Virus scanner keeps finding and deleting a few different viruses (mainly trojans) but not removing them properly. They're starting to impact on my system performance: Can't access some sites, internet explorer crashing and slow internet speed. Any help would be apprecitaed!

Hi Andyschnake and welcome back to the forums.

My name is Dave. I would be glad to take a look at your log and help you with solving any malware problems. HijackThis logs can sometimes take a while to research so please be patient and I'd be grateful if you would note the following:
  • I will working be on your Malware issues, this may or may not, solve other issues you have with your machine.
  • The fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for this issue on this machine.
  • Please continue to review my answers until I tell you your machine appears to be clear. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.
  • It's often worth reading through these instructions and printing them for ease of reference.
  • If you don't know or understand something, please don't hesitate to say or ask!! It's better to be sure and safe than sorry.
  • Please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.
  • I recommend you make a backup of any data that you have created, such as documents, pictures, music, ect... before we begin the fix.

Looks like Vundo/Conhook Trojan to me....let's get started.

Please download ComboFix from Here or Here to your Desktop.

**Note: In the event you already have Combofix, this is a new version that I need you to download. It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop**
  • Please, never rename Combofix unless instructed.
  • Close any open browsers.
  • Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

    -----------------------------------------------------------

    • Very Important! Temporarily disable your anti-virus, script blocking and any anti-malware real-time protection before performing a scan. They can interfere with ComboFix or remove some of its embedded files which may cause "unpredictable results".
    • Click on this link to see a list of programs that should be disabled. The list is not all inclusive. If yours is not listed and you don't know how to disable it, please ask.

      -----------------------------------------------------------

    • Close any open browsers.
    • WARNING: Combofix will disconnect your machine from the Internet as soon as it starts
    • Please do not attempt to re-connect your machine back to the Internet until Combofix has completely finished.
    • If there is no internet connection after running Combofix, then restart your computer to restore back your connection.

    -----------------------------------------------------------

  • Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • When finished, it will produce a report for you.
  • Please post the "C:\ComboFix.txt" along with a new HijackThis log for further review.
**Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall**

The help you receive here is free, but if you would like to help me continue the fight against Malware then Posted Image

Hi,

Nice work so far...

1. Please open Notepad
  • Click Start , then Run
  • Type notepad.exe in the Run Box.

2. Now copy/paste the entire content of the codebox below into the Notepad window:

File::
C:\WINDOWS\system32\ruxkqncw.dll

Registry::
[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\~\Browser Helper Objects\{29C8C539-F0A8-4A66-8D23-918C608BDA51}]
[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\~\Browser Helper Objects\{65347C71-1F16-40C9-9B0F-AEFEA3885E33}]
[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\~\Browser Helper Objects\{9E034D95-F367-4D16-835B-0867B9234873}]
[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\~\Browser Helper Objects\{CB96174D-9B5C-4D5C-AD86-4DF6D9C06017}]
[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\~\Browser Helper Objects\{D88A64BD-89E8-4A92-A1BA-70920D1B71F2}]
[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\~\Browser Helper Objects\{D9E2E0DC-2283-422D-8956-14B64169EEB8}]
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run]
"8056d136"=-
[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\windows nt\currentversion\winlogon\notify\mljigge]

3. Save the above as CFScript.txt

4. Then drag the CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe as depicted in the animation below. This will start ComboFix again.

5. After reboot, (in case it asks to reboot), please post the following reports/logs into your next reply:
  • Combofix.txt
  • A new HijackThis log.

Hi,
Not sure what happened but the script did not run properly. That's ok we'll just get the orphaned entries with HJT. Also, the malware your AV is finding is mainly in temp folders and restore points. We'll get the temp folders now, and the restore points at the end.

I see you have Spybot's Tea Timer running. We need to temporarily disable it so it won't block our fixes. Choose your version...

Disabling Spybot Teatimer v1.5

  • If you have version 1.5, right click the Spybot Icon in the system tray near the clock (looks like a blue/white calendar with a padlock symbol).
  • Click once on Resident Protection, then right click the Spybot icon again and make sure Resident Protection is now Unchecked. The Spybot icon in the System tray should now be now colorless.
  • Go to Start > All Programs > Spybot - Search & Destroy > Spybot Search & Destroy.
  • Click on Mode > Advanced Mode. When it prompts you, click Yes.
  • On the left hand side, click on Tools.
  • Check (tick) this box if it is not yet ticked: Resident.
  • You will notice that Resident is now added under Tools. Click on Resident.
  • Uncheck (untick) this box: Resident "TeaTimer" (Protection of over-all system settings) active.
  • Exit Spybot Search & Destroy.
  • Restart your computer for the changes to take effect.

Disabling Spybot Teatimer v1.4

  • If you have version 1.4, go to Start > All Programs > Spybot - Search & Destroy > Spybot Search & Destroy.

Run HijackThis. Click Do a System Scan Only. Put a Check in the box on the left side on these:

Let's do a deep scan for viruses...

Please do an online scan with Kaspersky WebScanner

You need to use Internet Explorer for this scan.

Click on Kaspersky Online Scanner and click Accept

You will be prompted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.
  • The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
  • Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
  • Now click on Scan Settings
  • In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
    • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
    Extended (if available otherwise Standard)
    • Scan Options:
    Scan Archives
    Scan Mail Bases
  • Click OK
  • Now under select a target to scan:Select My Computer
  • This will program will start and scan your system.
  • The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
  • Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
    • Now click on the Save as Text button:
  • Save the file to your desktop.
  • Copy and paste that information in your next post.

Also post a new HJT log and let me know how it's running now.
IndiGenus

The help you receive here is free, but if you would like to help me continue the fight against Malware then Posted Image

Logs will be closed if you haven't replied within 5 days

Hi,

Just one file that needs to be deleted. You can use Windows Explorer to delete the file.

D:\Backup\Andy Dorman\My Documents\My Received Files\Games\J-Ball.exe

Next, if all is well, we should remove combofix.

Time for some housekeeping
  • Click START then RUN
  • Now type Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK. Note the space between the X and the U, it needs to be there.

The above procedure will:
  • Delete the following:
    • ComboFix and its associated files and folders.
    • VundoFix backups, if present
    • The C:\Deckard folder, if present
    • The C:_OtMoveIt folder, if present
  • Reset the clock settings.
  • Hide file extensions, if required.
  • Hide System/Hidden files, if required.
  • Reset System Restore.

Let me know how its' running.

Hi Andy,

Glad it's running better, just some final advice on some other programs and things you may want to consider, in addition to updating and running what you currently have.

Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will added a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs.
A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:
Using SpywareBlaster to protect your computer from Spyware and Malware

Install SpywareGuard - SpywareGuard provides a real-time protection solution against spyware that is a great addition to SpywareBlaster's protection method.
A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:
Using SpywareGuard to protect your computer from Spyware and Malware

Use Zoned Out -
Zoned Out will block access to malicious websites so you cannot be redirected to them from an infected site or email. Instructions for set up and use can be found at the website.

Update all of your Anti-Malware programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed and the ones you are currently running regularly. Without regular updates you Will Not be protected when new malicious programs are released.

Here is a great link to a post here on securing your PC after an attack.

Good luck,
Dave
