I got a virus on my laptop and I can't get it removed no matter what I try. I ran the HijackThis program and this is the resulting logfile.

Open Notepad: Start > All Programs > Accessories > Notepad. Click on Format and ensure that Wordwrap is unchecked. If it isn't, uncheck it.
Once you've done that, post a fresh HJT log as the first one is unreadable.
Also, run HJT and click on Open the Misc Tools section.
  • Click Open Uninstall Manager...
  • Click Save list... and save it to your Desktop.
  • Copy and paste the file uninstall_list.txt into your next reply.
Finally, can you tell me why you think you have a virus on your laptop - it may sound a stupid question, but the more you tell me, the easier you make it. If your anti-virus is detecting it, i'd like the filename and full path that it reports.
Death to the salad eaters!

My daughter went to a web site and a program called Virus Heat, an Internet tool bar and a bunch of other stuff installed on my laptop. Also this program changed my homepage. I ran AVG and several spyware removers but couldn't get rid of all the programs. I saw a suggestion to use Malwarebytes’ in another post and I tried that last night. The Malwarebytes” program seems to have removed the virus, as AVG is no longer picking it up. If you could check the logs and let me know if it is gone I would greatly appreciate it. Thank you for your help as I am not that computer savvy and I have been going crazy trying to remove this virus.

I don't see anything nasty in the log, but i's like you to run the following, just as a second opinion - I figure that it won't anything that interesting and a quick tidy and you'll be done:

Go here and click the Kaspersky Online Scanner button - I.E. is required for this scan.
  • Read the Requirements and limitations before you click Accept.
  • Allow the ActiveX download if necessary.
  • Once the database has downloaded click Next.
  • Click Scan Settings and check the "Scan using the following antivirus database" is set to extended, not standard, and then click OK.
  • Click on "My Computer" and then put the kettle on!
  • When the scan has completed, click Save Report As...
  • Enter a name for the file in the Filename: text box and then click the down arrow to the right of Save as type: and select text file (*.txt)
  • Click Save - by default the file will be saved to your Desktop, but you can change this if you wish.
Copy and paste the report into your next reply along with a fresh HJT log, run in Normal Mode, and a description of how your PC is behaving.

Note for Internet Explorer 7 users: If at any time you have trouble with the accept button of the licence, click on the Zoom tool located at the right bottom of the IE window and set the zoom to 75 %. Once the license accepted, reset to 100%.
Death to the salad eaters!

My computer is still running slower than usual. Kaspersky showed that there were still 12 viruses and 40 affected files. Again, thank you for all of your help.

The detections relate to files in C:\Documents and Settings\Larry Spencer\My Documents\Debbie's Stuff\New Stuff To Keep\Programs and C:\Documents and Settings\Larry Spencer\My Documents\Debbie's Stuff\Old Stuff to Move to CD\Disc 6\Programs as of 02-22-08. I doubt that any of these pose a real and immediate threat to your PC.
They all seem to be monitoring programs of some description, ActivityMonitor and Wiretappro being two I can identify. These get flagged by anti-virus programs as they have a potential to be used maliciously rather than their presence being an indicator of malicious intent. I guess you'll need to speak to "Debbie" about them as they are "her" stuff.

Without any detections to indicate the existance of malware, it's possible that the PC just need a spring clean - the following steps will serve this purpose.. Not all of them will be of benefit to your PC as this is a general post, but the overall effect should be positive.

1) Go to Start > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs and remove any programs that you no longer use and then reboot your PC.

2) Download ATF Cleaner by Atribune from here and save it to your Desktop.
Double click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Check the boxes to the left of:
Windows Temp
Current User Temp
All Users Temp
Temporary Internet Files
Java Cache

The rest are optional - if you want to remove the lot, check "Select All".
Finally click Empty Selected. When you get the "Done Cleaning" message, click OK.

If you use the Firefox or Opera browsers, you can use this program as a quick way to tidy those up as well.

When you have finished, click on the Exit button in the Main menu.

For Technical Support, double-click the e-mail address located at the bottom of each menu.

Please Note: This program is for Windows XP and Windows 2000 only.

3) Double click My Computer.
Right click the disc drive you wish to check.
Click Properties.
In the Properties dialog box, click the Tools Tab.
Under Error-checking, click the Check Now button.
In the "Check Disc Local Disk (C:)" dialog box, check both Automatically fix file system errors and Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors, and then click Start.

This will look for and attempt to repair any errors that your hard drive has.

4) Defragment your hard drive. A tutorial for disc defragmentation is available here.

5) Download and run StartUp Inspector.
This program will help you to decide exactly what programs you disable from running at startup.
The Readme.txt file included has instructions on how to use it.

Once you've completed them all, reboot the PC and give it a test drive and tell me how things are behaving.
Death to the salad eaters!
