Specs: Sony VAIO 4 yrs old, Pent 4, 3.04 GHz, runs w/752 MB RAM, (1 512MB DDR, 1 1GB DDR), XP PRO SP2, 60GB HD, CDR/RW/DVD Drive,

Problems:
boots slow - over 10 min
runs slow - tried free windows registry cleaner, speed it up, optimization, defragmentation
won't recognize blank CDR/RW for burning
occasionally won't recognize external HD (2yrs old)
windows settings set to optimum performance ( Win 98 display)
Norton not catching any viruses or bugs

I downloaded HijackThis and ran the system scan, here is the log:

Hello Purjewl

Welcome to the Whatthetech Malware Removal Forum, sorry about the delay, but the amount of people posting with infected computers is through the roof and sometimes we can't get to logs as fast as we would like to. If you have not resolved your issue and still need assistance, post a new HJT log please as your system may have changed since your original post.

Ken
Thanks for the reply, I am glad for any response, no matter the delay. I also posted another topic, it may be related in some way or another, (IMAPI burning problems)

But anyway, here is the new HJT logs:

Hello,

I want to point out that you have P2P File Sharing installed, this is not recommended as the programs themselves are ok but you never know whats going to come with that music file or movie you downloaded, its like playing Russian Roulette . Another thing you want to stay away from are Registry Cleaners, besides some free ones floating around some could be a trojan, if you remove the wrong entry even with a good one you can disable your system big time.

C:\Program Files\Etomi <– I would uninstall this

Open HijackThis > Do a System Scan Only, close your browser and all open windows including this one, the only program or window you should have open is HijackThis, check the following entries and click on Fix Checked.

These are dead links

You can remove the rest of these

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune to your desktop.
  • This program is for XP and Windows 2000 only
  • Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
  • Under Main choose: Select All
  • Click the Empty Selected button.
Your system may start up slower after running ATF Cleaner, this is expected but will be back to normal after the first or second boot up

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from Here or Here

Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
  • Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
  • The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.(See Extra Note)
  • The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy and Paste the entire report in your next reply along with a Hijackthis log.
Ok. Did all that.
1. couldn't find Etomi anywhere, i searched in win explorer and went through add/remove programs, not found anywhere. ( i think i used to have it but got rid of it.)
2. i do have limewire installed, i don't believe i have ever had any problems with it, however, i had read up on it before and i use it sparingly. i think that is the P2P you saw.
3. did the HJT scan and removed as shown; after ATF it actually started up faster; heres the logs:

Hi,

You had some bad entries in your System Restore Program, lets flush it out and I don't want you to proceed with deleting that file until you Create a New Restore Point

System Restore makes regular backups of all your settings, if you ever had to use this program to restore your system to a previous date, you will be infected all over again so we need to clean out the previous Restore Points

Turn off System Restore.

  • Right-click My Computer.
  • Click Properties.
  • Click the System Restore tab.
  • Check Turn off System Restore on all Drives.
  • Click Apply, and then click OK.

Reboot your computer

Turn ON System Restore.

  • Right-click My Computer.
  • ClickProperties.
  • Click the System Restore tab.
  • UN-Check Turn off System Restore on all Drives.
  • Click Apply, and then click OK.

Create a new Restore Point <– Very Important

  • Go to Start/ Control Panel/ Performance and Maintenance/ System Restore/ Create a New Restore Point
You need to go into the Control Panel and switch to Catagory View to be able to Create a New Restore Point
System Restore Tutorial <– If you need it

After and only after you create a New Restore Point then do this.

Please download OTMoveIt2 by OldTimer.
  • Save it to your desktop.
  • Please double-click OTMoveIt.exe to run it.
  • Copy the file paths below to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose copy):

    C:\Documents and Settings\Amber\My Documents\My Music\Players\virtualdjfree.exe

  • Return to OTMoveIt, right click on the "Paste List of Files/Folders to be moved" window and choose Paste.
  • Click the red Moveit! button.
  • Copy everything on the Results window to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose copy), and paste it on your next reply.
  • Close OTMoveIt
If a file or folder cannot be moved immediately you may be asked to reboot the machine to finish the move process. If you are asked to reboot the machine choose Yes.

Post the OTMoveIt log and a new HJT log and let me know how your system is running now?
C:\Documents and Settings\Amber\My Documents\My Music\Players\virtualdjfree.exe moved successfully.

Good Morning,

Clean log  I asked how your system is running now and you did not let me know so I will take that as positive.

  • Your Java is out of date and leaving your system vulnerable.
  • Go to your Add-Remove Programs in the Control Panel and uninstall any previous versions of Java (J2SE Runtime Environment)
  • It should have an icon next to it:
    [external image: Posted Image]
    Select it and click Remove.
  • Reboot your system.
  • Then go to the Sun Microsystems and install the update
  • Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 6 <–This is what you need to download and install.
  • If you chose the online installation, it will prompt you to run the program.
  • If you chose the offline installation, you will be prompted to save the file and you can run it from wherever you saved it.
  • Then after install you can verify your installation here Sun Java Verify
I like to to do the offline installation and save the setup file in case I may need it in the future

  • How did I get infected in the first place ? Read these links and find out how to prevent getting infected again.
  • Tutorial for System Restore <– Do this first to prevent yourself from being reinfected.

Thanks for all your help. My system is running much better now. Couple things: I was wondering about all the java apps that were installed, thanks for the tip on that one. 1. Is there a better anti-virus (freeware hopefully) than norton? i was surprised to find out i was infected, when norton always shows im clean. 2. i will defintely check out those links you listed. thanks again!
