Hi again
The computer has slowed considerably. I have done the tutorial to clean it up. Now could someone please just tell me what to get rid off my computer so I have more space and it runs more effectively. Im afraid to delete things just in case they are important. Basically I just use the computer now for surfing the net so I dont need anything else. Thankyou. Belinda

Run HJT and click on Open the Misc Tools section.
  • Click Open Uninstall Manager...
  • Click Save list... and save it to your Desktop.
  • Copy and paste the file uninstall_list.txt into your next reply.

Ad-Aware SE Personal is out of date by quite a way and needs to go. While there is a new free version available, i'd go with a different scanner and see what you think - see below.

AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5 is going to be phased out as a stand-alone product by Grisoft, so unless you have the paid-for version with the real-time protection, i'd remove that too.

I'd switch to MBAM, which is free for the stand-alone scanner although you can upgrade to real-time protection if you wish- http://thespykiller....pic,5946.0.html
Given the next part, below, i'd not bother with any more real-time protection though.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
You are running Spybot - Search & Destroy's TeaTimer, SpywareGuard and WinPatrol. All three of these programs have similar actions and you could quite happily go with just one - you'll see an increase in PC speed, simply from reducing the number of programs running at once.
There's nothing to stop you running all three, as they usually play nicely together, but if you try it with just WinPatrol and see how you get on - you can always reinstall one or both or the others if you aren't happy.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

You are running an old version of Sun Java which needs updating:
  • Go here and click on the Download button to the right of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6u5.
  • Accept the license agreement by clicking the appropriate radio button and then continue.
  • Under Windows Platform - Java™ SE Runtime Environment 6 Update 5, click the Windows Offline Installation, Multi-language link.
  • Go to Add/Remove Programs and remove any entries that refer to Java 2 Runtime Environment and then reboot your PC.
  • Navigate to and delete the following folder, if it exists: C:\Program Files\Java.
  • Finally double click the installation file that you downloaded earlier.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\QTTask.exe" -atboottime
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Adobe Reader Speed Launcher] "C:\Program Files\Adobe\Reader 8.0\Reader\Reader_sl.exe"
These two lines refer to autostarts for QuickTime and Adobe Reader respectively. They are responsible for part loading these programs so that when you start them, they are available more quickly. If you use these programs regularly them it may be worth it to you to have them available at the click of a mouse, but if not then why bother having them add to your boot up time?
If you are happy to wait a few more seconds for both QuickTime and adobe reader to start, then do the following:
Run HijackThis as you did to generate a log, but this time click on 'Do a system scan only'.
Place a checkmark in the boxes to the left of the following entries, by clicking on them:
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\QTTask.exe" -atboottime
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Adobe Reader Speed Launcher] "C:\Program Files\Adobe\Reader 8.0\Reader\Reader_sl.exe"
CLOSE ALL OPEN WINDOWS AND BROWSERS - EXCEPT HJT and click on Fix checked
Logitech Desktop Messenger is responsible for popups concerning Logitec stuff and i'd remove that from Add/Remove Programs too.
Ok, There was no Java 2 Runtime Environment in Remove Options.
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 10 - J = Java, not sure what the SE stands for, probably Special Edition.
Ive done a couple of other things and think I have stuffed up
HJT is primarily an anti-malware tool and isn't going to tell me exactly what you've done - you'll need to do that yourself.
Out of interest, what did you swop AVG Anti-Virus for PC Tools AntiVirus?
Umm I swapped AVG for Trent because I got the impression it was defunct; well soon anyway. Dont worry, I tried to get it back and there is no way I can...computer just says no AVG interface...I stuffed it, didnt I? There was no Windows Platform - Java™ SE Runtime Environment 6 Update 5 where you indicated, only Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 6 which I thought might be it so I downloaded it. They are my stuff-ups so far. Now what? Thankyou
AVG 7.5 is going to be retired shortly, but 8.0 will be replacing it, so it could have stayed.
Quite possibly.
There was no Windows Platform - Java™ SE Runtime Environment 6 Update 5 where you indicated, only Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 6 which I thought might be it so I downloaded it.
Yup, they've just released a new version.
Now what?
Don't actually know. I don't know what is the cause of the ultra slow speed issue, so I don't know what to do to fix it - I do malware quite well, oops resolutions not quite so well.
The first thing I would do is try System Restore and pick a point before you started messing with things and see if that gets AVG back up and running.
A tutorial for System Restore is available here.
Well thanks you have been really helpful...maybe I should just buy an antivirus if Trend is no good...I tried the system restore yesterday to get AVG back. Thanks for all your help. Belinda
There's nothing wrong with AVG - it will just be switching from v7.5 to v8.0 in the future. The new version will also be free to home users as far as i'm aware. I'd stick with AVG 7.5 for a little while longer so that any issues that occur with the new version can be dealt with before you get it. If I remember rightly you have until December to swop over. I have AVG on two lappys and am happy with it and I wouldn't recommend it if I thought it was pants.
Oh yes, I know; its just that for some reason I couldn't put AVG 7.5 back on; something to do with the interface...but I found a free version of 8 so Ive got that now. Cheers Belinda :))
