I've tried Superantispyware and have McAfee. McAfee can't clean, quarantine or delete the file, it asks to check if it is write-(something). It's in file C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\gesBssqpn or something close. Here is the logfile. Thanks

This includes installing the Windows XP Recovery Console in case you have not installed it yet.

For more information on the Windows XP Recovery Console read http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314058.

Once you install the Recovery Console, when you reboot your computer, you'll see the option for the Recovery Console now as well. Don't select Recovery Console as we don't need it. By default, your main OS is selected there. The screen stays for 2 seconds and then it proceeds to load Windows. That is normal.

Post the log from ComboFix when you've accomplished that, along with a new HijackThis log.

Thank you very much, it appears to have taken care of it for the most part. However, my computer shut itself off before I received a log from ComboFix, but here is my new Hijackthis log. Do you want me to run ComboFix again? Should I run it the same way?

Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.

• Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
• If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
• Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Full Scan", then click Scan. Check all the boxes and click Start Scan
• The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
• When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
• Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
• When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.(See Extra Note)
• The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
• Copy&Paste the entire report in your next reply.

Extra Note:
If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove,you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts,click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process,if asked to restart the computer,please do so immediatly.

Hi sorry it took so long to get back to you. My computer shut down twice during the Malwarebytes scan 3 hours in and it finally went through on the 3rd try. (6 hours) My computer is running pretty well as far as I can tell. It seems to boot up a little quicker than it used to. Active Desktop is still blank and during all the scans I've continued to get popups from McAfee saying a virus has been found and cleaned, deleted, etc. I really appreciate all your help. Follow these steps to uninstall Combofix and tools used in the removal of malware

• Click START then RUN
• Now type Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK. Note the space between the X and the U, it needs to be there.
  

You now need to update your Java and remove your older versions.

Make Internet Explorer more secure

• Click Start > Run
• Type Inetcpl.cpl & click OK
• Click on the Security tab
• Click Reset all zones to default level
• Make sure the Internet Zone is selected & Click Custom level
• In the ActiveX section, set the first two options ("Download signed and unsigned ActiveX controls) to "Prompt", and ("Initialize and Script ActiveX controls not marked as safe") to "Disable".
• Next Click OK, then Apply button and then OK to exit the Internet Properties page.

* MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well known ad sites and other bad sites. Basically, this prevents your computer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer, meaning it will be difficult to infect yourself in the future.

* Please consider using an alternate browser. Mozilla's Firefox browser is fantastic; it is much more
secure than Internet Explorer, immune to almost all known browser hijackers, and also has the best built-in pop up

The computer is running a little slow still, however I have yet to see any sign of malware. Do pictures really take up a lot of space? Is it best to keep them on a CD or some other memory device? I appreciate the tips on such things as Mozilla. Are there any other general tidbits to keep a computer quick? (it's a Dell Inspiron 5100 a few years old) Thanks so much

Pictures shouldn't take up that much space. Keeping them on a CD could be a good idea
