Hi, I'm hoping some good person will be able to help me rid my computer of this nasty bug that has taken over my browser.
It is throwing up web pages without being asked.

hi,

thanks for the info. Cid is usually a third party add-on that might be spelled out in the EULA during a install. i dont see anything in the list you provided though.

lets see what this can dig up:

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop:

http://www.besttechie.net/tools/mbam-setup.exe

* Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
* Be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
* If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
* Once the program has loaded, select Perform FULL SCAN, then click Scan.
* When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
* Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
* When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location. The log can also be opened by going to Start > All Programs > Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware > Logs > log-date.txt

post the malwarebytes log.

hi,

ok thanks. lets see what combofix can dig up:

Download combofix from one of these links and save it to Desktop:

http://subs.geekstogo.com/ComboFix.exe
http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe

as a precaution, before using combofix:

1. * Temporarily disable your anti-virus, script blocking and any anti-malware real-time protection before performing a scan.
* Click on this link below to see a list of programs that should be disabled. The list is not all inclusive. If yours is not listed and you don't know how to disable it, please ask.
* Remember to re enable the protection again afterwards before connecting to the net

link:
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic114351.html

2. Close any open browsers and make sure you are disconnected from the net. Unplug the cable if need be before running combofix.

* IF you have not already done so Combofix will disconnect your machine from the Internet when it starts.
* If there is no internet connection when Combofix has completely finished then restart your computer to restore back the connections.

3. Now double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
When finished, it will produce a report for you.
Please post the "C:\ComboFix.txt" along with a new HijackThis log for further review

Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall or freeze.

hi drumh:

no clues there that i can tell. i have never used this before myself but we will give it a try anyway:

download NoLop.exe to desktop:
http://www.spywareedge.net/nolop/NoLop.exe

* First close any other programs you have running as this will require a reboot.
* Double click NoLop.exe to run it.
* Then click the button labelled "Search and Destroy".
* When scanning is finished you will be prompted to reboot only if infected, click 'OK'.
* Now click the "REBOOT" Button.
* A Message should popup from NoLop, if not, double click the program again and it will finish.
Post the contents of C:\NoLop.log into your next reply.

EDIT: nevermind the above for now, try this:

this looks like the culprit:
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Ownsstore] C:\DOCUME~1\HAANSK~1.000\APPLIC~1\INSIDE~1\AdminEach.exe

first we will use hjt, then boot into safe mode to delete the folder.

start HJT, click the "Scan" button. check the items below, close any open windows, then click "Fixed checked"

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Ownsstore] C:\DOCUME~1\HAANSK~1.000\APPLIC~1\INSIDE~1\AdminEach.exe

restart computer in safe mode. to reach safe mode you would tap the f8 key during a computer restart, chose the first option: safe mode.

you should copy/paste this into notepad and save it so you can read it in safe mode:

FOr XP: on the desktop double click my computer,go to tools>folder options>view> then select "show hidden files and folders", then UNcheck "hide protected operating system files " also UNcheck "hide extensions for known file types" click apply to all folders, apply then ok
to help show all files:

in safe mode navigate to;
c:\documents and settings\HANNSK\ (a user profile)application data\
looking for a folder starting with INSIDE, has a .exe inside called AdminEach.exe

delete the entire folder. also in safe mode you can do this:

Click Start>Run then type %temp%
Hit OK. Delete all the files you can.

click Start>Run then type %windir%\temp
hit ok. delete all the files you can

Empty your Temp folders. Go to Start > Run and type:cleanmgr. Windows will scan. When done check these 3 and press *ok* to remove:

Temporary Files
Temporary Internet Files
Recycle Bin
——————————————–
reboot normally, rescan and post a new hjt log please.
Hi shelf life,
Here's the new hjt log.
Interestingly, when I did the hjt scan prior to restarting in safe mode, the entry you advised me to delete was already gone.
I located the "INSIDE" folder and deleted it.

Thanks again!
hi,

ok good. that must have taken care of the popups?
you can remove combofix like this:

start>run and type in combofix /u
hit ok. note: there is a space after the x and before the u

if all is good: two things, java update and system restore. the how and why:

Java
Vulnerabilities/exploits in versions of Sun Java may be responsible for some malware installs via your browser.

It is important to keep Sun Java up to date and also to remove older versions which may have vulnerabilites/exploits that can be taken advantage of to possibly introduce malware via your browser.

* 1. Uninstall old versions of Sun Java via Add/Remove Programs.
* 2. Click the Remove or Change/Remove button
* 3. Reboot your PC if prompted.

to check if you have the latest version of Java and to download the latest version:

http://www.java.com/en/download/installed.jsp

system restore:

One of the features of Windows ME,XP and Vista is the System Restore option, however if a malware infects a computer with this operating system it can be backed up in the System Restore folder. Therefore, clearing the restore points is a good idea after malware is removed.

To reset your restore points, please note that you will need to log into your computer with an account which has full administrator access. You will know if the account has administrator access because you will be able to see the System Restore tab. If the tab is missing, you are logged in under a limited account.

(winXP)

1. Turn off System Restore. (deletes old possibly infected restore point)
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

2. Reboot.

3. Turn ON System Restore.(new restore points on a clean system)
