I tried downloading sp2, and it states "The site cannot continue because one or more of thes Windows services is not running". -Automatic updates -background intelligent transfer service -event log It states to go into services.msc from the run option, and turn auto update on. I tried, and it says "Could not start the automatic updates service on Local Computer. Error 1058: The service cannot be started, either because it is disabled or because it has no enabled devices associated with it." Not sure what to do.

Hi mjmon

Its not the auto-update as such you need to turn on, but the background Intelligent transfer service. It should be set to manuel.
Run the command "services.msc" and find it so you can set it to manuel. Afterwards, you turn on automatic updates.

As for SP2. It could be a good idea to download it to desktop, and install from there.

SP2 download

Let me know how it goes.

Unfortunately, I can only work in Safe Mode. When I log onto Windows normally, my cursor turns into an hour glass and I cannot do anything. So when I try to download SP2, it tells me "The Windows Installer Service could not be accessed. This can occur if you are running Windows in safe mode, or if the Windows Installer is not correctly installed. Contact your support personnel for assistance." Any ideas? Thanks again.

Hi mjmon

Sorry you get all those error's. :(

It seems that the repair haven't done its job 100%.
Normally, one shouldn't get all those error's. The error's
are indicating that a lot of files is still missing. Why the
repair didn't replace those (which it should have) I don't
know for certain. It may be due to some bad sectors on the
HD or a bad file installment.

Another concern, how about your data? Now when you are able to
operate in safe mode, do you have means to backup your most vital
data?

There are some fixes/tools we can run to try repair this. It can be a
lengthy ordeal, depending on how well it goes.
I can only imagine how frustrated you are at the moment, with this whole thing.
It should have been fixed reasonably with the repair, and now error upon
error pops up out of the blue. Its also frustrating for me, as it was I that
recommended the repair.

Let me know if you're up to it, and we take it from there.

Hi mjmon

First and foremost we have to make sure there aren't any bad sectors. As that will hinder
anything else.

This tool is can be run from safe mode.

Manual steps to run Chkdsk at the command prompt

1. Click Start, and then Run.
2. In Open, type cmd, and then press ENTER.
3. Use one of the following procedures:
• To run Chkdsk in read-only mode, at the command prompt, type chkdsk, and then press ENTER.
• To repair errors without scanning the volume for bad sectors, at the command prompt, type chkdsk volume:/f, and then press ENTER.
• To repair errors, locate bad sectors, and recover readable information, at the command prompt, type chkdsk volume:/r, and then press ENTER.

Note If one or more of the files on the hard disk are open, you will receive the following message:
Chkdsk cannot run because the volume is in use by another process. Would you like to schedule this volume to be checked the next time the system restarts? (Y/N)
Type Y, and then press ENTER to schedule the disk check, and then restart your computer to start the disk check.

(Cut and modified from MS support)

We will be running the CHKDSK VOLUME: /R (Remember space before slash */* )

It may take some time and you will have to run the tool till it finds no errors. When finding zero errors, run it once more.

When done, try reboot normally, and see how it behaves.

I tried typing it in, and I get the message : "The drive, the path, or the file name is not valid." I remembered to put the space before the slash, too.
Not sure its working correctly because after restart, the page is staying on all the .sys files that are shown when safe mode is loading up. It's been staying there for about ten minutes. This sound ok?
Hi, chkdsk /r can take several hours to run all 5 of its standard passes……..when it has done, it should attempt to boot into Windows…as mentioned by Abydos you may need to run the program a number of times until it has completed all 5 passes on two consecutive occasions without finding and fixing any errors. Good luck regards paws
Computer restarted, but I didn't see if it said there was any errors or not. When I came back to check on it, it was at the log in screen. So I am going to run it again and wait and see. However, it does not resond when I type chkdsk volume: /r, but it does when I type chkdsk /r. I'm assuming this would be the same test?

Hi mjmon

Yes it is. Its possible that there are no errors, but then we know, and could proceed.
But wait and see if it finds any.

Don't know why I don't get a notify on mail?! I'll try work it out.
