm not sure what it meant, but I just closed out of it. The other warning/popup came telling me the windows sp version is out of date and to update to sp2. I'm at work now so I cannot try to update to SP2 because we do not have a router here for the laptop internet connection to work. Are there any more tests I should run, or can I try to download SP2 when I get home? My computer works, but I am not sure how stable it is at this point. I also noticed that it keeps trying to connect to the internet and asking me to try again, or work offline. Could the virus still be in the computer?
Before you do anything else have you backed up everything ?…..this should be your number one priority.
I strongly recommend that you do nothing at all with your machine until this is all complete.

Only when this is complete should you take further steps…….If there is a possibility that your machine is infected DO NOT install SP2….your machine should be free of malware before you install any Service pack apart from SP1 or 1A

I have come into this thread late so may have missed something, but SP2 was issued in August 2004……. it seems strange that you have waited so long to protect your machine by the addition of this Service Pack……… the absence of SP 2 has made your machine vulnerable to infection…………
Note
The current Service pack is SP3
Before installing SP3 it would be wise to visit the malware self help help pages and if still uncertain then go here and follow the directions:

I'm in the process of backing up. The reason I was installing SP2 was because I needed to reinstall IE 7 and I couldn't without SP2. I had IE 7 before I was told to put in Windows XP Pro CD to fix some files. Now, I have IE 6 and SP1, and was told to reinstall IE7.
Never really looked into backing up before. Besides programs I installed into the computer and my personal files in My Documents, is there anything else I should be concerned with backing up?
Hi these are the main things as per my previous post

Make sure that you do not forget anything that is important to you….drivers, Windows and Applications product keys and serial numbers, any downloaded application installation files, documents, data files, emails, work files, address books, spreadsheets, favourites, photos, music, videos…..your PHd thesis…..or whatever is important to you and what would present a difficulty for you if your hard drive was to fail, taking everthing on your machine with it.

Before downloading any specific hard drive testing tools it would be wise to run both chkdsk (checkdisk) and sfc (System File Checker)

1 Start>Run
type in the white box
cmd
hit the enter key
2 at the blackscreen
type
chkdsk /r
hit the enter key
hit Y and hit Enter to accept any restart request
your machine should now close down and restart and commence running chkdsk before it loads Windows.

If for any reason it does not close down and restart then perform this manually.
Chkdsk will perform 5 full passes on your machine and errors detected will be fixed automatically……. the whole process may take several hours as it checks and corrects errors. Make sure you have a free day available for this procedure as you will not be able to use your machine whilst it is running
Important Note Do Not switch off your machine whilst chkdsk is running……and note the space between the k and the / in the command chkdsk /r
(it's there for a purpose)
When it has finally done then it will attempt to boot your machine into normal Windows.

If it has found and corrected errors, then please repeat the whole procedure………….you may need to do this a number of times until it has done 2 complete runs of all 5 passes on two consecutive occassions without finding/correcting any errors.

When this has finally completed do this:
Start>Run
type in the white box
sfc /scannow
(note the space between the c and the / it's there for a reason)
click on OK
the scanner will open and check all protected Windows Systems Files…if it finds errors or damaged, or missing files, it will attempt to copy over "good" copies from other parts of your machine…if it can't find good, correct and undamaged files anywhere on your machine it will ask you to insert your Microsoft Windows XP installation disc…so please have it handy….make sure its the right one for your machine, either XP Pro or Home and with the correct service pack for your system. Ie if you have SP 2 installed then you will need the Microsoft Windows Installation disc with SP 2 included on it…….if you don't have one you can make one and slipstream the appropriate Service pack in to it……or easier by far, just borrow one from a chum………it is OK to do this for this particular procedure. The sfc will take a minimum of 20 minutes to run and maybe longer.
Let us know how you go when you have finished this and how your machine is working after the actions and any error codes/messages received. and we will advise the next steps

I will be away on holiday for a fortnight soon so other coleagues hopefully will pick up this thread (downloading hard drive system Tools, Seagate etc)

Hello again and thank you for your responses. I ran chkdsk /r 3 consecutive times and it ran the 5 stages with no error reports. Next, I started the sfc /scannow command and received the message "Files that are required for Windows to run properly must be copied to the Dll Cache. Please insert the Windows XP Professional SP1CD now." So I did and then it showed the message "Please wait while Windows verifies that all protected Window files are intact and in their original states." So I waited and it finsihed and that was is it. There was not message after stating anything. I don't know if there was supposed to be or not. So I restarted, and ran it again with the same message and result. I then restarted the computer and noticed it was working better. The only problems/errors that happened was a note on the bottom right icon that was titled "Windows Genuine Advantage" and stated "This version of Windows XP is no longer secure. To continue receiving the latest security updates, click here to upgrade SP2." The other problem/error was an error message titled 'Explorer.exe - Entry Point Not Found' and the message said "The procedure point EncodePointer could not be located in the dynamic link library Kernell32.dll." The last thing I noticed was it took a rather noticeable long amount of time loading personal options at startup, about 4 minutes. Other than that, it seemed to be working alot better with no freeze ups.
Hi mjmon Good your machine is running better. As for the SFC command, it doesn't produce a log or any kind of message. But that it asked for the CD, indicates that it replaced some file(s). Download SP2 (or SP3) and any other updates necessary. After that, download and install IE7. The other error message you mention in Kernell32.dll, is related to IE7, and should go away once IE7 installed. After those things are done, you need to clean up a bit after this ordeal. Let us know when you are finished with the downloads/installs. Regards Abydos
I tried and still receive the following message: The site cannot continue because one or more of these Windows services is not running: Automatic Updates (allows the site to find, download and install high-priority updates for your computer) Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS) (helps updates download more quickly and without problems if the download process is interrupted) Event Log (keeps a record of updating activities to help with troubleshooting, if needed) To make sure these services are running: 1. Click Start, and then click Run. 2. Type services.msc and then click OK. 3. In the list of services, double-click on Automatic Updates and then click Properties. 4. In the Startup type list, select Automatic and click Apply. 5. Verify that the Service status is started, if the Service Status is Stopped click on the Start Button. 6. In the list of services, double-click on Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS) and then click Properties. 7. In the Startup type list, select Manual and click Apply. 8. Verify that the Service status is started, If the Service Status is Stopped click on the Start Button. 9. In the list of services, double-click on Event Log and then click Properties. 10. In the Startup type list, select Automatic and click Apply. 11. Verify that the Service status is started, If the Service Status is Stopped click on the Start Button. I tried these and when I try to turn automatic updates to automatic, the following message appears: Cold not start the automatic updates service. Error 1058:The service cannot be started ither because it is disabled or because it has no enabled devices associated with it.
