Hi. New to the forums...thanks for providing such a great service.

I got some spyware/malware yesterday on this Dell laptop. Ran Spybot and AdAware, which did not get rid of it. Read some of the posts on this forum and ran ATF Cleaner and Anti-Malware. Also downloaded AVG 8.0 and scanned entire system.

I don't know what the name of the bug is, but AVG keeps popping up to block trojans.

I downloaded Firefox and am currently using it, but still am getting occasional pop-ups that come up in IE (even though IE is not open). I will paste HJT and Malewarebytes logs below. Please let me know if you need anything else. Thanks. -Jeremy

looks like you had quite a load of goodies.

download and run two apps please, SmitfraudFix and sdfix (run in safe mode)

Smitfraud:

Download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri) to your Desktop.

Double-click SmitfraudFix.exe

Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press Enter

This program will scan large amounts of files on your computer for known patterns so please be patient while it works. When it is done, the results of the scan will be displayed and it will create a log named rapport.txt in the root of your drive, eg: Local Disk C: or partition where your operating system is installed. Please post the log.

Download SDFix and save it to your Desktop.

Double click SDFix.exe and it will extract the files to %systemdrive%

(Drive that contains the Windows Directory, typically C:\SDFix)


Please then reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :


* Restart your computer

* After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;

* Instead of Windows loading as normal, the Advanced Options Menu should appear;

* Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press Enter.

* Choose your usual account.


* Open the extracted SDFix folder and double click RunThis.bat to start the script.

* Type Y to begin the cleanup process.

* It will remove any Trojan Services and Registry Entries that it finds then prompt you to press any key to Reboot.

* Press any Key and it will restart the PC.

* When the PC restarts the Fixtool will run again and complete the removal process then display Finished, press any key to end the script and load your desktop icons.

* Once the desktop icons load the SDFix report will open on screen and also save into the SDFix folder as Report.txt

(Report.txt will also be copied to Clipboard ready for posting back on the forum).

* Finally paste the contents of the Report.txt back on the forum.

no popups yet after running the two programs yesterday, but AVG just popped up with a trojan in a system restore file. so i turned off system restore (to delete all the restore points) and then turned it back on. just wanted to let you know. thanks.

hi,

ok good. cruise around and make sure the popups are gone. normally we clean out the restore points as a last step. once it all looks good we can repeat it just for good measure. you can update your java version:

Vulnerabilities/exploits in versions of Sun Java may be responsible for some malware installs via your browser.

It is important to keep Sun Java up to date and also to remove older versions which may have vulnerabilites/exploits that can be taken advantage of to possibly introduce malware via your browser.


* 1. Uninstall old versions of Sun Java via Add/Remove Programs.
* 2. Click the Remove or Change/Remove button
* 3. Reboot your PC if prompted.

Ok, no more popups so far. I uninstalled Java and installed the newest version. Can you give me recommendations for free anti-spyware/malware/virus programs to have installed that will monitor in the background? Is having Ad-Aware and Spybot enough? Also, AVG is only free for 30 days, so I'll need a replacement after that. Thanks so much for your help. -Jeremy

you can delete both the smitfraud icon and the sdfix folder.

one last thing to do is make a new restore point. the why and the how:

One of the features of Windows ME,XP and Vista is the System Restore option, however if malware infects a computer with is possible that it can be backed up in the System Restore folder. Therefore, clearing the restore points is a good idea after malware is removed.

To reset your restore points, please note that you will need to log into your computer with an account which has full administrator access. You will know if the account has administrator access because you will be able to see the System Restore tab. If the tab is missing, you are logged in under a limited account.

(winXP)

1. Turn off System Restore. (deletes old possibly infected restore point)
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

2. Reboot.

3. Turn ON System Restore.(new restore points on a clean system)
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK, then reboot

personally i think two anti-malware apps is plenty. more dosnt increase your protection as they only overlap in what they do. also if both happen to have a real time component, only have one component active as both could chew up system resources.

i would keep Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, and spybot but its up to you.

My Top Ten
The Short Version:

1) Keep your OS, browser and software up to date.
2) Know what you are installing to your computer. Do you trust the source?
3) Install, keep updated: antivirus and one or two anti-malware applications.
4) Dont click on adds/pop ups or offers from websites to install software.
5) Dont click on offers to "scan" your computer.
6) Dont click on links or install files you receive via E-Mail, IM, Chat Rooms or Social Sites. Do you trust the source?
7) Set up and use limited accounts rather than administrator accounts.
8) Consider using an alternate browser and E-mail client.
9) Install and understand the limitations of a third party software firewall.
10) If your habits include warez, cracks/keygens, P2P or visting adult sites you are much more likely to encounter malicious code. Do you trust the source?
