I've noticed that within the past 48 hours, I will periodically receive a SPAM Instant message via my MSN screen name account, to which I sign on to via Trillian. That comes after having issues with VLC Media Player crashing for no apparent reason and also having problems with iTunes freezing when attempting to exit the iTunes Player forcing me to have to force it to close by either stopping the process itself or waiting for Windows to ask me to close it after Windows says the program is not responding.

I initially have tried running Adaware Personal, Spybot: S&D, McAfee, and CCleaner. Adaware Personal will not update the definitions like it normally does when I run the program, so I have to physically download the updated definitions file from the website and replace it the old definitions file with the new one.

After I ran McAffee, it found a Trojan located in my local C:\ "System Volume Information" under what looks to be a System Restore point file. So, I disabled System Restore, restarted the computer and ran McAfee Avert Stinger to attempt to remove it if it indeed was embedded in the System Restore. The search came back negative and the standard McAfee virus scanner software returned an error trying to remove or clean the file:
"C:\System Volume Information\_restore{81955C46-8EFE-46B9-8ED5-39CBF33123F7}\RP817\A0101937.exe Generic.dx (Trojan)"

So, I ran HijackThis to see if I could run it by you guys. Maybe I'm missing something. Any ideas?

It's ok. I was beginning to wonder, though lol.

Ok, I restarted my computer then I ran HijackThis scan again. The following is a copy of the latest logfile:

Nothing much has changed since I initially posted. I have not, however received any more spam messages through my MSN accoun (via Trillian), but that's probably because I stopped signing into that particular account that was receiving the spam messages. Certain programs like iTunes still continue to freeze and crash at times, particularly when I try to exit the program. VLC Media Player tends to crash for no apparent reason. Since yesterday, I noticed that it was taking longer than usual for Windows to startup. I had already made sure I disabled any unnecessary programs in Startup in "msconfig."

The only two programs I have installed recently are "Bitcollider" and the "Weather Channel Desktop." The former of the two is the only one setup to run at startup, however I don't believe that would be causing the problem.

I regularly run Windows Update to make sure I have the latest security updates at the very least for Windows OS as well as updated definitions for "Windows Defender." Since these problems started, I have been running the same Virus and Spyware scanners daily, though nothing much is really ever found. Lavasoft Ad-Aware SE Personal still returns an error whenever it tries to update the definitions. I have had to resort to physically downloading the definitions file from their website and replacing the outdated one with the new one.

That's the gist of what's going on. Right now, it's more of an annoyance than anything alarming right now. I just want to kick this in the bud before it potentially develops into a more serious problem. If all else fails, I'll just re-format and be done with it, but for now I'd like to find out if you notice anything suspicion in the HijackThis logfile and would appreciate any advice you may be able to offer.

Thanks again for your time!

PS: As a supplement, I attached an image of the processes that are currently running. Periodically I go through and do a search on each process to make sure none of them are viruses/spyware. Typically, I don't find anything.

Close all programs leaving only HijackThis running. Place a check against each of the following, :

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {7E853D72-626A-48EC-A868-BA8D5E23E045} - (no file)
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Dilberttest3 web link] "C:\Program Files\Dilberttest3\Screen Saver\FWLink.exe"

Click on Fix Checked when finished and exit HijackThis.

Using Windows Explorer, locate the following files/folders, and delete them:

C:\Program Files\Dilberttest3

Exit Explorer, and reboot as normal afterwards.

Reboot and rescan with HiJackThis and post a new log here.
Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.

I apologize for the delay in my response. I'm in the midst of moving....

My computer has been behaving badly now. At random my computer will freeze and then hang-up. I noticed when I re-boot, McAfee is disabled when I never have disabled it. Also, McAfee returned a process error right before I re-booted. When I went to:

Start
Turn off Computer

I clicked on "Restart" and the menu disappeared as normal, but the computer never restarted. I tried clicking on "Shut-down" instead, but the computer would not actually shut-down. I was forced to do a hard boot.

As per your instructions, I checked those two items in the HijackThis program, and deleted the file:

C:\Program Files\Dilberttest3

After hard boot, I re-ran HijackThis and the following is the logfile:

Download ComboFix from Here or Here to your Desktop.

In the event you already have Combofix, this is a new version that I need you to download.
It must be saved directly to your desktop.

1. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

  • Temporarily disable your anti-virus, script blocking and any anti-malware real-time protection before performing a scan.
  • Click on this link to see a list of programs that should be disabled. The list is not all inclusive. If yours is not listed and you don't know how to disable it, please ask.
  • Remember to re enable the protection again afterwards before connecting to the net

2. Close any open browsers and make sure you are disconnected from the net. Unplug the cable if need be before running combofix.
  • IF you have not already done so Combofix will disconnect your machine from the Internet when it starts.
  • If there is no internet connection when Combofix has completely finished then restart your computer to restore back the connections.

3. Now double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
When finished, it will produce a report for you.
Please post the "C:\ComboFix.txt" along with a new HijackThis log for further review

Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall or freeze.

Sorry I didn't get a email when you posted or I just missed it. :smack: Log looks fine. Reset your restore points, that is where the only thing macafee found. Note that you will need to log into your computer with an account which has full administrator access. You will know if the account has administrator access because you will be able to see the System Restore tab. If the tab is missing, you are logged in under a limited account. 1. Turn off System Restore. On the Desktop, right-click My Computer. Click Properties. Click the System Restore tab. Check Turn off System Restore. Click Apply, and then click OK. 2. Reboot. 3. Turn ON System Restore. On the Desktop, right-click My Computer. Click Properties. Click the System Restore tab. UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*. Click Apply, and then click OK. Then let me know how it is running.
