Hi guys. My first post here. So apologies in advance if i do something annoying.
Getting straight to the point, i downloaded a ''set up'' file which appeared to have 1 kb size ( ok i confess, it was meant to be a demo for alice greenfingers :smack: ) anyways, before i opened it, i scanned it with AVG and the file appeared to be ok. But as soon as i opened it, the first thing i noticed was that the task manager was gone. Completely disabled. I did CTRL ALT DEL but a message popped up saying the admin of the computer has put restrictions on using this feature -even though i am the admin. Anyways. then the explorer started to crash and restart like every 2 seconds. I googled the task manager problem and downloaded TaskManagerFIx.exe which brought my task manager back.

Then i noticed a process in the task manager listed as ''verclsid.exe'' or something like that, it would appear for a second and then disappear, and shortly after that the explorer would crash.
I downloaded kaspersky which asked me to remove AVG and zonealarm, and scanned my whole system, it found a few infections, deleted a couple and it was unable to locate a few. So now my computer is explorer-less, and i just cant do anything. I am able to do everything , like do my coursework, and check my email and so on without the explorer.exe , but i know i got spywares and viruses on my computer and i dont want some bast*** of a hacker getting his/her dirty hands on my personal stuff. So i have not been able to do any thing.
Oh one other thing that i noticed, when i tried to do a system restore, there just wasnt any restore points, even though i clearly remember creating a few last month. So they have definitely gone.
I also ran combofix. It did its thing, rebooted the system, gave me a log file. The explorer stopped crashing, but then kaspersky came up with a pop up saying this file is infected, and when i clicked on disinfect, the explorer started to terminate and restart again. So my problems still there. i would appreciate it if somebody could come along and talk me through how to fix my computer. i am actually on the verge of re installing the whole of windows, the only thing that stops me is the tons of valuable and non backed up data i have got on my computer that i cant afford to lose. So... if anyone could kindly help, i would be realllly grateful. Cheers in advance for taking your time to read through this. Looking forward to a reply.

oh and heres my log from HijackThis.

You might want to print these instructions out.

I suggest you do this:

Double-click My Computer.
Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
Click the View tab.
Clear "Hide file extensions for known file types."
Under the "Hidden files" folder, select "Show hidden files and folders."
Clear "Hide protected operating system files."
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Please do not delete anything unless instructed to.

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
Download - ATF Cleaner»
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.

(If you use FireFox or the Opera browser
To keep saved passwords, click No at the prompt.)

It's normal after running ATF cleaner that the PC will be slower to boot the first time or two.

Next:

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop.

  • Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
  • At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location and post the results.
  • Note: If you receive a notice that some of the items couldn't be removed, that they have been added to the delete on reboot list, please reboot.
Also "copy/paste" a new HijackThis log file into this thread.

Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.

HJT doesn't list anything to delete. It just shows us whats loaded and running. If you checked everything that HJT shows, you'd probubly kill your system.

Download ComboFix from Here or Here to your Desktop.
**Note: In the event you already have Combofix, please delete it from your desktop and download this new version . It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop**
--------------------------------------------------------------------
  • Close any open browsers and make sure you are disconnected from the net. Unplug the cable if need be before running combofix.
  • WARNING: IF you have not already done so Combofix will disconnect your machine from the Internet when it starts
  • Please do not re-connect your machine back to the Internet until Combofix has completely finished.
--------------------------------------------------------------------

Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
When finished, it will produce a report for you.
Please post the "C:\ComboFix.txt" along with a new HijackThis log for further review

****Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall or freeze ****

*If there is no internet connection when Combofix has completely finished then restart your computer to restore back the connections.

Give it atleast 20-30 minutes to finish

At this stage my computer is behaving like it does normally. Perfect. However if there is any hidden viruses then only you would know about them. So you can have a look at my log, and see if theres anything else i need to do. And the only other thing i am gonna say is, You truly are a legend. They should make an '' I am legend'' film on you.

After the combofix scan, the spybot search and destroy asked me if i wanted to allow a ''global entry'' change made to the system, i just allowed it. Dont know if i was meant to or not.
And one other thing, before i had this problem with my computer, i ran '' msconfig'' and made changes to the way my system starts up, it had laods of unwanted proccesses running in the back ground at start up such as Nokia application launcher, quick time player, and similar kinda things that slowed the system start up, so yeah i disabled them, and start ups were much faster as the number of processes listed in task manager were down to 38 or something. and then a few days later i got this virus, and explorer.exe became unstable, so i opened msconfig again, and clicked on ''load all devices'' or something to see if it helped, so then it started to run every process there is, and the number on the task manager list went upto 58 or something. But that fixed my explorer.exe problem for a while. Then i changed it back to the settings i had before, to speed up the system start up. But that screwed up my explorer.exe so i changed it back to load all devices and i am still running my system on that setting. I want to change it back to basic/quick boot up settomg, but it might cause the explorer.exe problem again, do you think i should leave it as it is or should i change it back to how i want it to be and see whether it works ? Sorry if i confused you. Thanks for your time again man. You rock!

Run hijackthis. Hit None of the above, Click Do a System Scan Only. Put a checkmark/tick in the box on the left side on these:

I was thinking that would give me everything listed in startup.
If you want, run msconfig and list everything there and I'll suggest which ones to uncheck.

Lets try this first:

After starting Hijack This!, click on Open the Misc Tools Section.

To the right of Generate Startuplist log, there are two boxes.

Check them both, then click Generate Startuplist log.

Then "copy/paste" the contents of the startuplist log into your next post.

Good job

  • Click START then RUN
  • Now type Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK. Note the space between the X and the U, it needs to be there.

Here's my usual all clean post

    Log looks good :D

You need to create a new Clean restore point.

Note: This will remove all previous Restore Points

Click Start Menu > Run > copy and paste

    %SystemRoot%\System32\restore\rstrui.exe

Press OK. Choose Create a Restore Point then click Next. Name it (something you'll remember) and click Create, when the confirmation screen shows the restore point has been created click Close.

    Double-click My Computer.
Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
    Click the View tab.
Check "Hide file extensions for known file types."
Under the "Hidden files" folder, Uncheck "Show hidden files and folders."
Check "Hide protected operating system files."
Click Apply, and then click OK.

    • Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:
      • From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
      • Click once on the Security tab
      • Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
      • Click once on the Custom Level button.
      • Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
      • Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
      • Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
      • Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
      • Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
      • Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
      • When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
      • If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
    • Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.
  • Update your AntiVirus Software - It is imperative that you update your Antivirus software at least once a week
(Even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.

  • Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer.
Without a firewall your computer is succeptible to being hacked and taken over.
I am very serious about this and see it happen almost every day with my clients.
Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly.

For a tutorial on Firewalls and a listing of some available ones see the link below:
Note: I no longer suggest Zone Alarm

    Understanding and Using Firewalls

  • Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly.
This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer.
If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site
until there are no more critical updates.

  • Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will add a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer
settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs.

A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

Using SpywareBlaster to protect your computer from Spyware and Malware

  • Winpatrol

  • Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly.
Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.

Only run one Anti-Virus and Firewall program.

I would also suggest you read this:

Right my friend everything looks perfect i followed all your instructions and downloaded all the softwares you recommended. One last thing, my internet explorer is REALLLLYYYYYY slow. Its been like that for 2 or 3 years so i have completely stopped using it. Thats how slow it is. And i am using firefox just now. Best browser ever! But should i do something about my internet explorer or just leave it? I dont ever use it or anything so dont see any point in getting it sorted out, unless my computers at risk because of that.
